Some explanations of digital audio, such as the "How Stuff Works"
article linked-to in a previous post, suggest that a sine wave, when
recorded in digital, becomes a series of 65,536 stair-steps, which
could, it appears, have a raspy sound, like falling down stairs
instead of sliding down a slide.
However, what this article did not explain, is that the low-pass filter,
which is included in all D>A converters as well as in your ears,
speakers, etc, both effectively and mathematically eliminate the
stairs and smooth the waveform back to it's original shape.
You may recall in early days of CD players, the manufacturers did
quite a marketing war over different filter designs, and the massive
oversampling that is standard today, as well as Sony's one-bit type
design, are the result of optimizing this technology.
I am not saying this means that digital sound is perfect (though I
believe it to be), but just to say the stair-steps in these "models" of
digital sound definately aren't there in the playback.

That is probably the standard wording that is on every
Ticketmaster ticket. I have not seen or heard about any
change in their open taping policy.
If anyone else has info to the contrary, please let us know.
I plan on taping the Jacksonville, FL show in front of God and everyone.

Did QOTSA change their policy? Or did the Venue?
I have taped at the "Old" Nita's many times with no problem.
Has anyone tried to tape at the new location?

A few years ago via trade, I got a copy of a FZ video titled _The
Torture Never Stops_ without any info on the show. Was wondering if any
of yinz knew anything. The video starts out with Black
Napkins/Montana/Easy Meat, and from the looks of things maybe is late
70s/early 80s. Also at the start, on the screen it says "An evening
with Frank Zappa" then the screen displays "The Torture Never Stops" in
larger letters.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it was discussed here a while
back that these battery box bass roll-off features only work with the
mic input. I believe, but do not understand how, that the input
impedance of the deck affects the bass roll-off. Ironic that most
people use line in with CSB type mics, yet the bass roll off will only
work with the mic input (at least on a D7/8 as I recall).
What would one have to do do make a bass roll off that will work with
the line input?

O.K., here's the deal....Yes you _are_ building a high pass filter, but one
specially for battery box applications, b/c you are also adding 9V battery
(a form of phantom) power - not part of a typical signal filter.
What the caps do is set the cutoff frequency A.K.A. rolloff (as noted
below), and also conveniently
block the voltage being generated by the recorder's mic in (caps block DC
and pass AC signals - including audio).
You can use it in the "mic in" or "line in" input. But, the sound intensity
has to be at an acceptable level
to use it in the line in. In other words, using this setup with line in
will not amplify the signal, only gives
it more dynamic range.
As far as parts, use poly caps - they are best for this application (over
ceramic, electrolyic, tantalum, etc.)
They also usually have a pretty good tolerance - 5% or less. You could
notice a difference using 10%+.
The capacitance change that 5% corresponds to, has a very small effect
(undetectable) on the cutoff frequency. Also, it only applies to the low
end frequencies - i.e. "high-pass"
I recommend using a gen-purpose PC board from Radio Shack, Digikey, etc. to
solder the parts to vs. wire-wrapping, and soldering. Also, if you are
going to make a roll-off frequency selector switch, make sure you dont use a
cheap switch - they can introduce noise if they are not making good
connections.
If anyone wants more info, you can contact me off-list.
There are a few ASCII examples out there, but they can be a bit unclear, as
is the one in the link given. Don't get me wrong, they have the right idea,
and minidisc.org has a wealth of info, but those diagrams are confusing.
First of all, there are two diagrams trying to show the same thing. Second,
the first diagram makes it look o.k. to use different cap values -Don't!
make sure they are matched to the same value, type and tolerance. What they
are trying to say is that you could use a pair of either value (among
others).
The resistor value matters, too. Make sure you use one large enough to
limit the current from the battery. Third, it is confusing which side is
the mic side and which side is the deck side. Make sure the 9V battery is
on the mic side, not the mic-in side! The cap is between the two and blocks
the 9VDC from going directly into your deck, and the deck's mic power from
conflicting with the 9VDC supply.
Check out this archive as well:

BTW, the formula for cutoff frequency is: Fc = 1 / (2 pi RC)

The Sony Beta SLS-600 Works like new and looks
Brand New, it has been well cared for and I have
the Paper work and Manual. The Sony PCM 501 all
of a sudden quit working but I suspect in the
right hands can function properly again and for a
long time as It once did, (It has a few very tiny
scratces on the top). The Same Beta Machine was
on ebay for almost $300 recently (check completed
items) I have the sales receipts and Manuals for
both the PCM 501 (Not currently working) and the
Sony Beta player/Recorder (working and looking in
top notch shape) Both for only $350.00 + $20.00
shipping via USPS Priority (red white and blue).
I am and at the present time transferring all my
dats and pcms to cdr and I no longer need these
units. I will (fwiw) throw in a beta head cleaner
tape too, not a big deal as I have only cleaned
the heads on the SLS-600 only about a dozen times
or so over the years (13)!! If you have never
heard the sounds of Beta PCM Your missing out as
I think the sound of PCM Beats the Daylights
outta DAT, as the separation, Bass and Highs are
better than DAT, Thus delivering Higher
Hi-Fidelity....(imo of course)! Email me off the
list (if you do so desire).
Thanks,

This is incorrect.
We have a few different models of battery boxes designed for the various
models of mics we manufacture. They provide a few different voltages
and impedances and in general, are not interchangeable.
Our Low Cost-series ("LC-series") of microphones can operate directly on
the low voltage "Plug-in Power" available from most current MD, cassette
and DAT recorders. Those mics are not suitable for wide dynamic range
recording with DATs -- their specifications make them more suitable for
MD recorders.
Adding a battery box to the LC-series of microphones will let them
operate with recorders that do not provide "Plug-in Power." It will
also increase the max SPL those mics can handle while at the same time
slightly increasing their self-noise and distortion. It does not
increase the S/N ratio or provide any gain whatsoever -- the battery
boxes are *not* pre-amplifiers.
In general, with the LC-series, if your recorder provides "Plug-in
Power" you shouldn't need a battery box. Don't listen to people who say
that you do.
In contrast, our Core Sound-series of microphones (the Core Sound
Binaural and Core Sound Stealthy Cardioids) can not be powered
from "Plug-in Power" -- they require the battery box that's supplied
with them.
