From: greg weston <gregweston@frenzmail.net> Subject: LA venue security Reply-To: gregweston@frenzmail.net Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 02:05:07 -0800 (PST) Hey all, I'm going to a couple of concerts in Feb and even though the artist doesn't personally mind taping, his record company is against it. So this means sneaking some gear inside the HOB in Anaheim and the Wiltern in LA. What kind of security can I expect going inside these places? Metal detectors? Wands? Serious patdowns? Any and all help would be appreciated. And keep the morality email regarding stealthing shows to yourselves ;) Thanks, Greg my DAT list can be found at this crappy page: http://greg-weston.tripod.com/DATlist.html also some recent concert photos can be found at: http://www.imagestation.com/members/greg_weston _____________________________________________________________ Select your own custom email address for FREE! From: "DCA" <phisher72@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: battery Reply-To: "DCA" <phisher72@earthlink.net> Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 07:15:54 -0500 Since I am an electronics designer, I can attempt to answer this. The Energizer battery would probably work, BUT it will not last as long as the RCA battery. The mAh represents the amount of current supplied relative to time (as many probably know). For example the 4500 mAh could supply 900 mA for 5 hours. 4500/5 = 900 That is just an example! That is assuming your DVD player consumes 900mA of current, it could be more or less. That was for example only. You get the idea. As far as the voltage, the 0.2 V difference _should_ not make a difference. There is what is called a "dropout" voltage threshold. This is the point at which the device hits how much differential voltage it needs to see above the actual voltage it is running on interally (regulated) before it shuts down. So, if it works, you won't damage the unit - it has its own shutdown circuits that will turn it off before it would wig out on insufficient voltage. But, it will be more likely to hit the dropout voltage faster than the higher voltage battery. As the battery runs out of charge, the volts will begin to drop as well. I would suggest looking at battery wharehouses, and/or on eBay for a better substitute. You don't want to buy a new battery, just to find out it doesn't last very long. They may not be returnable. You should get one that is the same mAh or more. BTW, NiMH is the more or less the best rechargeable battery technology available today. I know that each technology needs separate rechargers, and some Li Ion batteries are not rechargeable I think. I only use NiMH - it is also one of the more environmentally friendly ones (if there is such a thing). Dave >So my question has gone unanswered in several >>other forums. From: David Nolan <LiveAir995@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: B.B. King's Blues Club, New York City security? Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 10:14:07 -0500 I work at BB's from time to time - the venue allows taping - after that, it's up to the band. I HAVE seen certain bands make tapers take their stands down after the venue let them set up...it's a little bit of a crap shoot - some groups I would have thought allowed taping did not. Anyway, no detectors or searches that I've ever seen... If it's a taper-friendly band, there is usually a section on the floor or sometimes dead center along the rail. dave n on 1/16/03 11:50 PM, Digestifier at DAT-heads-Request@datheads.phish.net wrote: > From: f bion <fbion@caramail.com> > Subject: B.B. From: Klay Anderson <klay@klay.com> Subject: BNC Connectors Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 08:50:29 -0700 Rich Perlman <richard@montclairelectronics.com> Subject: Graham-Patten ADC-20 owners > I've never been a big fan of the BNC connector. When working normally, there > is movement; it is not a 'firm' connection, like RCA. Ruling out mechanical damage, there is no better unbalanced connector of this size for high frequency use. Note the derivatives are used extensively in everything from microwave ovens to cell phones to the Airport card in your Mac. Developed originally most think for the British Navy by Neill and Concelmann. They developed a series of connectors, at least some of which were: N - "Neill" connector C - "Concelmann" connector BNC - "Bayonet Neill-Concelmann" connector TNC - "Threaded Neill-Concelmann" connector The slight looseness of the connector is normal. As it was designed to connect very high (radar) frequencies, it is necessary to allow for self-centering to maintain a constant impedance so that the SWR will not vary and cause reflections at the connector. Additionally, there is tension on the outer twist-lock so the dielectric can be constant despite cable movement. This is because at these frequencies, the cable becomes a transmission line. It is very difficult to maintain high frequency considerations when dealing with a toy connector such as an RCA plug for this purpose. Properly made by a reputable manufacturer, the BNC is also very robust averaging well over 160,000 repeated connects/disconnects for a typical model. Try that with your RCA. > I've never had any problems feeding the AES/EBU 110 ohm signal into a S/PDIF > 75 ohm digi input. You probably won't hear it but you can measure it, but it is insignificant for this application. The Graham Patten folks *know what they are doing* as is shown by their correct implementation of AES-3 in their gear. Do not apply "home stereo" rules to very high frequency applications or you can seriously compromise the end product. > If you're anal about the resistance, there are cable manufacturers (Audio > Magic is one) that sell AES/EBU XLR to S/PDIF RCA resistance converting > cables. It is not resistance and a simply made cable by whatever Gucci-brand overpriced cable-monger will not transform impedance. Properly wired "adaptor cables" can certainly be used to change one connector type to another, but a transformer (or in this case, a pulse transformer) is the only correct way to passively change impedance. From: "MattB" <matt@mattb.net> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #610 Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 08:51:06 -0700 I have a set of these mics and I'm generally very happy with them. They came with Omni, Cardioid, and Hyper Card caps. I haven't used the omnis mostly because I prefer some directional ability. I hear the omni caps sound the best, but maybe someone else can verify that. I usually use the cardioid caps and I think they sound very nice. I have a MMW show (4-13-02) that I think is my best example of what can be done with them. Get in touch if you want to check it out. I've used the hypers at a Galactic show last summer and found them to sound a lot thinner than the cardioids. It could have been the venue/setup (Rico Theater, in Co - NOS by the board) but I've stuck with the cards since. For FOB I don't think you can beat them for the money. From: Jared Williams <frambuesajam@yahoo.com> Subject: ISO: Gillian Welch Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 10:10:24 -0800 (PST) I know it's a long shot but... I'm looking for this for a family member - The name of the song is "Tear My Stillhouse Down" by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. They performed the version I want on Austin City Limits, 22nd Season, October 22, 1996. Gillian Welch did a version of the son on her Revival album but she did that one without David Rawlings and it is his guitar work that I like best about the song. I notice the two have been on a lot of tours together. I would be surprised if they did not perform this number at the concerts. Perhaps there is a recording out there of it from a concert? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've been trading and taping for many years. If you have a lead on this I'll send you my list. thanks - Jared __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. From: Scott Goodwin <coryphaena_29403@juno.com> Subject: Oktava 012s Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 07:49:50 -0500 Yo, Des - A friend of mine and I got a pair of these about six months ago, and we love them. We've been using them both with and without an external A>D and with a Midiman Audio Buddy Preamp, with really excellent results. We only have the cardioid capsules, and may also consider getting some hypers sometime soon, but for now are very happy with these very cheap mics. Worst case, there's a bustling used market on eBay, so buying a pair, trying them for a while, and then getting rid of them if you don't like them would be a rather inexpensive proposition... What battery-powered mic preamp devices are there available? Also, are they a must-have vs. the standard built-in pre-amp I have been using, or just a slight upgrade? Also, who makes / sells the mic mounts that are adjustable for aiming? The ones I have only parallel to each other (0 degrees). Thanks, Dave
From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: ISO 4/17-19/87 SBD>MC or SBD>PCM>DAT Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 15:54:44 -0800 I realize tis might be a hell of a reach, but if there is anyway anyone has the original Casette Master's, I'd like to retransfer the show, s the lineage would be SBD>MC>WAV>CDA or SHN. I have what I'm pretty impressed with as a Cassette Deck, a Denn 700, 3 head, 3 motor and a ART DI/O A/D converter. I'd like to remaster the run directly from the master casette's, hopefully, or from the DAT's if I can't locate the Cassette's, which I have very little hope of locating. I would like to remaster the shows so the lineage for the run would be SBD>MC>WAV>SHN or CDA. As I don't think there is much chance of getting the original MC's, I'd like to make the SHN copies so there would be no EAC in te lineage. Keith -- If you love animals, check out www.wotwild.com. They'll be opening in Houston (1-28), Austin (1-29), and Dallas (1-31). Both bands have the same manager, which is how Coldplay heard MossEisley's music and decided to have them open. There are mp3s on the band's site http://www.mosseisley.com/ , and their live show is supposed to be even better.
