From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Re: are plextors old news? Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 23:08:28 -0800 I believe I stumbled upon the same test of CD-ROM's Slipkid referred to, and have a fair amoount of experience using a Plextor Ultraplex 40 Max. If it wasn't the same test, it was something similar. The 2 Plextor's the UW and the 50 pin, blew eveything away. I bought the first one I own, because of tests, and anecdotal information that matches the test results Slipkid posted. When I got the first one I have, I used it to extract music from CD's to burn on a Plextor 8x20 SCSI. Although the speeds I obtained using Secure Mode were 2 to 3X as fast as the Toshiba I removed to put the Plextor in, they weren't as high as the speeds others talked about. I had put the drive in a computer with an AMD K6-2 450, and I believe a Via chipset on an Asus P5A board. I called Plextor tech support, and was told, fairly quickly, that the Ultrplex's don't work nearly as well with a MB with a Via Chipset, as the do with a MB with an Intel Chipset. A few months later I built a P3-700 computer and put the SCSI card, burner, and Ultraplex all in there. My DAE speed increased dramaticly. I still use that P3 when I d audio work becus I am kind f broke and dont have $500 or so to buy a P-4,and a Board with a gig of DDR memory As I'd like to have. I have heard the newer Athlon XP boards extract as fast and as accurately, as the boards with Intel Chipsets now. From my perspective, last year when Plextor stopped making SCSI CD-RW's, I was apprehensive, especially after reading test like Slipkid poted, that the SCSI ultraplex's, would be next to go, and I bought 6 band new ones on eBay auctions. The performace of my first ne was so spectacular, I didn't want to risk not having one, or being able to get my hands on a new one. I sold a couple recently, since I saw Plextor is joining the burning speed race with a 40x or so CD-RW, I felt reassured te prductin of the ultraplex's will continue. From: "MarkS Barnett" <msbmsbmsb@hotmail.com> Subject: scalpstealthsellboots??? Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 16:07:56 +0000 To me this issue is clear. If you are wondering as some seem to why the general consensus is that we oppose scalping (which is legal in some places) endorse stealthing (which may be illegal in some places) and are dead against the selling of our live recordings (whether or not it is legal), it is simple. The thing we are for and are here for is access to music. That's why DAT's are so great. Thats why they tried to control us with scms. The show runs about >52 minutes. Does anyone have a clue as to the >venue, city, or exact date? Lemmie know! Hiya Mitchell, Oooh, this is one of my all-time favorite shows ever! Your venue & date questions have already been answered, but let me add a bit more... The full show was actually longer than 52 minutes. There was an additional 20+ minute warmup/soundcheck that was not part of the original broadcast as syndicated in the US. The soundcheck has one repeated song (Carey, w/story) but everything else was different. I have the full show, and lots of other people on this list do, too. Seems to be pretty common, I know I got heaps of responses when I originally requested it myself years ago (http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/digests/V3.200/D208#Msg0 ). I ended up receiving an excellent LP>Dat copy from a very kind soul who had an original BBC vinyl disc (used for broadcasting) in his collection, I'd be happy to spin you a copy for blanks & postage if you like. Just remove the 'nospam' in my email addy. Here's the full setlist & info: Original BBC Broadcast disc, BBC Transcription Service, Recording #CN 1485/S Joni Mitchell & James Taylor, 10/29/70 Royal Festival Hall, London Joni Mitchell 1. Klay is quite correct about the usage of BNC connectors. High Frequency test equipment almost exclusively uses BNC connectors. Where I work we write calibration procedures for this test equipment. The connectors are tested using a gauge to make sure there is no problem with the connectors. An example of one of these gauges is on this page http://www.pmk.com/news18.htm. Your connector may be worn or damaged. Chuck Quinn
