From: eeast@usa.net (E.Easterly) Subject: Audio recording programs that sense Start-IDs from SPDIF-in from DAT Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 15:11:27 -0800 In an effort to scope out the DAT to HD transfer of my collection, it occured to me that almost all of my DATs have start-IDs at the beginning of each song. Are there some audio programs that will note each start ID as I record from DAT to computer via SPDIF? Thanks, Elliott
From: "J R" <ja5667@hotmail.com> Subject: VHS Vs. DAT / Analog Vs. Digital Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 18:36:58 -0500 Figures such a controversial post couldn't go without a response from the oil painting advertiser (which was an obvious spam to the digest a couple weeks ago) and ebay ticket scalper Keith Bode. Thanks again for you're newest lengthy novel to digest and life story. Truly a tear jerker. And so this isn't a completely worthless post, does anyone know of any software that will turn the perfect music on a CD into a CDR that's full of pops and clicks like you'd hear on a vinyl record. If anyone knows of any software please post it for our vinyl fans. You know, you guys could just get a nice EQ to make your CDs sound better. But I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks. The spinning of the black circle is probably too hypnotizing. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Re: VHS Vs. DAT / Analog Vs. Digital Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 15:41:15 -0800 Damn, I found more people agreed with me than I thought. One of the replies addressed the sound quality of a Studer 2" 16 track analog master reel. I'd like to have one of thse, except when I do see them on eBay they have price tags in the $15,000 range. A few years back Smithsonian/Folkways (at least I think that's who did it) put out a tribute to both Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. I lifted the sound track from my DVD to my HD. One scene in the film had Little Richard in the studio with a band of LA musicians doing Leadbelly's song "Rock Island Line". The first time I heard that track, I was driving for some work at 10PM on a sunday night on "The House of Blues Radio Hour". I was completely blown away, and tried to find that recording without success. Well, I foud it in that video. I thought Little Richard was playing piano, but someone else was. Throughout the session were repeated shots of that 2" tape at 30 ips. I know I am not alone in having an A/D converter with a tube in it, to warm up the audio quality, and make it less harsh, more of an analog softness. I have seen other units with similar function. You can keep your pops and clicks (especially during the silent gaps between songs) because I found them to be too distracting. It's imperfect and a matter of taste I guess. And I'll agree with that. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Get advanced junk mail protection with MSN 8. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
From: "James B. Wilkinson" <jimmy@CS.cofc.EDU> Subject: battery box schematic Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 19:22:41 -0500 I've just bought a pair of Core Sound Binaurals (omni's) that had no battery box with them. This must be a very simple device, and I'm handy with solder, so I thought I'd just build one. Can somebody point me to a schematic? I did a Google search and didn't turn up much. Oddly enough, one of the things it *did* turn up was a reply to somebody from Len Moskowitz. It seemed to imply that the battery box was unnecessary under some circumstances. Could that be right? BTW, what I plan to record with these is mostly woodwind practice sessions. Maybe the occasional session with a classical chamber orchestra (ca. 35 players). I think that means that I don't want any bass rolloff. Thanks guys. -- ============================================================= Jimmy Wilkinson | Perfesser of Computer Science jimmy@cs.CofC.edu | The College of Charleston (843) 953-8160 | Charleston SC 29424 If there is one word to describe me, that word would have to be "profectionist". But I think you have to bear in mind a key difference in operating principle between a DAT machine and a hi-fi VHS recorder: At the end of the day, its a _digital_ signal strem which a DAT machine is laying down onto tape, whereas the hi-fi VHS is laying down an _analog_ . The DAT playback heads, therefore, can - and do - get off with returning a lousy, noisy signal, because that signal only has to be _good enough_ to allow you to distinguish correctly between a "1" and "0". Thus you could record, say, a stream of 0,0,1,0,1,1,0 and get back a horrible 0.1, 0.4, 1.2, 0.01, 0.7, 0.9, 0.3. This, though, is still easily recognizable as "can only have been 0,0,1,0,1,1,0", and is corrected accordingly. The analog route simply can't cater for that kind of noise rejection. Intruding noise will end up at the output, unless you resort to filters, preemphasis, compansion etc. The foregoing doesn't describe how DAT or VHS stuff is really recorded, but we're talkin' principles here <g>. Tom.

From: frappster@stny.rr.com Subject: FS: Sony PCM-M1 DAT Reply-To: frappster@stny.rr.com Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 05:46:16 +0000 This DAT machine was bought new in September of 2002. I've used it to tape 10 shows, and for some slight playback at home. There is a maximum of 50 hours of usage on the machine total. Its in perfect working condition. It comes with wall wart, rechargeable NI-MH batteries that were included and the battery charger, protective dust case, and instruction manual. I bought this machine for $750. I would like $600 since its only been used very lightly and has been treated with care, but the price is negotiable. I'm also selling a pair of DPA-4061 mics that will be listed in a seperate post. I will give preference and a discount to someone willing to buy both. If you are interested please email me at frappster@stny.rr.com -Troy Frappier frappster@stny.rr.com

These mics are great for stealthing, sound good and have made me some nice recordings. They are in perfect working condition only used on about 10 occasions. Also included is the MPS-6030, the DPA battery box used to power the microphones. I will include the testing documentation that was provided to me by DPA proving the mics are matched. I bought these mics for $900 (including the battery box which was $100), I am asking $725 for both, but the price is negotiable. I am also selling an Sony M1 DAT machine listed in a previous post. Preference and a discount will go to buyers interested in purchasing both. If you are interested or have any questiones please email frappster@stny.rr.com -Troy Frappier frappster@stny.rr.com

Also note that the D100 comes with the little wired remote/display gadget. While this most unfortunately cannot start recording (although it can pause and stop), the display can be very, very handy for checking levels in a stealth situation. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com

From: "Marco Gallo" <marco@cipoo.net> Subject: Re:VHS Vs. DAT / Analog Vs. Digital Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 10:10:26 +0100 Hello, it's 7 years that I keep on reading dat-heads. Normally I do not post but this time I would like to write my opinion on the never ending discussions about analog and digital. I'll try to be clear as much as possible as english is not my native language, so, please, forgive my mistakes. Shortly I just want to point out out that, IMHO 1) I do not believe that analog is better than digital or vice versa; I believe that exist good/bad technique and good/bad technicians to record/edit music. In 2001 I record a CD with my choir and it sounds bad to me; it is not because of the digital recording: it's because of the questionable preparation (or, maybe, of the attitude) of the sound technician 2) I think it is in the human nature to think that everything is older is better: society was not so nasty 50 years ago (and 50 years ago was worst than 100 years ago, ...), Win2K is much better than XP (but when Win2k comes out on the market was very bad w.r.t. NT4.0 that is was worst than NT3.51 ...) (for those of you that hate Microsoft I could tell of all the times that I heard the same story about Sun OS much better than Sun Solaris, or SGI Irix versions) 3) today's technology, even the consumer one, is not so far from human limits; are we so sure that when we listen to a difference such difference really exist or it's just psychological? Maybe it do exist, nevertheless you can't not neglect a phycological factor in everything we see or listen that in some way influences our final opinion 4) I prefer compare a recording against the real life: I recently record a (amatorial) piano session; I can not tell any difference with the real piano when I listen to it on my stereo. For me, that tape is good. I do not mind if with a very expensive gig I would have performed a better recording: surely it would, when analyzed by laboratory instruments; probably it would not, when listened with my ears (that are not so perfect, I admit; I have serious problems over 12KHz, and also 9dB attenuation in the 6-7 KHz range) My final thought is therefore that I don't care if something is digital or analog, if there exist just one Truth, if old CDs sounds bad (maybe because they were artificiously equalized when re-mastered from the original recording: but that is abusing a technology, not that the technology is bad in itself). You are the only judge; enjoy the music you listen because you love that music; if you prefer playing it on your analog turntable, it's Ok; if you believe your CD player is better, it's again Ok. Personally, I like and enjoy music even when I listen to it even from my very cheap PC loudspeaker... I hope I have offended noone with my thoughts, Marco

UGH. another stuipd blanket statement not based in reality. i did not grow up w/ LPs. i listened to them when i was really little, cause that's all that was around, but that's it... i got into LPs when i bought a cheap turntable and a couple 7" singles, cause i thought they were cool and collectable...then i noticed how much better they sounded- yes, even w/ all the hum and clicks and pops on my at the time shitty setup. and as for making the music sound like it always should have? don't make me laugh. a few weeks ago i was lucky enough to find a '70s UK copy of the beatles white album in decent shape for a reasonable price (about 35 dollars, as opposed to the 25 or 30 dollar 2CD set). by comparison, the CD sounds like ASS. and there are tons of other examples too, even where the CD transfer isn't as piss-poor as it is w/ those beatles CD reissues...man, i will be SO happy when CDs go the way of the 8-track, and hi-res digital audio is affordable...music like it was meant to be heard, my ass... MUSIC LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE BROKEN... which i am angry enough to do now. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I mean really, you can't even compare the S/N ratio, musicality, and archival ability. It's so sweet! I also had a choir, composer, and musical scribe on hand that night to memorize the show, so we can get a true representation of the sound. I'll trade you my choir/composer for your choir/composer. I'll ask that you send first though ;-) My pal stealthed the show (o.k. he just wrote down the notes), but since it's stealthed some people might still not want it. I'll sell you a copy, I love selling copyrighted works! Oh, wait you can just order the music sheet from Amazon DOH! Now let's get back to our regularly scheduled discussion of the tour dates, trades and For Sale posts :-) Peace, Zach
