From: "DCA" <phisher72@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: battery power vs. plug-in power Reply-To: "DCA" <phisher72@earthlink.net> Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 19:52:54 -0500 Len, Don't forget to mention, that even if your "LC series" does not _need_ battery power, it will be limited in its dynamic range if it only uses plug-in power. I used a Sony mic that was made to be powered from the mic-in of their MD portables, even though it sounded pretty good for its tiny size (much like Core Sound and Sound Professionals mics), it showed its limitations when recording loud music. It began to saturate / clip. The mic-in voltage from an MD is only about 3-4 VDC compared to the +9VDC internal power, or +48VDC phantom power used on professional mics. In general, for live music location recording, you will get disappointing results using just a plug-in power mic, unless you are far away from the stacks. Dave >In general, with the LC-series, if your recorder provides "Plug-in >Power" you shouldn't need a battery box. Don't listen to people who say >that you do. >In contrast, our Core Sound-series of microphones (the Core Sound >Binaural and Core Sound Stealthy Cardioids) can not be powered >from "Plug-in Power" -- they require the battery box that's supplied >with them.
From: "J Van" <jvan1975@hotmail.com> Subject: Coldplay Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 19:45:42 -0600 Looking for any nice, recent Coldplay shows . I made a nice master of the 1-28-03, Houston show with Sonic Studios DSM6/P mics > M1. Runs about 90 minutes, or 2 CDs.
From: onelson@enteract.com Subject: Seeking examples of concert etiquette infractions Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 19:38:35 -0600 An excellent rock and roll talk show on WXRT in Chicago is going to be doing a show on concert etiquette, overzealous security goons, etc. I'd like to gather some recorded examples of especially jerk-like behavior. I know that a few such things have been posted here before (eg links to mp3's of people getting told to shut the fuck up). Wondering if anyone has any more. I'm not interested in trading for whole DATs just to get a few seconds of hilarity/disgust. This deck has not seen much use lately as I've gone to hard drive recording and do not need to clone dats anymore. I have never had bad clone from this deck. Buyer pays $20 insured shipping. Thanks, Cliff Bidding starts at $150 with no reserve. Thanks, Cliff
From: Myrmika@aol.com Subject: Why nomad Jukebox 3 is probably as bad as the 1 Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 20:45:21 EST i read on a 2 jukebox users sites that maximum battery life for recording with the original NJB was 13-20 minutes maximum, so that 30 minutes of recording will be anyones max on a Jukebox recorder original. I suspect that the NJB3 is similarly appalling, and that at best 45 minutes of encoding is possible... obviously the chips and the HDD write function drain batteries dry... did someone already know this? are there any other HD jukebox type ripoffs that might also one day replace the dat. shame some DIY guys didnt manage to make an upstart Jukebox sampler box, it's been begging for it ever since the rio! Thx Ant
From: Sean Cartwright <scartwri@rochester.rr.com> Subject: Matrix w/ a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro? Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 21:55:15 -0500 Hey People, Would this work? Any better suggestions, given the limitations of $$$? If anyone could offer some tips, I'd greatly appreciate it! I've never done it before (matrix) and would really like to get it right the first time, I unfortunately don't have time to practice at a show. What I want to do is something like this: KM140> > Mackie> SBM1> DAT SBD> Does this make sense/will it work (with good results)? I could put a V2 into the mix but I don't know where the best position would be (if there is one)? Are there any better options (without spending a fortune) Thanks for any help! Peace, Sean

Until you get to a pretty loud show, that > is... Then, you'll run into the "brickwalling" effect that the Sony > DAT internal mic preamps are notorious for. You'll overload the mic > preamp. I'm very glad to hear that you're enjoying our Low Cost Binaural (LCB) microphone set. One word of caution: The Low Cost-series of mics was not designed to be used for critical recording with DAT recorders. Their dynamic range and distortion characteristics don't do justice to DAT, and that's why, if you are using a DAT recorder, we strongly recommend our mid-range line of mics (the Core Sound Binaural and Core Sound Stealthy Cardiod microphone sets). A $75 set of LCB mics simply can't match the sound quality of your $700 DAT recorder. Again: if you are recording with a DAT recorder, we don't recommend the LCBs. You are throwing away 20 dB of dynamic range and using a mic set that has significantly more distortion than your DAT recorder. You'll get much better sounding recordings with our mid-range series of mics. You are correct that a battery box helps the LCBs in the situation you described. But you're missing the reason why the battery box helps the LCBs in this situation. It's not because it increases headroom or dynamic range, and not because of the higher voltage the battery box provides. It's because when you use the LCBs to record loud music into the mic input, the mics put out a level high enough to overload the mic pre-amp's input stages (what is commonly called "brickwalling"). With a self-powered mic, you'd correct this by using an attenuator cable between the mics and the recorder to drop the level. But since the LCBs are powered by the recorder, you can't use an attenuator cable between the mics and the recorder. If you add a battery box to our LCBs, since they won't then need the recorder to provide power, you will be able to use an attenuator cable and be able to feed the Mic input without overloading. Or you can feed the Line input, which can handle signals roughly 26 dB higher in level than the mic input on low sensitivity. However, if you use the Line input you will lose something important: the bass roll-off filter. The filter is matched to the impedance of the Mic input. If you use the Line input (with its much higher impedance), the filter becomes completely ineffective. So, if you have a battery box and need the bass roll-off filter function, use the Mic input and a 20 dB attenuator cable. I hope this helped! From: "Will Foy" <willfoy@pobox.com> Subject: Question for converters Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 01:51:15 -0500 Simply put, what are you doing with your old tapes? I've been taping on DAT for a number of years and recently migrated to a laptop rig, as I'm not much for stealth, never have been [no slight intended against those who are pro-stealth]. I've also been converting my shows, usually a band at a time, to CD Audio and SHN [ burning a set of each ], archiving on good cd media, with cd safe pens to indicate the pertinent information. The jury's still out on labels, so I'm holding for a while. At any rate, I remember some discussions, and I'm sure a query to the dat-heads archive search would pull these up, about the shelf-life of the actual DAT tapes, with long-term archival not being a reality for DAT as a technology. Eventually, the magnetic coding will be degraded, due to what we called "bit-rot" and the resulting recording would have dropouts and worse. So... In light of that, what are other converters doing with their tapes? Selling them as a sort of one-pass tape that happens to have music on it? Sitting on their collections, just because? What else? I don't know that I'd want any "creative" uses for them to make a handy park bench or anything, but I'd like to start by slowly getting some of my shows either to others, or at least out of my tiny office here at home. Ideas? Thanks a bunch... From: Taper4dat@aol.com Subject: ISO: London UK taper for gig 27/2/03 Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 04:33:58 -0500 I assume no London UK tapers have serious plans for taping DEF LEPPARD at the Brixton Academy in London UK on the 27/2/03? So since I live too far from London and I am unable to go, is there any chance that a London taper could tape this gig for me? I will even cover ticket and blanks expenses if any DAT taper would be willing to tape Def Leppard at the Brixton Academy, London UK on the 27/2/02. This is the last show on the UK leg of the tour, which I would love to hear a copy of. Any help would be much appreciated. Email me off list if you can help me out. Thanks, Andrew
From: "Joe Ray Skrha, Attorney at Law" <joeray@ptialaska.net> Subject: Looking for recordings from Australian Band FRUIT Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 03:48:51 -0900 Hello My Friends, Last summer I had the distinct pleasure of seeing a band that blew me away unlike any new band has blown me away since seeing CSNY for the first time back in 1969. The bands name is FRUIT and they are from downunder in Australia. They consist of 4 ladies and a guy drummer. The primary guitarist-singer-songwriter is a gal by the name of Susie Keynes. This lady can sing like a combination of Sheryl Crow and Joni Mitchell and play guitar with the best of the touring lead guitarists... Peev, she'd even give you a run for your money. She is considered to be one of the best songwriters in her native country. Recently Susie has been billed as " An evening of 4 stunning solo performances by Australian women: Andrea Rienets (VIC), Heather Frahn (SA), Kerrianne Cox (WA) and Susie Keynes (SA)." I didn't even plan on seeing them when they toured through Alaska but for my daughter Katie Skrha who was booked to open FRUIT's concert in Kenai,Alaska. Katie did her hour long set and before Fruit took the stage, I had a chance to see the bands instruments up close: electric guitar and bass, acoustic guitar, keyboard, drums and many percussion instruments. Katie talked me into sticking around for a few songs. Once Fruit started to play, their 3 and 4 part harmony was extremely impressive. Susie told me she had often studied David Crosby's harmony style. The harmony's were crisp and to the point without being lost or overwhelming the melody. Best of all I could understand their songs and follow the lyrics. Several of the more impressive songs were "Sunsets and Hurricanes', Islands,Wild Angel, Wind Blows and Dreaming". I especially liked 'Kisses For Her, Inside My Mind and These Things' which are Susie Keynes solo songs. If any of you folks from Australia have any of Susie Keynes concerts recorded, please let me know. I have to get more of this artist. Same goes if you have recorded Susie as part of her touring band FRUIT. Either solo or with Fruit, I strongly suggest you have to see Susie Keynes in person. She has one solo CD out by the name of "KISS FOR HER FEARS"... Fruit has been together since 1996 and had recorded 8 CD downunder.Their latest is called "LIVE AT THE BASEMENT". All of their music can be obtained through their website at: http://www.fruit.on.net/ Why these folks haven't headlined a major tour in America is beyond me. They have played the lower 48 as well as an extended 2 week side tour of Alaska playing in clubs for 500 to festivals of 50,000. Many of their songs can be heard in full off their website by clicking on Sounds, Albums and Merchandise. Susie Keynes solos CD can be found on FRUITS website also. Give yourself a treat and get to know the music of Susie Keynes and FRUIT...and you too may be blown away like I was... Pray For Peace, Joe Ray Skrha

From: <john@thedalys.com> Subject: looking to buy mics Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 10:54:41 -0500 Hi all, Looking for some comments on a set of mics that would mainly be used to record "jam band" type groups mostly in small to medium size clubs. Not planning on taping big arenas and festivals. Would like to keep the price in the neighborhood of $500/pair new or used. These mics would feed into my D8. I don't have a pre amp or A-D converter. I suppose that would be next. After much reading it seems like something with a cardoid pattern is the way to go? Thanks for any responses. -john

Whorse I am hoping there is someone out there who can preserve this show: at "The Gig" on Melrose in Hollywood New band with a great sound. Hard rock with striking female vocals. This gig has turned into a showcase with many record company scouts and agents on-hand. This is only the second gig for this band (in L.A.). Click the "Music" button at: http://www.officialwhorsesite.com for a couple of music samples. Please let me know (off-list) if you can tape tonight -- I would like a copy for the band's archives. I do have all gigs from the band's "freshman" tour in the mid-west.
