You don't necessarily need to carry that much flash media. As long as you
have two of reasonable size, you can offload them to a portable drive
unit. Many vendors make "digital wallets" that are designed to transfer
data from a compact flash card to a hard drive within the unit. You can
then use USB or firewire (depending on the model) to transfer this back to
a PC. I want to say they start around $200 and go up from there, with the
sweet spot around $500 for 40GB of storage.
My biggest question will be to see if it works with my older iPaq. The
older iPaq has a slower processor, so there might be problems. I haven't
seen anything on the site as to acceptable platforms.

looks like I might have one of my toshibas up for sale.
toshiba 3440ct
field proven excellent with the vx pocket (can run 2 vx pockets
simultaneously) and also tested to record flawlessly with the minime
via usb. have many good recordings to back this up.runs 6-7 hours on
stock batteries, can run indefinitely as you can swap out the two batteries
independent of each other. one of the most versatile and economical
ways to get into a stable laptop package (1/2 the cost of a vaio, and
is faster, with a bigger screen without the wierd aspect ratio.) Those
of you who have seen this running in the field know how compact and robust
it is.
serious inquiries only!
(no, i'm not getting out of laptop taping, just have an extra one of
these)
thanks,

Subject: 2nd Call: Monte Montgomery "Acoustic Whirlwind" Tree
Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2003 13:47:01 -0500
It's been a few days and the registrations are really starting to add up,
but just in case some of you missed the original message, here's a
refresher. I'll post one final call on Sunday; to those who've seen this
message before, thank you for your patience:
http://www.neil-rocks.de/mm.html
"Best Undiscovered Guitarist in America" -Guitar One Magazine, Feb 2000
This is for a Monte Montgomery compilation I put together entitled “Acoustic
Whirlwind.” It consists of half original material and half covers, with a
slight edge to Monte originals. All sources are clear soundboards recorded
from shows performed in Texas between 1999 and 2002, aside from "Wreck of
the Edmund Fitzgerald" and about a minute of chatter with the audience which
is sourced from an excellent audience recording. It’s spread out over
three 80-minute discs to give you four hours of music.
Monte is the kind of artist you simply must hear (and preferably see live)
to believe – he can play anything from mellow Cat Stevens and James Taylor
to well-arranged pop such as Lindsey Buckingham’s Fleetwood Mac to full-bore
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix classics, and he does it *all* on an
amplified Alvarez Yairi acoustic guitar. Monte's original songwriting is
also extremely well-crafted and arranged; and I'll bet his originals are
what stick in your head longer than many of the covers.
I promise you will have not heard anything like this man before, and it’s a
crime that not more people know about him. He’s rated as the number one
undiscovered guitarist in America by Guitar One Magazine, has appeared on
Austin City Limits and Texas Music Café, opened for Bob Dylan (and got raver
reviews), and played with Sonny Landreth, Malford Milligan, and Charlie
Daniels among many others. Another attractive quality about Monte and his
band is how humble and down-to-earth they are; they’ve all got a great sense
of humor and a real appreciation for their fans.
If you think three discs is too much to invest in someone you’ve never heard
before, check out the mp3 clip I put together on the tree sign-up page for a
three-minute taste of what you can hear on the set.
You can get all the information, the mp3 clip, full setlist, performance
credits, artwork, and the registration page at the following URL:
http://www.neil-rocks.de/mm.html
Both an audio CD version and SHN version are available. The deadline to
sign up is Monday, March 10, at 12:00 pm noon eastern time.
Special thanks to Jack Rogers for his excellent artwork (and Bryan Erickson
for the use of his cover photo), Frank Babing for administering the tree,
David Sell for his encouragement and input, all of the recording sources,
and above all to Monte and the band members for delivering such incredible
music in the past and continuing on their journey to inevitable success
today.
I’ll be bold enough to say that this may be some of the best music you hear
this year. You will not be disappointed! If you have any artist-specific
questions, please feel free to email me. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to test to see if an optical digital out is working? I
just got a deck that has it, and it worked initially (fed into a sound card
deck) but now I get nothing. I had some driver troubles with the soundcard,
but finally got it upgraded. Now it seems to be functioning properly, but I
still get no response from the optical signal input.
What I am wondering, is can a visual test be done to see the red light
blinking when audio data is being passed. To me, it looks like a solid
light, which might indicate it is a deck output problem. Just wondering if
a visual can be done, or is it too fast to see? Anyone know? Any other
suggestions? I have wasted a lot of time on this problem.
Thanks,
Dave
