I've been using an ADC-20 since about '98. I've never been a big fan of
the BNC connector. When working normally, there is movement; it is not
a 'firm' connection, like RCA. Even with this "play" you should never
lose the signal. It must have been
knocked and the internal connection is now loose. If you're not
comfortable soldering it yourself, it needs to go into the shop.
> How are other ADC-20 owners dealing with the BNC connector?
I deal with it as little as possible, as in, only for patchers. I like
to have
patchers, as this is a back up to your recording, if your deck goes
down.
> I've been considering going from the AES out of the back which seems
> more solid.
Good move. I built an XLR to RCA cable soon after I started using the
ADC-20.
I like that it's more robust, and by having all the connections out of
the back
of the unit, your gear bag is more tidy. I've never had any problems
feeding
the AES/EBU 110 ohm signal into a S/PDIF 75 ohm digi input. If you're
anal about
the resistance, there are cable manufacturers (Audio Magic is one) that
sell AES/EBU XLR to S/PDIF RCA resistance converting cables.
Hope this helps.

As a former owner of one of these, I would like to point out the only weak
point of this deck - the output level of the headphones is too low for loud
concert work. A mod for this was published in a recent MIX magazine - Eddie
Ciletti and Dennis of NXT collaborated on a simple mod to boost the output
6dB. So... if you send your HHb in to Dennis at NXT, make sure to request
the mod - it is a worthwhile improvement. I performed the mod to my deck
myself and was very pleased with the improvement in output level - I use
Sony 7506 cans (same as the MDR V6's really). No component designators are
on the HHb circuit board, nor are component locations described in the MIX
article. I did talk with eddie and he indicated at the time that he would be
putting the mod info on his website to be downloadable for a fee. I can see
about scanning the single page schematic I have saved from my deck's surgery
for those who might be interested.

That's the great October 29, 1970 BBC broadcast aired in Dec. 1970. It
was made into a nice vinyl boot in 1971. The full 80 min with some
unbroadcast Joni Mitchell songs recently surfaced. Anyone have

Has anyone tried the Mbox yet for live recording? I'm wondering (1) if the
Focusrite mic preamps are comparable to other preamps used by DAT Heads
for live recording, and (2) are the line inputs adequate for a hot board
feed. Seems like a neat little package if you're already using Pro Tools
and need something portable and USB-compatible, but the lower cost makes
me think it may not be up to the task of recording music from loud
sources.

If you run a DA-P1, definitely utilize the AES port. I looked long and hard
for such a cable (digital female XLR>male RCA) until I contacted Frank at
http://www.cascademedia.net/ and he had one custom made for me (I think he
ordered it from Pro-Digital). I use this cable all the time now with never a
problem. But it looks like your a Sony guy so maybe contact Pro-Digital and
request an AES>7-pin? I think the single cable "in" type of the 7-pin is
only about $65.00. Patchers could just come out of the BNC port of your
ADC-20.

Hey Folks...I've been trying to sort out a problem I've been having
with drop-outs. I thought my coax>7 pin cable was bad so I just got
a new one. Now I find it is actually the BNC>coax connection on the ADC-20
which
has quite a bit of play.
How are other ADC-20 owners dealing with the BNC connector?
I've been considering going from the AES out of the back which seems
more solid.
