Just finishing up part of the never ending quest of transferring my DAT
collection to CD (and archiving SHN backups) .... and since I'm running out
of space in the "library", I figured I'd offer up some of those DATs here
as a trade for blanks. So for any newbies looking to jumpstart their music
collection, here's your chance......
Artist / Date / Location / Source / Media
Bruce Hornsby 8-22-95 Hampton Beach, NH - SBD (2 Maxell Pro 124)
Wynton Marsalis 8-3-94 New York City - SBD (1 Panasonic 120)

Buddy Guy 4-9-93 Washington, DC SBD (1 Panasonic 120)
What I'd like to do is get one person to take all 20 tapes. You can arrange
to have 20 Sony DGP90 dat tapes sent to me (AM-Dig has them for $1.99
each), and when they notify me the blanks are in transit, I'll ship the
dats to you priority mail. Drop me a line if you're interested.
Ready set shango...... Robbie
PS I'll have another mixed back of goodies ready to offer up in the near
future, so if you're interested in getting some of the DATs I'm
transferring, drop me an e-mail and I'll keep you updated.

Howdy all,
I'm not going to be able to tape this hometown gig due to time constraints.
I've got a pair of section EEE seats at the Pepsi center 2/18/03 that I'd
like to trade for some (non-taper) seats on the floor. I'd really not have
to deal with this last minute.....
Peace,

Good idea. I've mostly avoided this problem of cheap media,
but I've had quite a number of discs go south because of the
labels stuck on them. One method to "rescue" what seems like
an unreadable disc is to use the BlindRead/BlindWrite ( www.blindwrite.com
) suite of programs to do a raw image copy, and then burn another
copy of the disc from that image. BlindRead will do a "raw data"
read of any disc, essentially ignoring the error correction encoding
and accepting whatever bits it's given. This may seem like exactly
the wrong thing to do, but in the case of a physically damaged
disc, heeding and interpreting the CIRC error correction encoding
will often confuse software into rejecting a read as flawed,
when in reality it's not nearly as flawed as it appears. I've
rescued probably twenty or thirty discs that were otherwise unreadable
in my Plextor drives AND any audio CD players I tried to play
them in, by this method:
1 Make a raw image copy,
2 Burn that image to a rewritable disc (just to save media),
3 Extract the tracks from the RW copy with EAC.
(4 If the copy is good, save a SHN backup!)
It doesn't always work, but in my experience it mostly has.
If you have a Plextor drive, there's a utility called PlexTools
that also has a feature (reputedly very powerful) for doing a
similar type of raw data read. I have the program, but haven't
tested it against BlindRead yet. If you bought your Plextor
drive in the US, you didn't get PlexTools, and in fact CAN'T
even buy a copy in the US - it's a UK/Europe-only app, for some
obtuse reason. But you can download it from www.plextor.be,
and there's a registry setting that will allow you to install
it. Contact me if you need this registry tweak.

I have had an interesting three months with Sony repair service. First they
told me that the D3 was still eligible for repair under the $179 flat rate.
I sent it in, asking them to repair the digital in/out seven pin connection
and the head. After they received it, they replied that since the unit was
older than 9 years, it did not qualify for the flat rate. The repair bill
for the above was estimated at $410.
The head was about $200, the seven pin IC and cable another $200 or so. I
denied the head replacement and asked for the digi in/out repair.
They then informed me that the parts had to be shipped from Japan and would
take about 12 weeks. I authorized it and waited the 12 weeks.
Then, they shipped the unit back. Great!
But, wait, the digi in/out still did't work. So I call Sony, they go
checking and I get a voice mail this week. "The parts are no longer
available to reapir the digi in/out".
my advice, caveat emptor.
Anybody have a d3 that's dead but the digi in/out worked? I may be
interested.
Thanks,

Here is your chance to own a ALD (Assisted Listening Device) Receiver
Box.
This one is the most sought after version. It can tune into any of the
known ALD frequencies used in venues throughout the country. Just simply
turn the dial on top of the box until you hit the active frequency !!
e-Bay Item # 3309599255
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3D2296&item=3D3309
This box is pre-set to the most commonly used frequency 72.9

So if you are hearing impaired here is your chance to hear what you have
been missing.
I have used these from Florida to Seattle & have great success.
They have worked in Theaters,Arenas & Stadiums !!

Why post a notice saying that a tree is closed, then immediately posting the entire structure, without ever having made an offer to the DAT-Heads list for spots on said tree? That sort of posting is a complete waste of time and space.

I do DAT transfers on the Masterlink. It's easy and doesn't tie up my
computer.

I do editing, EQ, fades, compression, reverb and normalizing on the
computer. The Masterlink is a fine 24/96 recorder (if you add a nice
mic-pre/A-to-D) and is also fine for rendering to redbook CD format, but
its user interface is a bit clumsy for detailed work.

Subject: re: Tascam DA-P1 questions
Date: Wed, 05 Feb 2003 13:24:55 -0500
Thank you for the e-mail info. I've been told by others "why bother" with trying to do computer backups to DAT... it's because you can get up to 40 GB from 1 DAT (150 m DDS4) but I'm not sure such big tapes would safely run in the da-p1... 150m = 300 min, and da-p1 manual doesn't recommend over 120 min, due to tape thickness. 300 min = 5 hours so this could work for overnight drive backups in real-time. I think CDs still can't match DAT for space. Has anyone used large DATs (e.g. DDS4) on the da-p1?
Glad to hear that the da-p1 inputs map to outputs in INPUT MONITOR mode, i.e. w/o needing a tape. Someone warned me, though, that DATs introduce delay in the input->outputs signal path (digital only? A/D delays ?), which could be a problem when driving an audio rack with the deck's SPDIF outputs (the audio rack would be simultaneously receiving these along with its own MIC/LIN inputs).
The last major stickler is brickwalling: I think this is an issue for studio (e.g. close-miking drums, which must have a hell of a transient) as well as loud live situations. I want to avoid external MIC preamps to keep as few stages in the analog path as possible. Apparently, it's possible to mod the internal preamps to get rid of this problem (Oade will do this, but only if you purchase the deck from them)... in my due diligence, I came across a DAT-heads article describing such a mod for the da-p1 but lost the thread: would anyone be kind enough to point me to it, or any other such article? I'd be willing to do the mod myself if need be.
I appreciate the newbie assistance :-) If I do get this deck, I hope to actively participate in these forums in the future. One piece of info I can provide is that the feedback from others is that this is a solid deck. DAT technology is waning, though...
Seems that most DAT-headers are into live rock concert taping (I've always regretted missing that Dead concert in '92 when I was living in the East Bay :-). Are any of you into nature field recording?
regards,
Sy
