I know the USB Edirol will be slower than the RME (which uses the PCI computer interface) but I like its portability and options to record directly to my computer through the XLR inputs. However, my primary function is to transfer DATS to my computer. As far as that goes, will both of these units provide seemless digital transfers to my computer without any loss? If they do, can anyone see any reason why I would not want to go with the Edirol UA-5 over the RME 96/8? Thanks Aaron D ============================== Check out http://www.nickspicks.com for a review of the ua-5. One of his main -s on it is that there are (USB-induced?) artifacts with SOME computers. regards, Sy -- _______________________________________________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup Meet Singles http://corp.mail.com/lavalife

I only use the coax input, so I can't speak for the xlr connection, but if it is of the same quality as the rest of the card, you can't go wrong. The card does straight digital transfers with no sample rate conversion at 32k, 44.1k, 48k and 88.2 and 96 k. The quality of the AD and DA is also excellent. I use mine in linux, so I can't speak about windows or mac. I have no experience with the Edirol, so I'm just providing my experience with the RME. Hope that helps. Trevor
From: Rich Mays <richmays@comcast.net> Subject: RE: Edirol UA-5 or RME 96/8 Reply-to: richmays@comcast.net Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 10:22:23 -0500 I just went through a bit of audio hell with cards-- I needed 24-bit AES/EBU and analog, so my choices were the LynxONE or the RME DIGI96/8 PAD. The Lynx was very attractive in terms of features, so I bought it but could never work out capatibility problems between my software and the ASIO driver. (Problems were buffer and clock issues.) The Lynx parameter dialog was not exactly intuitive, either. Lynx tech support kept insisting that the card was compatible with my main application, so all the problems must be my fault, right? I gave up and bought the RME and could not be happier. I had to make one call to tech and the glitch was easily and quickly solved. The card has ceased to be a factor-- I just choose SPDIF or AES/EBU, adjust the analog out levels for monitoring, and I'm off! Be aware that you must build a TRS to stereo RCA adapter for the analog stuff. My advice is to first check for conpatibility with your software-- make absolutely sure the card you want is compatible or you may end up on the same donkey trail I was on! What exactly did you have repaired? If you had it realigned, it may be that the masters you recorded before the arealignment were recorded that way and will not play back right on any deck in proper alignment. One time I dropped my D8 and didn't realize for quite awhile that it was out of alignment; the matser played back fine on that deck, but with lost of noise on other decks. I had to make clones of all my masters recorded with that deck since the drop before I got it realigned, and afterwards I had no deck that could play them right, so it's good that I did. From: "John Florek" <jflorek@csus.edu> Subject: ISO: Sacto-Tahoe tapers Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 11:46:43 -0800 Hey DAT-heads! I finally rejoined the digest after my 6 month "hiatus"... I have a D7 that is in need of some maintenance...does anyone know if there's a way to check error rates or get other info on these machines? Does anyone know of a reliable shop in Sacramento that could have it serviced for me by tomorrow afternoon? Tall order, I know, but I've been summoned to tape moe. at Caesar's Tahoe tomorrow (2/20), by members of the moe-L, because it looks like there may not be anyone else there taping. If anyone near Tahoe is interested in taping, go and do it! You won't be dissapointed...moe. is kicking butt right now, and this show is far from sold out! If not, are there any tapers in the area that could lend me a preamp and a more reliable deck? How 'bout a preamp and a battery sled for my D7? Also, moe. is playing at the Circus Maximus Showroom: http://www.parkplace.com/caesars/tahoe/Display.aspx?contentID=5328 or http://www.parkplace.com/resources/cmsimages/live/uf_7098_DownloadMap_22 FFCEE6-BCD7-4EFC-A846-4E3D15E45A5F.pdf ...anyone have any experience with this room? Or rooms like it? Do you think my C1000S's will be adequate? I know they're pretty versatile, but I'd like to hear from some experienced tapers... Please reply offlist, and have a good one! john

First time, he opened for Grisman, and I got SBD's. Second time, he headlined. No yea or nea, so I stealthed, NO SEARCH. Third time was a mixed bill with the guy that looks like Rocky Rococo (forgot his name, brain freeze). Signs for no taping, I got my stuff in, my friend got stopped. Stealthed from behind the SBD, not so hot. Probably call the venue beforehand. Also, if it's nice theatre, assume no search (they don't want to offend the high rollers, even post 9-11), but still stealth. You can ask the soundman if you get gear in. Better yet, have someone else ask, in case it's a no-go. His SBD's are f&*kin incredible, like he's in your living room. Its going to be heading towards ebay in a few days if nobody on this list is interested. Im not giving up the ghost, just downsizing my inventory. #1- Sony PCM-M1. Very low hours, as this deck was purchased at a local music store when they liquidated, and had been primarily used as a backup, and it always worked great. HOWEVER, I have not used it in a long time, and it appears to have some sort of electro-mechanical problem with the opening mechanism. It will power up fine on AC or batteries, but I cant get the door open to test anything, and I don't want to take a screwdriver to it. No box, but I have the manual and all accessories. Make me a reasonable offer :) #2- Sony TCD10-ProII. Under 300 hours, and includes 2 good batteries, 1 not-so-good battery, AC adapter and battery charger. This deck is similar in size and function to the DA-P1, and it includes a variety of inputs including XLR, unlike the TCD10. Includes the manual and the service manual, carry case and strap, the rather large and cumbersome wired remote and whatever else I can find that belongs with it. I have a few XLR cables of various lengths to go with it as well. Looking for $800-ish #3- ATR55 tele/shotgun microphone-- designed and used for video cameras, but also works pretty well for DAT players or minidisc, as it terminates in a 1/8" miniplug. Best offer #4- Oade battery for M1-- includes the larger battery, connector cable for M1, standard charger, and case. They make cables for other decks that will work with this battery, just need to call them. $75 #5- Core Sound Binaural mics. Standard entry level mics, with battery box and quick-disconnect- 2 positions, flat and filtered. These mics had clips that popped onto the back of them, but they are long gone. Otherwise, as good as new. $150 Please reply off-list if interested. Thanks! BWT - Woody Guthrie Tribute show 02/01/2003, recorded with Oade minis into an M1, left side of the stage. Featuring Jimmy LaFave, Ellis Paul, Eliza Gilkyson, Slaid Cleaves, and Joel Rafael. Stealth job, but sounds pretty good!
