Keith ------------------------------ From: "Holland, John" Subject: FS: Graham-Patten ADC-20 Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 14:18:09 -0500 There is a dip switch on both the ADC-20 and the DMIC-20 that toggles between 48kHz and 44.1kKz. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone's in the market for this unit but doesn't like sample rate conversions. Also, I think Chris uses a V2, so it should already be set accordingly if that's your pre :) >From: "Chris Maler" >Subject: FS: Graham-Patten ADC-20 >Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 04:56:27 +0000 > >Selling my Graham-Patten ADC-20. Whole wav file comparison? Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 14:31:23 -0500 Hey all, Thanks Jason, for your help. As an FYI to anyone else who runs into this, or who gets curiously slow processing when working on large wav files: I got a very helpful email from Gordon Gidluck, who mentioned he had similar issues before he got his DMA (Bus-Mastering?) sorted out. Turns out my DMA mode was disabled on my hard drive (Maxtor 7200 rpm, 40G). Enabling this (Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Disks/"hard drive in question"/Properties) speeded up my operations by about 3-4 X, and my CPU usage dropped from 90% down to around 3%. I suspect when I upgraded to Win98, my DMA defaulted to "off". I haven't checked the popping issue again (this was just last night), but I suspect this will fix it, as it's a pretty big change. I was helped by using an app called dskbench.exe, which appears to be written specifically to test DAW hard drive operation. Very cool, and pin-pointed the problem pretty quickly. I highly recommend it! I got it from here: http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/files/scsivside7 And there appears to be a bunch of other good info here. It's a quick check if your processing is slower than it should be... Thanks again. Mac Previously, I said: Hey Folks, I've got a Prodif 24 (ISA) running in a 500MHz PC, with an AGP video card. I extract from DAT ( Sony 670) via an optical cable (SPDIF), with all auto sensing and other stuff turned off. I have been getting maybe 5-15 pops or clicks (both channels) in a one hour recital (organ music, if it matters), randomly scattered. By increasing the buffer size and number (in Samplitude) I was able to reduce this number of pops, but not eliminate it. I tried EAC, but it seems to automatically produce a re-sampled wav at 44 kHz and 16 bit resolution (I like to do resampling in Samplitude at 32 bit resolution... they say it's better that way). Besides, I believe that EAC error checking only works on CDROM extraction, because it can tell the drive to go back and read things over again a couple times. Hard drive is 7200 rpm 40G Maxtor. Questions: 1. Does anybody know (short of getting a different i.e. non-ISA card) how I might get these pops and clicks to go away completely? 2. Does anybody know of an app that will let me compare two complete wav files(if I were to extract twice), and "fix" (the way EAC compares and fixes on the fly) any differences that it finds. Or even if it just returned a report of the position of "suspicious" jumps in the wave-form, so I could go in and fix or snip or smooth them out using Samplitude? Is this what "declicking" software does? Since the errors are usually just abrubt jumps in the sample values, I can find them manually, but it takes a while. Thanks, Mac ------------------------------ From: Hepcat581@aol.com Subject: Newbie to the DAT taping scene, question about DAT rig Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 15:03:22 -0500 Hey all, I'm newbie to the DAT-taping scene and, well, I feel almost *stupid* asking a question that is not so technical in nature. Well, anyway, I'll suck it up in hopes that someone (most likely ANYONE) in this here group can help me out b/c the prob i'm having probably is really simple for all those who are quite experienced with DAT rigs. PROBLEM: As I said, I'm a newbie and recently acquired a rig--a TCD-8, AKG 3000B and AKG 1000 mics complete the rig. I went out the other day to get an XLR>1/8 inch adapter for the mics. I've been fucking with this thing ever since--i just get digital hiss everytime I plug in the 1/8" to the D8 with the mic plugged in and, for a second, the sound levels fluctuate making me think something is being picked up outside of the static of the 1/8" going into the D8. QUESTION: Can anyone out there tell me why this isn't working? And what I should do to remedy this situation/what I should get. It might be important to mention that the 3000B runs on phantom power. Any help is GREATLY appreciated, as I want to get this rig up and running very soon. Reply-To: "DCA" Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 18:06:04 -0500 Hey Pedro, It looks to me like it is a heat-related problem that melted the plastic in the shape of the battery. If it were a leaky battery, it would be messy on the inside - corroded, acid residue, etc. Since I can't really see the inside, I can't tell, but it would be obvious to you. I do see an inside contact in one pic, and it looks perfectly clean - so I think you can rule out chemical breakdown of the plastic. Now, the question is - Why did the batteries overheat? I can't really help you there. If the batteries became shorted this could happen. For instance, in the case of an internal device (D8) fault. I have not heard of bad batteries themselves causing overheating, I suppose it is possible, but unlikely. How did the deck behave last time your friend used it? Was this caused by one-time damage or an ongoing problem? I would have the device tested for current draw / proper operation before buying a new sled, then finding out there is a bigger problem, and possibly ruining another sled. Smelled something smoking and it was my pants... %^) I was able to repair the damage from that one in the oven, but later lost it. I called Sony about a replacement and they like wanted $32 for it... Sheesh... Someone here on the list gave me a suggestion which I followed that seemed to work pretty well. Go to radio shack and pick up a 4 AA battery holder. It has those 9 volt like connectors on the end, just take some needle nose pliers and flatten those and you're set. Total cost $1.49 if you already have needle nose pliers. It's sorta hard to get out, so keep those needle noses handy. B as to WHY it happened... something obviously shorted out the terminals... Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 23:40:21 -0500 I am helping a friend setup a stereo for a small store he's opening. He's on a short budget, and he had only a few requirements - a record player and non-obtrusive speakers. Another friend came through with an older, audiophile record player, so I quickly settled on a Bose Acousticmass system. You can see it here: http://bose.com/home_audio/ht_speakers/am3/ While Bose doesn't pack the best sound, they do make unobtrusive, quality, dependable products. I thought that the specs stated that the "sub" accepted an rca input. I was wrong. I have a cheap turntable mixer (phono pre-amp) for the record player, and I was hoping to use the line-outs from the mixer to go to the "sub". The "sub" takes "speaker wire". The type that comes from an amp/reciever. Damn. What can I do? Is my only option replacing my cheap turntable mixer ($75) with a more expensive "receiver"($200). Damn. Anybody have any bright ideas? I'm supposed to have this ready on Wednesday. My only other feasible option is exchanging the Bose speakers for a pair of Bose outdoor powered speakers. But they won't fill up the space nearly as well as this system does...
