Hey fellow DAT-heads,
I am planning on taping No Doubt again. This time it'll be their show at
Hammerstein Ballroom this Monday February 24th. I will be using KM-140s >
AETA PSP-3 > Sony M1
I talked with No Doubt in the past and found out they do not allow taping.
Therefore, this will be stealth. I have never been to this venue and need as
much info as possible, including where the best spots on the floor are (I
think No Doubt uses a mono mix, but I'm not certain).
Most importantly, I need to know if there are any metal detector wands and
heavy pat downs at entry. I will be alone and crotching all this gear by
myself : (
If anyone wants to meet up and help me tape, or tape with another setup, that
would be great. The band is not on tour now--they'll just be in town for the
Grammy's.
Thanks,
Tom

Subject: Early REM DATs for trade
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 20:59:54 -0500
I'm not a big REM collector, but I have a few early
shows on DAT: 1982.04.38, 1982.08.24, 1982.11.06,
1983.07.13, and 1983.09.24. 4 of the 5 are soundboards
and one is a DAT FM recording. All are at least
very low gen, with a few possibly being from (analog)
masters. I don't know if these are widely circulated
or not, but I'd like to trade for other comparable
quality, early REM shows.
I'm also always looking for June Tabor/Silly Sisters,
the Proclaimers, Colorblind James, and Catfish Keith.

The key difference here, with the Nomad roughtly 5X5 inches, and
the D7/D8 roughly 5X3 inches, one will slip into a jeans pocket and
one won't. The M1/D100, of course, are even smaller.
Also, Sony's portable DATs produce studio-quality recordings, at
least through the line or digital input, never "miss a sample," rarely
lose the whole recording (can't say never), record for 6 hours or
more on one set of batteries (and one tape in LP mode), and have
good VU meters.
I don't think the Nomad is even supposed to work that well, and if it
does someday, it will be in spite of, not because of, solid audio
engineering. (IMO)

Hi Aaron (and All),

Edirol

As you will be transferring in real-time, USB vs. PCMCIA, etc... is
insignificant. Either of these products can pass audio quickly enough
to record a DAT tape.
>but I like its portability and options to record directly to my
computer >through the XLR inputs.
This is definitely an appeal of the Edirol box.

>RME 96/8?
The RME 96/8 supports 24-bit/96kHz. By getting a card of this caliber,
you open the door to trading/collecting high-resolution recording.
I have many clients using the 96/8 and really liking it. The UA-5 is a
decent value at the price point but if you can forego the portability, I
would recommend the RME card.
I hope this helps.

I am selling my Sonicase Pro. It is only a few months old and is
basically brand new. I am asking $150 for it. I don't believe Sonic
Sense is making these anymore. E-mail me privately if interested.
Thanks.

I have no need for 2 home DAT decks anymore so I would like to sell this
one. It is great shape. I had the heads replaced a few years ago and it
hasn't many hours since then. I have the original box, manual, remote
and rack ears for it. E-mail me if interested. Thanks.

The Nomad produces decent quality recordings through line in (I
haven't really tested it) and works fine with digital input. The
latest firmware doesn't drop samples, and problems are, I'd guess,
less common than with Sony misloads. You get a lot more than 6 hours
on one set of (2) rechargeable batteries. The VU meters aren't great.

as the subject reads i have a mod SBM-1 for sale, i am sticking with the MMe. i am not the original owner, but i have the receipt for the mod from Oade. it has the ADC 24 SBM LINE UPGRADE. i have the original box (no manual), and a d-cell battery sled that i never used. the unit works flawlessly.
appearance-wise it is a little rough: the 'paint' is rubbing off a little along the sides, there is electrical tape on part of the 7-pin plug, and the battery door opens very easily (i have kept a rubber band around it to be safe). you can see pictures here:

asking $600 (includes priority shipping), OBO. i just bought it a few months ago for $600, so don't email any lowball offers. email me if you have any questions. i can take paypal to speed things up. i am going out of town for a few weeks on the 28th, so i would like to ship it out before then.

Hi list,
Unfortunately due to some work commitments which has recently popped up I am no longer able to tape my fave group DEF LEPPARD at Brixton Academy in London UK thursday next week.I had planned to go at that show with a friend of mine so I have actually 2 tickets for that show laying here who I really hope I could find a taper to send them to instead of putting them in my garbage can.It would be too bad if I have to put these 2 tickets in my garbage can so are you or someone you know in UK able to tape the show below for me if I send you the 2 tickets and money for the blanks/postage?
Here is the info for the show:
DEF LEPPARD: Thursday 27/02/03 London, UK Brixton Academy
The only thing I ask for in return is a copy of the taper's recording on CDR or on DAT tape.
If you are not able to tape the show above do you know of any other tapers living not too far from London UK who is able to go there and tape that show for me?
I would even be willing to cover any transport costs(for example a train ticket) for a possible taper if you live in London UK area....I just think it would be too bad to put these 2 tickets in my garbage.I don't want to sell them either as it's hard to get them sold.A possible taper can bring a friend with him to the show as I will send him 2 tickets.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to help out in this pity situation.I am able to send the 2 tickets and money for blanks by express mail(as soon as you respond to this email) to any taper who could be willing to tape the show above. It's only 6 days left to the show so I'm hoping on a quick response from a kind soul.Just forward this email to ANY taper in UK who may be able to help out.My email is: duxous@email.com
Email me off list.
Hope to hear from you as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance,
Kimmo

I'm wondering if any experienced users of the Nakamichi cm-300 mic's, or of
the teac me-120, or tascam pe-120 mics could shed some light...
These mics use the cylindrical 9v battery. I've successfully sent phantom
power to them as well, and this works. I'm wondering if this will still
drain the battery, or if it will just be acting as a pass through for the
phantom current.
has anyone tried this?
It could save alot of batteries if it indeed does not drain it.
I saw a Nak mx-100 "mixer" and a ps-100 power supply unit recently...and i'm
wondering if the power supply actually supplied power to the mics, in
addition to the mixer...does anyone have one of these and know?
Information seems to be really hard to come by on the internet, probably
because these were discontinued ~15 years ago. They sound great though, I
am pretty impressed with their performance.
In exchange for this outreach for info, i'll offer up a BWT.
BWT:
first person to respond, i'll B&P Keller/Flecktones from Boston Fleet
Pavilion, last August. Neumann km140 source.
thanks all!

in light of kellers no sbds I will be taping with mics for the first time on
monday. someone is bringing some 4011's or 4022's (he doesn't know which)
and a d3. well I have a dap1. I know the preamp and a/d is not great in the
p1 but it's all we got. I'm assuming I can go from the mic xlr straight into
the p1. what setting on the analog input should I use (20db,mic,line). will
one eco charge be enough for the mics and deck? should I change the eco at
set break (I have two). should levels be set the same as if I were coming
out of the board? sorry guys for all the questions but I'd like to have some
idea of what the fuck I'm doing before monday night.

You have to use one of the "mic" settings to get phantom power (which
the B&K's need). Since they're very high output, I'd use the padded
setting (-20dB).
It shouldn't hurt to fully charge the battery and change at set break;
how long does it last now for recording (albeit without phantom
power)? Level setting depends on how loud the show is; forget about
what the board might do.
