Subject: Core Sund's portable-I'm impressed
Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2003 07:37:32 -0800
I wanted to say just looking at Len's new Core sound portable recorder,
I am impressed. The feature I'm really impressed with is the fact that
this unit is able to stor data in .wav format. In reviewing many
digital studio pieces, let alone protables, it's hard to find a recorder
that clearly, up front states that the data is saved in.wav format.
Obviusly the recording ont memory stick has advantges, such as n moving
parts. One future dream configuration woould be to have a recording
unit that hold either a physically linked recording bay or a SPDIF
connecte bay that woould hold multipls, lets say 4 2 gb memory cards,
that woould sense when the last 15 secnds or so of recording on each
card was being reached, then duplicate the last 15 secnds on the first
card ending, and the next card beginning, so entire concerts coould be
recroded and provide seamlessly spliced sections. That would be an
interesting, and highly useful upgaade to a splendid recording device.
I applaud the coding system used, and technology going into the creatin
of such a device from the start. Using WAV format instead of Mackie, or
any other manufacturers proprietary coding system ia in my eyes, a
clearly huge benefit. Hpefully in real world use this unist will not
have dropped sample and other problems that have plaged ter devices.

OK, I'll try to make this as understandable as possible.
1. Do your capsules have to be in the same place, meaning that one has to
be directly above the other?
2. Or....Can you still record X-Y with the mics level but with the caps
almost touching in a 90 degree angle?
I'm going to be taping DSO this Friday @ The Crystal Ballroom here in
Portland and trying a 3 Nak mix. 2 cp1 cards in a X-Y position & a 3rd cp1
pointing straight ahead. Might seem like overkill but I don't have the
shotguns & it's also an experiment with running 3 mics. Any suggestions
or answers to the X-Y answer are appreciated. Thanks, Chris

hey now,
i have 2 ad1000's that i am looking to sell. both have wooden boxes,
breakout cables, batteries, and chargers.
one battery set includes 12v eco charge (2) and chargers
the other battery set has 2 powersonic batteries and charges (for specific
amp/hrs. please write)
one ad1000 has never had any problems, and has not needed to be serviced.
the other has had a new word clock, and recently a new digital circuit
board, and has received a 1 year warranty from apogee, and a clean bill of
health.
the only reasons i'm selling these is to get smaller (stealthy). i don't
intend to be in a section much, where one has the luxury for large batteries
and bags.
i'd consider a cash + trade or out right trade for either an HHB PDR1000
deck or maybe a sony bit muncher.
any and all inquires welcome. no asking price to start.
going where the climate suits my clothes,

Uh-h-h-h-m-mmm . . . The V2 _doesn't do A>D, so all you're really doing here
is risking an expensive mic pre by using it as a cable adapter and
attenuating input
levels to the deck. The V2 will accept a very hot input signal, but if you
were to
"accidentally" plug into a true +4 or +10 SBD output you could easily let
the magic
smoke out of your microphone preamp. =|
A better solution would be to use some in-line attenuators and wire up an
adapter
cable from XLR > 1/8" mini to match input levels and impedances for your
deck.
Much cheaper than a new V2, and a lot more portable...

I 've seen sources like this:
SBD > Lunatec V2 > DAT
SBD > preamp > DAT
How come people are doing this? What are the advantages or disadvantages?
===================================================================
i've done it simply just to get the XLR inputs to patch in a D7/D8.....
or to get better A/D conversion from something like a V2 over the internal
A/D on the Sony
the disadvantage is always that it's another device to deal with - but more
often than not you'll want to use something inbetween the SBD and a plain
old DAT, esp a D7/D8......

Kansas City Taper, March 15th NEEDED "Ragtime Festival" The Wilders
Oldtime/Bluegrass/Country
I will compensate a taper for ticket(s) to record this excellent band, The
Wilders at the following KC engagement:
Make plans now to attend our concert for Kansas City Ragtime Revelry,
MARCH 15, 7:30 pm, at Community Christian Church.
We will share the bill with David Thomas Roberts, a ragtime pianist.
We plan to do a little sharing of the spotlight with him too, and
you'll just have to come find out what that means!
Those of you in Kansas City know that we rarely have an opportunity
to perform for the home crowd.
You can wait to buy tickets at the door, but you might want to order
them ahead of time, in case it's SOLD OUT!! So, here's how you can
do that:
Call: 816-691-8781 / write: dianecapps@juno.com
Or you can order them by mail (write checks to KCRR):
Kansas City Ragtime Revelry
3535 Genessee
Kansas City, MO 64111-3941
Tickets are $15 ($10 for students)
Or, you can get tickets in person at Mountain Music Shoppe, on
Johnson Drive in Shawnee, KS (913-962-9711 for directions).
Venue information:
Community Christian Church
4601 Main Street (free covered, lighted parking just south of the
church)
KC MO
("the Frank Lloyd Wright church")
If you can record this show for me--they are taper friendly if you let me
set it up beforehand--I'll pay your way in, etc.
Please drop me a line,

I was looking to buy a reel to reel deck to have the capability to do
Reel to digital transfers. I went overboard. I bought a 4 channel 10.5
inch reel, 7.5 and 15 IPS Tascam 34B. This is more like a 4 channel
mastering deck with 1/4" tape. The deck is being shipped from
Sacramento to Long Beach now. This deck has a retail price in excess of
$3000 and is suppsed to be in great shape. I guess my eyes were bigger
than my common sense. If anyone has a burning desire to get a deck of
this quality, I would be happy to breakeven, and buy a deck that more
appropriately meets my needs, and doesn't break me as badly, $325 plus
shipping, which is dirt cheap for a deck like this. I sell some stuff
to pay the bills, then buy something like this on impulse.....

Ideally, they're in the exact same place. Unfortunately, that isn't
possible.
If you're going to mix to mono (e.g. for a vinyl record or FM), one
above the other is better, for timing reasons. Otherwise, one next to
the other is just about as good.

Use manual level, use the LINE INPUT, and set the level to "10".
For louder bands or closer to the speakers, I set the level to "7".
You probably won't get full volume from the balcony, but with DAT it
doesn't matter - and most importantly - you do NOT have to keep
checking the levels while you're rolling. This is a MUST to get
away with a King Crimson tape. In fact, I wouldn't recommend
looking at the levels even once, just trust this method.
Use 44.1K. KC could play close to 2 hours, so you can't start the
tape too early. But for longer shows, I recommend 90meter - 3
hour dat tapes.
Also, practice starting the recorder before going to the show.
You should have it in "hold" for the trip.
When you're ready to record, take it out of hold and count to 5 or
10 for it to load the tape (I count to 5 on the D8 but the M1 is
slower). If you hit "record" while it's still loading, this can jam the
tape.
After the count of 10, there are several ways to get it into record
mode. Here's one that doesn't require pressing two buttons at the
same time: (this works for all Sony portable decks):
Push Record, then Pause, then Pause.
The easiest way to tell it is recording, if you can see the display, is
you will see the "index" light flashing for the first 10 seconds. If
you see this flashing, you know for sure you are recording. There
is no need to look at any other indicator.
Also, don't forget that Alkaline batteries don't last very long in an
M1 or D100. Use the rechargable batteries that come with it
(NiMh), or Nicads for short shows, or Eveready Lithium AA's for
long shows (up to 7 hours).
