Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 08:35:28 -0500 Hey there, As for buying something, there's various stuff out there, below say $150, but if you're into making stuff yourself, I've got a pretty good and easy design that costs about $10-20 depending on how fancy you want it. I've built a couple pre-amps now, one powered from the wall, and one battery powered. They are "mic" pre's based on their high-gain setting of around 20+ db. The low gain setting is about 2x (6 db?). These are based pretty heavily on the Headwize headphone preamp designed by Chu Moy, found here: http://headwize2.powerpill.org/projects/showproj.php?file=cmoy2_prj.htm http://headwize2.powerpill.org/projects/index.htm They have a bunch of other projects, too (see second link) if you're interested, plus a lot of links to other DIY sites. If you're handy with a soldering iron, and have some patience, this is a nice way to go. The version I made includes a three position gain setting, and a "volume control" (input attenuator pot) in case your mics have a big output. The main deviation from the Chu Moy design is the incorporation of a battery for mic power, which requires a couple more components. This part of the design was lifted from a battery box at a DIY Mic site that I can't find at the moment. Drop me an email for details. The result is a pretty quiet mic pre, for cheap. The cassettes fast forward and rewind fine, but when I try to play them the get stuck, and bind in the deck. I"ve tried 2 cassette decks, and i still can't make them play. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get the cassettes to play? thanks colin ------------------------------ From: "gordon wilson" Subject: don't reply to the whole digest....... Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 16:33:22 -0500 Okay - so I asked a silly questions last week about speakers and amps. I solved the problem by selling my amp (Alesis R1500) to my friend to power his Bose setup. It sounded great in the store, and I got to use the money from the amp, towards an upgrade of my amp. I bought a Hafler P1500 for $375 @ B and H. It sounds fine, but its introduced a "hum" into the left speaker (channel 1). This was not there with the Alesis. I have the amp plugged into a Furman power conditioner (the same slot as the Alesis). The amp is fed by my mixer. The hum is there when the mixer is turned off. Its also there when I plug the amp directly into the wall. Is this the famed 60 cycle hum? A ground loop? Anybody have any idea how to get rid of it? thanks, gary ------------------------------ From: "- -" Subject: ISO: Steath Taper in St Paul/Minneapolis Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 22:32:27 +0000 Hi, if you're able to go and tape one show at Fitzgerald Theatre on April 13th please reply privately for details! Craig Willoughby and I made and it has been used less than 10 times. Shipping will cost about $8, so make an offer that includes that if interested. I also have a pair of sony mvr600 headphones for sale. $50 plus shipping gets them to you. Jeff _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
