From: "James Ballen" <ballenjames@hotmail.com> Subject: Benefit show in berkeley Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 02:09:28 -0500 Whats up everyone? I'm heading out to this "Not in Our Name" Benefit show in Berkeley, CA next week on 1/31. I've been thinking getting together a stealth rig to use, as i don't have one of my own, and was wondering if anyone else was going to this show who was planning to tape, or if anyone on the list was just going at all! It looks to be a pretty eclectic billing, including Ani Difranco, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ozomatli, and Chuck D. Please let me know if you are going/planning to tape/or have some mics or pre you may be willing to donate for the night. thanks much! ~james _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I will be seeing an American Composer Series where some Zappa compositions will be preformed. I am doing this just for kicks as the rig I will be using is a Sony PC-62>modSBM1>D8 & if it is too much of a hassle I won't bother. Cheers ... Mark A.

Even on this list, "analog" does not mean "bad". The specs of HiFi VHS are almost identical to DAT with regard to signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range, as well as frequency response. Just 'cos HiFi VHS writes non-digital data don't mean it's crap. I'm just sayin' - SWG

From: Jeff Lester <lester@trex.sp.trw.com> Subject: DAT on TV Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 12:38:47 -0800 (PST) It's always fun seeing DATs on TV shows or in the movies. Can't remember the last time I remember seeing one, but there was one on last Friday's episode of "John Doe." There was this club DJ who was killed because he had epilepsy and some low frequency sound had interferred with some implant he had to control it. At the club, John Doe was looking at the mixing console and saw a cable coming out of, then traced that cable to under a counter where there was a Sony PCM-M1 taped that had supplied the sound. -Jeff Lester
From: "Ragan Todd" <rhinelander2130@hotmail.com> Subject: Preferred mic/preamp combos Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 21:22:56 +0000 I've read that certain mic and preamp combinations sound better than others, so I was hoping I could get some advice from users on this group. I've used the MP-2 with MBHOs, and they sound too bright for my taste in some situations. For my use and budget, the MP-2, Sonosax SX-M2, and AETA PSP-3 are the only preamps I'm considering buying. The MBHO 603, AKG 480, and Neumann KM-184 (or possibly Oktava MC-012) are mics I'd like to pair with the preamp. I'll be recording everything from amp'ed acoustic to rock to gothic/industrial. If you've used any of these mics with any of these preamps, I'd appreciate any feedback on the results, on- or off-line. Thanks. I'd like to take coaxial SPDIF output from an A>D and pass it to several decks at once. I am a bit ignorant, but understand electronics fairly well - I'm not too worried about the nuts-n-bolts construction part of it, but the actual physics involved in splitting the signal up four or five ways... From: Darryl Deyerle <ddeyerle@pacbell.net> Subject: FT: Dixie Dregs - Ventura Theatre 01-17-03 Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 19:28:02 -0800 Hey all! I got a nice recording of the Dregs the other night at the Ventura Theatre, Ventura, CA. I'd like to trade for other nice sounding DAT recordings from the Dregs, Morse, Yes, Crimson and related, and this past Gabriel tour. The show is taped with Sonic Studios 6S/L microphones with PA-6LC 65Hz LoCut batt box->Sony PCM-M1, FOB roughly 30 ft from the stage, center. I xfered to PC via Zefiro Acoustics ZA2 (coax), 48->44.1 via Cool Edit Pro( 999 overkill level), wav->CD via CDRWin and Plextor SCSI. I'm only able to trade on CDR right now, as I'm plagued with the dreaded ZA2/Via digi-out syndrome. Digital output on my ZA2 is not an acceptable possibility with my motherboard and I only have one deck in working order at this moment, hence my dilemma. There's absolutely 0% probs on digi-in, though, so DAT->PC xfers are bit for bit. Hope to hear from like-minded traders. Looking for trades that won't take over a month (preferably much less) to complete. Take care, Darryl
