In having the right to express an opinion you should respect that others may have such too. You have been given the right to express your opinion, but if someone has another opinion (god forbid, the post you are complaining about had actual technical content... we can't let that happen on DAT-flames) you won't hear for it. It's an unknown audience that is pretty boomy & really needs some fine tuning that I don't know how to do. So, again I'm asking for help from someone who would be interested. I'll send the show & two blank discs along with return postage to anyone who might like to help. The bias voltage in the mic inputs on certain devices such as the Sony Pro Walkman cassette can power a CoreSound mic without a battery box, but the battery box improves the S/N and gives you more gain than you get from the same mics powered via bias voltage. Sorry I don't have a schematic for the battery box, but it does allow you to get more from the mics. - Ken ==================================================== Ken Loge Oregon Research Institute Applied Computer Simulation Labs http://www.ori.org/~vr/ ------------------------------ From: stuart Subject: Charlie Hunters taping policy Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 13:19:16 -0500 Does anybody know Charlie Hunters taping policy with the Quintet? It has been several years since I made some of the popular Panasonic WM60AT binaural mics, but if I recall correctly, I used one of the schematics listed on this website for my "battery box". There's nothing special about these schematics though, you're just wiring up first-order high-pass filters. http://www.minidisc.org/homemade_mics.html > Oddly enough, one of the things it *did* turn up was a reply to > somebody from Len Moskowitz. It seemed to imply that the battery box > was unnecessary under some circumstances. Could that be right? If you use a battery box you'll most likely run the output of the box into your line-in. If your deck has a mic-in (which supplies power) then you can just plug the mics directly into it and bypass the batt-box. Note that the mic-in on Sony D7/D8's is absolute crap, and you should definitely opt for the batt-box + line-in. I think the mic-in on Sony D100/M1's is a lot better, but I have never used those decks. Hope this helps, Eric ------------------------------ From: Eugene Hu Subject: Re: battery box schematic Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 11:49:05 -0800 > I've just bought a pair of Core Sound Binaurals (omni's) that had no > battery box with them. One more thing: if your unit ever needs repair, the TCD-D100 is eligible for Sony's flat rate for repair; the PCM-M1 is considered a professional unit and is not. I am currently looking for new Stones shows from the latest portion of their tour. From Pittsburgh on...that is. Likewise, I am looking for low gen trades of bands I collect, such as Zeppelin, The Stones, Neil Young, The Who....and, many more. My list is very diverse...(hell, I listed Zeppelin & The Stones in the same post....)..and, there are many possible bands that would intrest me. Also, I would be open for low gen CDR trades as well. Personally, I tape/trade many bands and in the last year have taped CSN&Y, Dylan, Aerosmith, The Stones, Plant, The Who, Stone Sour, Nickelback, Cantrell, and many more. Please feel free to shoot me an e-mail for an exhange of lists..... I am a very serious collector that attempts to obtain as much information about these "personal recordings" as I can...and, my music is not for sale, but is for trade with individuals that have similiar tastes in music. Hopefully, I'll get some responses....have a great one & Rock On!! Dat1Joker ===== __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Digital - Wax cylinders Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 20:12:26 -0500 Hey People, In response to Zach's pondering of wax cylinders, there was a guy at moe.down this past summer who recorded some, if not all of, moe.down on wax cylinder. Beautiful piece of machinery, looked like an old Victrola (sp?) but I guessed it works in reverse. Maybe they're up for trade %^P Isn't there a definite limitation to what 16 bits could record anyway (excuse me those of you who've made the 24 bit jump but the same thought applies, right or wrong)? Thus it could, in theory, never record to the nth degree what analog would actually record, due to the A>D conversion. I'm would bet that it comes damn close though. Does that make any sense? I don't know this so someone that knows for sure, it would be interesting to know. Where are the wax cylinders... ? Peace, Sean BWT: Joe Bonamassa / Milestones / Rochester, NY / 1 CD(must be Fuji/TY due to finicky burner) Note: first song missing but otherwise sounds great. I don't believe there where any other tapers there. KM140(actives/ORTF)>V2>SBM1@44.1>D100>Audiophile 2496 ------------------------------ From: "david gatewood" Subject: analog vs digital Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 01:13:09 +0000 Many good points brought up on the topic so far. The main thing is to keep an open mind. Sure, digital is easy, cheap, and convenient (especially in the field), but if you've never heard pristine vinyl played on a Walker Proscenium or other high end turntable, than you really are just stating an uneducated comment. Sure I use DAT, but I'm quite sure a Nagra IV S would produce a more satisfying result (based on hearing previous results). Digital is getting better, and when truly high bit rate audio such as 24/192 or higher becomes the norm, then the difference will be so close it could go either way. WHen I started attending CES a few years ago, the salespeople played either vinyl, DVD, or SACD with only a few slackers playing CD. Usually those were in rooms promoting DAC's that had upsampling to 24/96. Those playing vinyl usully cleaned each record before playing. Extra work? Yes, you bet! Extra nice sound quality? F*%K yeah!!!!!! The record player, as some may remember bears almost no resemblence to the high end turntables with external power supplies, and specially mounted plinth's (part of the 'table). The wide stereo sound and dynamic range can then really show through, even on those '40's and '50's recordings. I remember sitting in one room listening to Nat King Cole, where if I closed my eyes, he literally was there in the room, with full image height and depth. Now if you like cd's, and find the sound pleasing, then great! But if somebody else likes vinyl and finds that sound pleasing, then that's great too! I also have heard 2" tape at 30 ips, (as I am a recording engineer) and if you think cd's sound better, then you need to get into a studio for some listening. When I compare my remixed tape vs the DAT mixdown tape, I am sorely disappointed in the difference. But maybe when the higher end, high bit stuff becomes available.............. _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ From: Tom Cavanaugh Subject: Mike Smith of The DC5 on tour Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2003 21:27:45 -0500 Hello Heads : Some of you older heads may remeber the Dave Clark 5.
