I'll pay for concert ticket, blanks and beverages. Or I can trade (have lots low gen for trade, different artists. I can do DVD-Rs too, for example Peter Gabriel 2002 shows, Bruce Springsteen, etc). I have all the parts to mod the front end of the nomad to accept coax in , but havent gotten around to that yet. Not that I have hopes that that is gonna solve the woes of the unit, but rather, i'm bored and out of geek projects, so thats next.... I'm pretty convinced the problems lie in the buffering to/from disk. I get similar glitches on playback occasionally. I have the sound card mentioned above. In 98 all was fine, but now I get pops on everything I try to put to the HD. I have been converting some DATs over and am now stuck with this problem. All the hardware is setup just the same as w/98. Any ideas as to what is going on inside to cause this??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Models may vary by store and I do NOT recommend the AD-1200 or AD-1600. The main feature I like in the 1500 is the ability to play "CD-DVD" discs, ie, 4X speed SVCDs offering full DVD quality for 20 minutes. Since I am virtually the only person recording discs in this format, not sure how useful this is to the rest of you, but just wanted to let people know. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Tom Reizes" Subject: re: nomad, thumbs up or down? Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 01:17:08 -0500 Nomad JB3 in general: Two BIG (novelty sized) THUMBS UP!!! You have heard most of the benefits, I won't restate them. But, the fact that it works as a portable hard drive for swapping data files is fantastic too! Not to mention traveling with a few hundred hours of FM-quality mp3s and still room for a week's worth of tour at 44.1kHz WAV. When travleing, leaving the valuable and weighty CD collection at home has been a sweet and unexpected benefit. The firmware updates have made all the difference in my experience with recording on the JB3. The level monitor is useful to confirm signal and for loose monitoring, better than nothing, certainly better than the readout on the D100s remote. Now Creative offers a firmware fix so two JB3s can communicate thru a 4pin to 4pin firewire cable (just got one on ebay for $4) w/o the need for a PC... dump the show in 3 mins after the show! No need for daisy chains of JB3s in the pit, just good recording on one and some fresh batts for the dump. Note: Dumping the audio seems power hungry and my unit prefers to be plugged in when dumping large wav files via USB, haven't had experience with a firewire dump as of yet. Digital Format Translation: I have had both good and bad luck with the CO2 as the optical front end for my JB3... 1) Best Case Scenario: I have used the CO2 to successfully drive both my JB3 and a D8 with no loss of info on either unit on two taper pit occassions... 2) Typical CO2 Scenario: I have also experienced (very rare = a fraction of a second every couple of hours of recording ) glitches which seem to be *bad* samples and NOT dropped samples (semantical, I know). Remove (smooth out,) the pop to the rest of the waveform and it sounds great, it's not like the HD stopped recording, and the pop or click is nothing compared to digi static, pops and clicks I have experienced using DT over the last 10 yrs. With the CO2 giving me a slightly better than 50% *success* (error free) rate, it drove me to look for another solution. After speaking to Len Moskowitz about the pricier DFT unit on his webstie. It seemed as though he didn't want to sell me one and only wanted to talk about the CO2 (which I feel is an undependable solution)... "Wot's, uh... the deal?" 3) Worst Case Scenario: On one occassion, I had a CO2 stage a mutiny on me for no goddamn good reason. I don't know what it is about the CO2, but there is something wrong there... SBM 1 as the front end: Since getting a 7pin to optical cable for use with my SBM1 I have had fantastic results! But of course the SBM1 can't accept a digital signal, so that is limiting. Going SBM1 for about 10 recordings now, I have not noticed any dropped samples on close scrutinization. This fact suggests to me that there must be a way to make an affordable and dependable, portable DFT solution. Line and Mic IN: I have used the mic in and line in with very satisfactory results, though I am not thrilled. But then again I was never thrilled going line in with my D7,8,100 or M1. I need to scrutinize the recordings I have made going line and mic in when the batts on my sbm died at a jam recently. A few things that i read in peoples comments about the JB3 that need to be cleared up... 1. Longest file possible is of course 3 hours long (maybe even 2:59:59?) it's the nature of *.wav format. However, I have been able to turnaround (save and re-start) a recordnig in seconds... much quickr than a tape swap on a sony portable. 2. My experience with the batt indicator on the JB3 is that it shows juice based on both batts and not just the primary batt, I could be wrong, but then that means that one of my batts doesn't work at all, and I am pretty proof positive that is not the case. re: batt life... I have gotten over 6 hours continuous record followed by 8+ hours of playback and still had juice! Not missing tape at all! Peace, Tom Reizes ------------------------------ From: David A Kochman Subject: RE: quantegy DAT vs Ampex DDS Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 22:49:07 -0800 I personally love both the audios and the DDS tapes. The housing for the Ampex DDS tapes is extrodinarily sturdy (a la the old KAO's), where as the housing for the Quantegy audio DAT's is a little bit weaker. Both are really smooth. If I use Maxell tapes with my DAT, when unpacking the tapes it just sounds strained. Not so with the Ampex tapes. Tension seems great, and I've let the Ampex tapes sit for 3 years without playing, and never had a problem with d/o's or any crap. I've not had problems with either, so a full hardy two thumbs up from me. I also have used the Quantegy 90m DDS tapes, and they work great too - they appear to be in the DG-90p Sony casing, so they might be the same... But I am running out of these great 60m Ampex DDS tapes, and I see Am-dig isn't selling them anymore. Anyone know where I can order more?
