From: David Sadowski <dsadowski@ameritech.net> Subject: Mac Audio Files on a PC Reply-To: dsadowski@ameritech.net Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 14:19:29 -0600 A well intentioned taper has sent me some files recently in hopes I can work on them with a wave editor on my PC. Unfortunately they are Mac files with an .aif extension. I can open them up in Cool Edit Pro, edit them, and save them as wave files. In the wave editor, the new files play perfectly. However, when I burn them to a CD, there seems to be some sort of unexpected quality loss happening. It reminds me of the sort of quality loss you get when listening to streaming audio on the Internet sometimes. My guess is that although I have saved the files as .wavs, there is still some sort of compression or file conversion involved when burning, and this is the source of the quality loss. Can anyone offer some pointers? Thanks.
From: "SteveM" <stevem@thenightowl.com> Subject: help needed - M1 problem Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 15:35:19 -0600 I've got a problem with my M1 & was hoping that someone here may be able to offer some suggestions on what to do about it. Over the last year or so, maybe a little longer, I've noticed that the deck occasionally (not all the time) doesn't like to rewind tapes, depending on how far into them I happen to be. If I'm past the halfway mark, it seems to be OK, but sometimes it has problems rewinding if I'm, say, 1/4 of the way into the tape. Again, not always. I'm not sure if it's isolated to 90M tapes or not. Possibly so. Last night, I went to see Eric Johnson. I went to unpack the tape (a new Sony DGP-90) - no problem. FF'd & rewound to the beginning. When I hit record to go forward for the first minute, I heard tape wrinkling inside the deck. I hit stop & tried to unload the tape - nothing happened, it kept "going thru the motions" for a minute or so, then turned itself off. Tried it again - nothing. At this point, the tape is stuck inside the deck. I tried removing the batteries (ie to do a 'cold boot') - no luck. All I got when I put them back in was a flashing TOP on the display. After 3 tries, I was able to get the tape to load (so I thought), I hit record, set the hold button, & went in the venue. Once I got inside, I got set up, checked levels, everything looked good, and proceeded to enjoy the show. I left the deck running till I got back to the car, checked the display & said that I had been recording for about 2:23:00 or so. I got home, got the tape out of the M1, put it in my DA-40. There was no absolute time reading on the tape at all, essentially a blank tape. A frustrating experience to say the least. Is there any possibility that the tape is still OK and that I did somehow manage to get a recording of the show? The deck is still within the 5 year warranty period (altho, there are only about 3 months left) and has never been serviced before. If it does need service (I'm thinking it may be the transport), any recommendations on where to send it? Any help with either/both of these issues will be greatly appreciated... Thanks! Steve
From: DannyThweatt@webtv.net (Danny Thweatt) Subject: Anyone get Eric Johnson 2-26? Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 16:17:35 -0600 (CST) Was in the process of getting a nice recording of Eric Johnson last night in St. Louis when an anti-taping nazi grabbed me, tried to break my gear, and made me stop taping. He kept saying "give me your videotape" as he clutched my 2" x 2" MD player. I have the first 66 minutes on MD and it sounds great, but security took my second MD. Did anyone get the whole show? Also, does anyone know if a venue has the right to seize your personal property; i.e. gear? Before we were let in they specifically mentioned no video taping, but nothing was said about audio. I didn't know that EJ was anti-taper. I guess I should have done some research. :) Have a nice day, Danny Check out Sanctified Press:christian rock,apologetics,poetry,ranting,etc... Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 23:12:10 -0500 anybody know what this switch is for? it is on shure 68 and 267 mixers. it is for the vu meter only. +10 setting causes the meter to increase signal strength. does not effect audio level i/o. is there a nominal/industry standard setting? thx
From: Todd Romero <todd@routeflap.net> Subject: Re: +4 and +10 for vu meter range on shure mixers? Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 03:22:33 -0500 (EST) u sure its not +4dB and -10dB ? those are the 2 standard line level inputs. +4dBu is what pro gear is rated at, and -10dBu for consumer gear. for example, the apogee ad-1000 has 2 line input settings, +4 and -10 supposed to be set depending on the line level thats feeding it. From: Todd Romero <todd@routeflap.net> Subject: Re: help needed - M1 problem Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 03:47:12 -0500 (EST) first of all, you shouldnt be using 90m tapes in an M1/D100. the manual even specifically advises against it and says there could be problems. the second issue is with the newer Sony DGP tapes. i think they say DDS-2 in them now? (were DDS-1) they suck and have loading problems. the _exact_ thing happened to me as you described below. (cept i was using a 60m) took forever to load, then every time i tried to start the tape, it would flash unload then top, then load etc. finally it started to record and looked fine. but when i tried to playback.. nothing. thats just one issue ive had with the new sony dgp's. needless to say ive quickly changed brands. your deck is fine. From: support <support@preciseaudio.com> Subject: Nomad Reply-To: support <support@preciseaudio.com> Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 09:00:14 -0300 Hi! It's been some time, probably more than a year, that I have been following and looking for comments on the Nomad as a reliable tool for field work. The application I would like to implement using it is location audio for film & TV. As some of you probably know, we come from 1/4" tape as our first industry standard, later changed to DAT. Present times are something of a nowhere land, as DAT machines options are diminishing (particularly SMPTE sync capable) and no universal media has yet been established. MD is an excellent option too, even if it does not support SMPTE. But it keeps sync for a long time, it's cheap (do prefer consumer types to those made by HHB and Marantz), disc prizes are incredibly low and now can be found everywhere, and it's great for dialogue. A great tool for backup and even first unit on very low budget projects. Above units have become professional standards, because you can trust them. Lost samples or producing a pop or click it's absolutely unacceptable for our kind of work, so I don't yet see a Nomad as a reliable pro tool. Newer firmwares come often, but I don't know why they can't cure that reliability problem. Carlos E. From: Ian Beeby <ipb@networkl.demon.co.uk> Subject: Digital audio device recommendations please... Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 12:19:29 +0000 Gentlefolk, I have a Sony D7 DAT recorder with which I have been very pleased over the past eight years. Remarkably, based on some of the submissions I have read here, it is still functioning more or less perfectly. I am now looking to do more with digital audio - specifically I am now interested in getting audio that I have recorded on my DAT recorder into shape to use as sound track material for DV movies. This may also mean mixing in with microphone sources and even royalty-free music sources. It may also require sample-rate conversion. The application is purely non-commercial. I have a Mac PowerBook G4 computer running OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). My questions are this: 1/ Have any of you good people had any experience or heard comments about the following digital audio devices: a) Yamaha UW500 USB Audio/MIDI interface b) Tascam US224 USB Control Surface and 24-bit audio interface c) emagic EMI 6=A62m USB Multichannel Audio Interface 2/ Have you any recommendations for suitable audio software (to allow mixing and, ideally, sample-rate conversion (at least between 44.1 and 48 K at 16-bit))? I am only interested in Stereo at this stage. 3/ Have you any better suggestions for input/output devices? My basic criterion would be that it should be able to input and output in half-speed DAT (32KHz at 12-bit), 44.1KHz at 16-bit and 48KHz at 16-bit as a minimum. The web site where I found the Tascam device refers to a package called Cakewalk - is this a high-end pro package? I think that what I am looking for is a high-end consumer or low-end pro package - ideally not costing much. Since I am looking only at stereo and 16-bit I presume (foolishly?) that I should be able to manage with an LE version of a good package. Your comments and sound advice would be much appreciated. Best Regards Ian Beeby --=20 Ian Beeby
