What is the quality of the AD converters in a Sony D8?
Is it worth it to use one of the portable AD converters on the market as a
front end to my D8?
My source inputs are usually from the analog, line-out jacks of other
consumer audio equipment. I have not yet gotten into live DAT recording.
Thanks,
Earl

Decent.

You have to decide that for yourself.

My guess is, probably not; you might borrow an AD converter and try a
comparison.

Subject: FS: Sonosax SX-M2 mic pre
Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 01:42:22 -0500
Hello all,
I'm selling my Sonosax SX-M2 mic pre. Bought new for $1250 in 1996, its
been (gently) used ... 150? times, and in perfect condition functionally
and cosmetically.
Functionality: 2 channel w/switchable 48V phantom power, gain 0db, 6-40
and 20-76 (two ranges) independently adjustable for each channel, low
battery and clip indicator. Balanced XLR in, Balanced XLR as well as
unbalanced 1/8" out. Runs on 2 9V batteries, or 12-24V DC @ 80ma.
Approx 3.25" x 5.75" x 1.6" high.
For detailed specs: Sonosax is at http://www.sonosax.ch/
Comes with foam mini-"suitcase", original manual, a hard-to-find power
plug to make a DC in power source, and (if you want it) a 6V to 15V
DC/DC converter power source I made.
I've made many great recordings with this between my B&K 4021 mics and
Sony SBM-1 A/D. Its the same size as the SBM-1 (and the D8), so you can
"stack" all three together for compact high-quality recordings.
Reason for selling: hardly tape anymore, and have credit card debt... :(
I'd like to get $750 for it. Will consider all offers.
Thank you,
Jesse Lackey

Hi All,
Upgraded a while back and so it's time to finally sell my Neumanns. They're
in pristine condition and come with some DPA & Shure windscreens and (1)
AT8410a shockmount. If you're looking to upgrade to a high quality and low
cost mic here's a great opportunity.

The nomad is not for everyone, put it that way.
I have been using it for a few months, feeding it an optical line from a
CO2 s/pdif format converter. I've not done bit accuracy tests with it.
From the very extensive testing that Jamie Lutch has done, I see no
need. It is "sometimes" bit perfect, and other times it drops samples.
These dropped samples can be absolutely impossible to detect by ear or
they can be a pop, click or drop out. In my experience, I have seen one
dropout occur in one recording I have made (it was about 1:40 into a two
hour recording).
This is one issue out of probably 15 outings with it, though this was
with an earlier revision of the nomad firmware.
This lack of consistence is all that some folks need to say "junk".
For me, it is an acceptable trade off to get rid of DAT with its
expensive tapes, head cleaning, mechanical failure, misloads,
bit-perfect sound cards, transfer times, resample.etc.
I've also used it for line-in recording with a pair of CoreSound HEB
mics. Excellent results (though none of the switchcraft mini-jacks that
are used by CoreSound would fit properly in the universal
mic/line/optical jack of the nomad).
All said and done, *I* give it a thumbs up. It works well for my tastes
and will continue to be my main 16bit recorder.

It's interesting that Jamie has also tested several CO2's including 2 of
mine, and has found that they are not reliably bit-accurate. I don't
recall if he has tested the JB3 independent of the CO2, but it wouldn't be
surprising if results obtained with the CO2 are different than results
obtained with the optical output of the SBM-1, as reported by Michael
Frasca.

I'd like to make a somber announcement.
I just found out last night that a fellow Dat head, Matty Pickett,
went to the Great White show in West Warwick RI last week and didn't make it
out.
I have been trading with Matty for 10+ years and talked to him on the phone
a lot, although I never met him in person. He was a huge music fan and had
an extensive collection of hard rock, especially Deep Purple and related
bands. He taped a TON of shows over the years. I just received an Ian Moore
dat last week from him and have a package ready to mail to him right now.
It seems pretty surreal to find that he died in the blaze.
It really opened my eyes because...... lord knows the small packed clubs I
have been in over the years where something could have happened. But for
the grace of god that could have been me or any of us for that matter.
Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know we lost a fellow dathead. He was a
good guy and will be missed. I'm going to put on that Ian moore dat and
raise a glass to him.
Thanks for the bandwidth.

Hello everyone -
I am sorry for the extremely personal nature of this posting, but I feel =
that the DAT-Heads mailing list is the only way that I will be able to =
find everyone and speak to everyone. I am sure by now you have all =
heard of the horrible tragedy at The Station in Warwick, RI. =
Unfortunately, it is with pain that I am writing to let everyone know =
that this horrible incident claimed the lives of one our best friends, =
Matt Pickett. He taped about 500 shows from 1993-2003. =20
I met Matt back in 1997 through music, concerts, and tape trading. He =
sent me his tape list and immediately I knew that we had the same =
interests - we had been to the same concerts in the same venues for =
years. Matt & I became instant friends. Recording and trading live =
music was his passion. From this we developed a strong friendship. We =
drove all over the east coast together. Matt helped me through more =
difficult times than I can remember - breakups, job trouble, =
confrontations, anything. Matt was a kind ear, and he had advice and =
experience in all situations. He was everything I was not - he was =
people-person and knew how to deal with everything. This is what drew =
everyone around him to him. Through Matt I met even more wonderful =
people.
I am just writing so that I can let everyone know this unfortunate news. =
I don't know the details of which ones of you he traded with and =
chatted with, but chances are if you have some rock shows from the New =
England area, they came from him. I offer up my e-mail: bhoy@eaw.com if =
anyone would like further information. I am hoping some of you can =
share your experiences with Matt to me via private email. 2003 was to =
be Matt's biggest year. He had himself a house, and was set to be =
married. If you would like, I will compile any emails and present them =
to his fiancee. She will appreciate the smallest of messages from =
anyone who knew him.
Thanks - and again I apologize for the very personal nature of this =
message. If I had lists of people, I would share this information =
personally. I just don't know how to find all the people Matt knew =
around the world. I am hoping some of them still read DAT-Heads and I =
can find them that way. Matt was big into UFO and the Scorpions. If =
people in these circles outside of DAT-Heads can be contacted please =
alert me; pass along my email.
Please be careful when you guys go out and tape these days. We find =
ourselves in the most awful of venues and before we never used to expect =
anything bad to happen to us.
Sincerely,=20

hi, i was wondering if anyone has a consensus on which tape is better :)
ive always been extremely loyal to the sony DGP's and never had a problem
with them, until recently, since they changed they tape housing etc, and
have been plagued with mis-loads and such. so im trying to find a new
brand. i just got a box of the Quantegy R-124's, but the DDS tapes are
_supposed_ to have more stingent manufacturing guidelines, so im wondering
if the Ampex DDS tapes are better than the Quantegy.
