Has anyone ever gotten static through a zoltrix card? I use a DA-20mkll
throught a 9ft coax into the pc. I've got horrible static from 48k dats and
a little now and then from 44. I use samplitude to record waves, since i
heard of it's nice 48>44 transfers. though when i resample i get the same
bad news (plus it plays at chipmunk speed).
could it have to do with an incompatibility between zoltrix drivers and
windows xp? I can't think of anything else, anyone have an idea?
Thanks!

perhaps you could start by controlling the sound
within the room: position the subwoofer differently,
use bass traps in the corners (that'd be a big help
probably), put some blanket or absorber material on
the wall and ceiling...think of the sound as waves,
low frequency sounds being longer waves of course, and
you just want to prevent them from bouncing and
building up and leaking. tame that beast. random
objects do wonders to absorb sound- furniture,
couches, even plants. if there's windows in there,
those leak a lot, and the glass also creates nasty
reflections within your room. you'd probably want to
put blankets over them. just experiment...and pick up
a book on acoustics. i used to have a good one but a
friend borrowed it and i don't have it back yet. i
believe it was written by chares salter. if all else
fails, go for the big bucks and hire an acoustical
consultant. i know salter does consultation...don't
know what area you live in...if you're in the SoCal
area i know some people who could possibly be of help.
anyways, good luck.

> code.
No. You can try, but as you don't know how many there are you will
always run out of synch. So, sooner or later you will miss something
or see something double. How often this happens will depend on the
ratio of the crystals' speeds in the playback and the recoding devices.
There was a very good explanation posted here a few months ago and I
recommend reading it before going on with this discussion. Anybody got
the url handy? you should also try to *understand* my post; i don't
think you did and I take full blame for not being clear enough..
>The samples are digital, not analog; you can't listen to them at your
>own speed.
Um? I meant by 'listen' the process of reading signals from a bus. I
*have* to do that at my clock if I don't follow/watch the embedded time
code. This kind of 'resampling' happens in the time domain but it
also produces noise. Very very low though and only interesting really
in the realm of multi-generational digital cloning/trading. Which the
makers of all consumer cards care as little for as those of field
recorders named jukebox.. ;-) But that's where my post came from..
>Locking in to follow a clock to get all the bits is one thing;
No. It is the only thing and the only (reliable) way.
>> Just look at all the soho sound cards! Do you think it had really been
>Are those the ones that only allow one input speed, so they _have to_
Um. Soho means consumer market and these are eg. *all* creative cards,
all terratec sound systems cards ( as opposed to their audio systems
line of cards) all mainboards and all cheap no-names.
You can tell by their drivers not having a button to switch
between internal and external clock.

I have a buddy who has 2 Portadats he is willing to
sell. One with time code, one without. Both are in
nearly new condition. He has either 2 batteries or 4,
he has to check and see. Any suggestions for a fair
price I should offer him. Not sure yet whether I will
try to buy them both or just one. I know these are
wonderful machines, I just don't know what to offer.
Thanks in advance, Michael

What firmware were you using when you had problems with pops and clicks?
Did you upgrade your Nomad first thing when you opened the package, or did
you just use the firmware that came with it?

I recently sold off my old gear and was planning on recording with a
laptop
but I decided to save some $ and went with the NomadJB3 instead. My
current
rig
is Oktava MC-012> UA-5> NJB3. I've used the rig twice in the field and had
mixed results. A couple sets turned out fine while others were littered
with
clicks and
pops. I just upgraded the firmware and have done some testing at home, so
far so
good.

Yes, most consumer devices with digital input resample incoming digital
audio. This has been a sad fact of life for audio geeks for a long time.
In fact, all soundcards made by Creative Labs to date suffer from this
problem. When I first read about the Nomad 3's optical input, I immediately
dismissed it as a suitible recording device because it was made by Creative,
and I'm well aware of their piss poor track record in producing bit accurate
products. However, the extensive testing done by Jamie Lutch found the
Nomad 3 hardware to yeild bit-accurate results, although the a firmware bug
caused occasional dropouts on the order of 10-50 samples at a time. Recent
firmware updates has reduced the number of dropouts both in frequency and in
the number of drops at a time. I'm still not comfortable saying the Nomad 3
is field ready, but this most recent firmware is pretty darn close... but
that's another story... let's get back to your inability to understand the
technology at hand.
> Mike, so you can input a track from a CD and compare the track loaded
> to a PC to an (eg) EACed version? Same number and values of samples?
> Sounds great, unlikely imo, but great; anybody actually been there?
Yes, I've been there, as have many others. However, who would use an extra
(totally unnecessary) DAE step in any critical digital signal tests not
specifically involving DAE?!? For my tests involving the bit accuracy of the
Nomad 3, I run the following setup:
optical > nomad 3
/
Fostex D5-|
\
coax > USBPre or TB Fiji
Since the D5 has both a coax and optical out, i can run two different
parallel sources. I've independantly confirmed the bit accuracy of my
USBPre and Turtle Beach Fiji. I take the resulting recorded wav file of the
Nomad 3 and edit the starting point to match that of the USBPre/Fiji source.
Then use the 'compare wave' function in EAC (or just invert the wav files
over each other in a program like Sound Forge). In all my tests of the new
firmware, both sources are bit-for-bit identical. I can substitute my
Turtle Beach Fiji card with the USBPre in these tests, and again,
bit-identical results. If they are not bit accurate, how is this possible?

> 're-sample' the signal. This is nothing else but 'listening' to the

> ticking with the same speed..! (All the children sing: "no two crystals
> are alike under the heavens..")
Well, based on my tests above *using your theory*, either my Nomad 3, USBPre
and Turtle Beach Fiji have the same exact crystal speed, or they *are* in
fact reading the timecode from the DAT deck.
Sorry to burst your bubble.... Timecode has absolutely nothing to do with
bit accuracy in a SP/DIF audio stream... it has everything to do with the
ability of the recording device to accurately take the incoming data and
print them to media (DAT, harddisk, CD-R) without resampling.

Date: Sat, 04 Jan 2003 10:12:20 -0500
Happy New Year,
First off sorry for the cross post. I just want everyone to see this in
hope that it'll capture that extra bit of data. My apologies to those that
are seeing a repeat of a post I placed to a couple of lists at the end of
October.
I have been working fairly steadily for several months to collect and
catalog all of John Hartford's performances. Therefore, I am in search of
any John Hartford public and private show dates, stage
times, venues, guest appearances, etc. in any form. For example: tapes,
ticket stubs, personal recollections, festival schedules, tour schedules,
posters, fan club mailings, set lists, etc.
I am also looking for recordings (DAT, CD, Cassette, VHS) so that I can
glom set list info and also include circulated recording info into the
project.
With the hosting help of Rob Scott, I have put together a very rudimentary
web form so that folks can just enter in information about John
sightings. At some point I hope to have a bare bones beta page up so that
folks can look at what is already cataloged before sending along more info.
That form is here~~> http://web.mit.edu/rscott/www/hartford.html
ANY help is appreciated! Please contact me off list with additional info.
THANKS! ...Kk

I'm not sure about using D cells, but I use this cool solution with my M1
and it's worked out very well.
http://www.pwrplant.com/cd.html
It's designed to power portable CD players. It's rechargeable and has a low
profile and best of all it's cheap! I've had mine for about a year (was
recommended to me on this list). I've been able to power my M1 for five
hours recording, turning the light on, giving an optical patch, and
listening to headphones with the volume cranked and still had three bars on
the power display when finished.
The site says it's $18 through Dec 24th, but it looks like they have not
changed the price back to $29 yet. The only drawback is there's no smart
charging so you have to make sure you don't over-charge it.

perusal of the input by everyone else.
I'm unsubscribing, but would like to thank *all* of the DAT Heads for the

Subject: Q on copying DVD to CDR
Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 16:17:00 EST
Hi everyone,
I have some "official-release" DVDs that I bought from amazon and I'd like to
copy them to CDR for my personal use. I have the Sony CD-RW33 pro CD
recorder, and I play my DVDs out of a Daewoo DVD player that is multiregion
with macrovision in the "off" position.
In a nutshell, can I hook up my CD recorder to my DVD player through optical
cables and would I be able to make a copy from DVD to CDR in this fashion? Or
is it more complicated than that? What about copying from DVD to a Sony R500
dat machine? It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can help me with this,
also maybe there are others here also interested in making personal copies as
well of their own DVDs. Hearing Star Wars on CD would be rather cool.
Thanks in advance
