i've noticed that many of the (audio-only) recordings i made onto vhs hi-fi
suffer from noticeable wow/flutter -- i can hear it best in recordings of
solo piano, with the lower register notes shifting slowly up/down as if
the instrument was being played with vibrato.
anyone else noticed this problem?
any suggestions for curing it?

This is a funny statement. Get out your 'grain of salt' shaker, and consider your source...
I've used Core LCB's, with and without "battery boxes", and I can tell you this:
With a Sony D8 DAT, Core LCBs function perfectly with the 'plug-in power' of the D8 'mic in'. Until you get to a pretty loud show, that is... Then, you'll run into the "brickwalling" effect that the Sony DAT internal mic preamps are notorious for. You'll overload the mic preamp.
With a "battery box", you can run Core LCBs into the 'line' input, which I am yet to be able to brickwall. Not that you *can't*, just that I've never managed to do it with Core LCBs.
Bottom line, from my experience in the field? If you're running mics that will work on "plug-in power" like that provided by basically all the Sony field units, switching to a battery box (like the kind you can make for six bucks from the various diagrams discussed here this week) will allow you to use 'line in' and avoid brickwalling. Should you feel that the ensuing 'esoterica' about how these boxes are somehow 'matched' to these mics is valid, feel free to buy them.
I'm just sayin'.
