Neal -- I was there for the Hank Williams Tribute (early show w. Hank III
and Jr.) on 1-04-03. I stealthed with a Sharp MD-SR60 and Sound Pro bi's.
The mics were fixed on my glasses, with the cable coming out of the back of
my shirt. I sat on stage left, next to the large speakers. The mics and
cable were obvious and I made no attempt to hide them. I had a small
flashlight and checked sound levels throughout the performance. I never
flaunted the equipment, though. It did not appear to me that Security was
concerned. They took no precautions at the door, such as wanding or
frisking.
Note: I would suggest getting tickets for the center balcony, first row. My
seat was horrible for taping although great for seeing the show. You might
be able to get an excellent recording from there, especially if you could
dangle the mics over the balcony. I did not see any security in the balcony
or any traffic along the first row balcony. The night we were there it was a
piece of cake to tape.

that it might be tougher to get gear in then other places but was

For my needs, an 80 minute high quality Audio CD-R burned on a 12x10x32
Plextor is fast enought to keep me happy. Even the 8 minutes or s it
takes an 8x20 SCSI has kept me happy for years. Wwithin arms reack f
where I am sitting are 2 computers with 2 Ultraplex 40 Max drives, an
8x20 SCSI and a 12x10x32 SCSI. I have no doubt in my mind that 8x20 has
burned 3,000 cd's easily. The 12x10x32 sitting here was a Plextor
Refurbished unit I picked up for about $110. I have another like it, I
haven't even opened the box yet. And a 3rd I bought brand new, in a
computer I rarely use. Last summer ssomeone was selling some of the
Imation badged 8x20 Plextor CD-R's. He claimed they were new, and
looked it, but I think they were refurbished. The original Imation
badged Plextr 8x20's, you could run the upgraded firmware, and the
computer would recognize them as Plextor's. The Plextor Firmware won't
run on these. I bought a bunch of them maybe I'll be burning CD-R when
it's a completely obsolete format. At least I'll be burning on drives
as reliable as anvils. I hope my PCM R-500 lasts.

Howdy friends,
Like some of you, I recorded the Stones HBO broadcast this Saturday. I'm
curious how others got their digital copies, as there will be many, many of
these circulating immediately, and some might be CATV->VHS tape->CDr, for
instance, or sampled on low-end computer soundcards. My DAT is a 48 kHz
recording from the analog cable box, via analog RCA cables from my amplifier.
Thus, the first time it entered the digital domain was when I recorded it to
DAT, although there is no analog tape generation like a copy of a VHS tape of
the broadcast.
I'm curious if anybody was able to do a straight (and not resampled) clone of
a digital broadcast. A couple Stones fans wrote me and said that their
attempts to do so were met with a "copy prohibit" message, and they had to
record through the analog outputs like I did (although some people recorded
analog out from a digital cable set-up). One guy said that he believed the
HBO analog broadcasts were compressed compared to the digital ones, but said
he hasn't done A/B comparisons to check for sure. When I asked my cable
company last year about getting a digital cable box with a digital output for
straight un-resampled clones to DAT, the cable guy told me that you can't do
it with the system they offer.
So, long story short, although this DAT copy is clean and complete (with the
pre-show nonsense and interminable audience clapping conclusion also), I
don't want to do a CDr transfer and spread it to my trading buddies if there
are theoretically superior bit-for-bit clones that never left the digital
environment from broadcast to CDr. Thanks for any responses to this question!
Pax,
Sean

No need to actually buy the sony part.
You can go to radio shack and buy a 4 AA cell cartridge. It is the
same. What you need to do to make it work is simply flatten the 9v
barrel connector (the large, positive side) with a pair of pliers. Now,
it will fit inside the bay of a D7/8. I believe the positive terminal
goes in back. You can just flip it around until you find which side is
correct. It fits very snugly (and has great contact) so you'll need to
carry those pliers w/you to remove it when you need to. I find a pair
of small needle nose pliers does the job, and is a good thing to have in
the gear bag any way.

Open taping the night I was there, so I can't help you much on that front,
but the Ryman is an amazing venue in terms of sound, one of the best I've
ever been to (and I've been to a few). Sweetest of the sweet spots is the
front of the balcony (I'm usually a floor guy). Balcony hangs low and comes
out far...sound is pristine. Make good tapes.

Hi folks,
I successfully used my setup a few times, but am having problems now.
Sony D7
CoreSound Binaural mics with bass roll-off filter
I was using fresh batteries of the E2 type that are supposed to last 3
times as long and the price reflects it. I haven't gotten rechargables
yet.
Problem is that even at high mic sensitivity and the recording level
cranked all the way to 10, the system shows no recording level on the
display and if I tap the mic it shows only one tiny little bar.
Listening to the recording confirms this. It is unbelievably quiet. I
have fiddled with many settings with no luck. What am I missing here?
If anyone can help me out I would be elated. Thanks - Daniel

A quick note of affirmation regarding these mics....they are incredible FOB
up close / in the sweet spot, but suffer from far-and-away tapers
sections...for the money there is no better microphone on the market. i was
close to upgrading recently, when i remembered a few important things:
1- most shows i'm not the primary taper hence i can patch into better mics
2- for shows where i'm not the primary taper i can probably get FOB where
these oktavas can do the trick 3- i like to have fun at shows, not stand by
my rig / worry about leaving thousands of dollars behind when i go to the
bathroom. again, just my $.02 as YMMV

Me. $US 22.50. See...
<http://nemeng.com/equipment/powerpack.html>
I sell three kinds of battery powerpack - 9V-AA, 6V-AA and
6V-D. The AA powerpacks are regulated and so give constant
voltages regardless of the batteries used.
Also of interest at the above URL are the tables I have compiled

Does anyone know if it is possible to make bit-for-bit transfers from DAT=
to PC using the Yamaha UW500? I understand from previous posts that the=
Edirol UA-5 does not have this capability, i.e., it resamples the digital=
input, but I have not been able to find out if this is also the case for=
the Yamaha box.
For that matter, are there any USB devices that allow bit-for-bit input? =
The Opcode DATport claimed to allow bit-for-bit transfers, but the product=
spec was a bit unclear as to whether this applied to bidirectional=
transfers, or whether it was for output transfers only. Is it even=
possible for a USB device to drive such a transfer from it's own clock? =

I have a Conner CTD8000 that I *was* successfully using to transfer audio. Now,
when I try to read a tape, it scrolls the "error detected in data block" message
continuously (at like 90mph) and eventually fails reading. It isn't the tape,
b/c it does this with any tape I try, and I can successfully read from an older
Seagate drive that I have that is also audio capable (so I know the tapes are
not the issue...nor is my setup). Makes me wonder if the heads are dirty or
something. I have tried writing a wav to the tape in the drive that is giving
me problems, and I am able to successfuly WRITE error free .wav using the
problem drive, I just can't READ from it. Are there separate read/write
heads...I don't know that much about the transports? Anyone know? I was
thinking about running my DAT tape cleaner through it, but I thought I would ask
around first. Oh, I am using DAT2WAV (tried w/ and w/out the /errorcorrect
switch). I did try the demo of vdat, and it does read the tape, but it sounds
slowed down and the quality is pretty shitty. Any ideas?
