The only exception I can think of is phono where you might need a little more cable capacitance to load the cartridge correctly. Is the best way to avoid brickwalling with the Sony d8 is to go through the line in? If so then a power source is needed correct? Or should I just use a attenuator cable with the mics and use the mic in? best regards dxd If any one has mastered the skill of removing a whole lotta bass . Shoot me an email. From: mitchell@hibbs.com Subject: Re: Dish > D8 Date: Wed, 05 Feb 2003 14:39:37 -0800 (PST) If you were to get a Dish PVR, you can record to the internal harddrive and use a Linux box to retrieve the info off of the drive. You could than manipulate it on the computer as you wish (and perhaps strip the category codes). Seems possible. US Robotics (I believe) also makes a wireless analog transmitter...designed to let you play music off of your computer (ex MP3s) through your stereo w/out them being in the same room. I have heard it works quite well. You might be able to use it in reverse and essentially do dish>USR wireless>hdd mitch

I tried one once at a local theater here and was having trouble getting it hooked up to my deck, (for a John Prine show) and as a result of my extra light activity, I ended up getting busted by an usher and had to take my deck back to the car...Got a great recording the next night though with my Sonic Studios DSM-6 mics... I'm also curious as to the specs (freq. resp, s/n ratio, etc.) I suppose you could use a Y-cable to convert the mono signal to a stereo to feed a DAT, providing the signal quality was worth it. I am well aware to the arguments about all kinds of cables and certainly respect the skepticism many hold for high-dollar designer cables. Nonetheless, I believe I have heard a difference. It's just not a battle I chose to entertain anymore. For those interested in trying out exotic cables, we have them and we offer a 45-day satisfaction guarantee. In support of Audio Magic, they are building xlr>rca cables utilizing the resistor network recommended by Benchmark Media for use with the AD2K AES/EBU output. I'm not convinced that the resistors make a major difference, but they are adhering to a design spec presented by a respected analog-to-digital converter manufacturer. It's 2 years old, with very little use. Probably less than 100 hours record and playback! I have the manual, remote and original box. It is in perfect working condition, and I've never had a problem with it. No scratches of dings. I will sell it for $300, shipped via UPS next day. Fully insured. Please e-mail me if interested. Rick
From: "Philip" <philip.murphy@upplandsvasby.mail.telia.com> Subject: spd/if noise Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 12:12:03 +0100 > From: cook@eklektix.com > Subject: spd/if noise <snip> > In the process of getting this running, I discovered an interesting > phenomenon, spd/if data errors. Fortunately, I discovered this = problem > before I had spent loads of time copying DATs to the hard drive. >=20 > Interestingly, there was more distortion when listening to a 48K DAT = compared > to a 44.1K DAT. This isn't too surprising as the cable would act > like a low pass filter and attenuate 48K data more than 44.1K data. Hi, Did you match the cable impedance with a 75 Ohm load at the receiver? A = 10m run of RG59 should have less than 3dB attenuation at 500MHz so I = doubt the cable is causing the difference between 44.1kHz and 48kHz = (which correspond to frequencies around 4MHz, albeit with a lot of = harmonics if decent signal integrity is to be maintained). > Further playing with this, I connected a 200 ohm trimmer potentiometer > across the spd/if line and noticed that I could introduce the same = errors > by dropping the resistance and reducing the spd/if signal levels. Adding a potentiometer will obviously affect transmission because = matching will be worsened and reflections will cause overshoot and = undershoot at the receiver. The trimmer will also affect the amplitude = of the signal launched onto the cable at the transmitter end (500mV is = the S/P-DIF requirement). Cable length is another factor in this = equation - reflections will get worse with longer cables. Some S/P-DIF receivers (I believe the CMI 8732 is one of these) are = sensitive to the rise/fall time of the received signal - if it's not = fast enough they misinterpret bits and you get "noise". One way to = combat this is to add an amplifier (usually a CMOS logic gate) at the = receiver but correct matching is (as always) essential. Some S/P-DIF transmitters produce very low rise-time signals (for = example my stationary Pioneer DAT) which some receivers have difficulty = with. I don't how what transformer you used but it is possible to build your = own low-cost transformer using a Philips ferrite toroid and some = insulated wire - if anyone wants details I can dig them out.
