Not a one-piece solution, but here's an add-on one for the 2.5" drives:
http://www.addonics.com/products/external_hdd/pocket_exdrive.asp
I'm expecting something similar for the 1.8" drives.
Lexar just announced a 4 GB CF memory card. Prices on 1 GB cards on
eBay lately are down to around $200; expect the same for 4 GB cards in
roughly a year. Expect an announcement for an 8 GB CF card by around
the Fall.
The Toshiba (also sold by Kingston and CMS) 5 GB PC Card drives are
selling for around $150 on eBay.

We'll be releasing more information about PDAudio system configurations

Subject: Lights for checking levels while stealthing
Date: Sun, 9 Mar 2003 13:46:25 -0500
I've been lucky enough so far at not getting caught while checking levels
during stealth recording with my D-8 or M-1. However, I'm still looking at
finding a better way and would like to hear ideas from others.
I previously used to use the lights installed on the DAT recorders which
worked ok because if the security goons saw the light they probably thought
I was checking my cell phone. However, the M-1 burns through batteries fast
if you use the light.
I currently use a small keychain-mounted red light that is activated by
squeezing the device. The red light doesn't attract alot of attention but
it does look more suspicious when I open my fanny pack (where recorder is
stashed) and shine the light inside.
Here is what I'm hoping to move on to for some shows:
You know those little glowing lights that they sell at some concerts that
are shaped like tampons?? The emit light continuously but I think they
would be perfect for periodically checking levels without drawing any
suspicion.
Does anyone know where you can get these lights in advance of a concert?
Thanks,
Charlie

Saw this item in the store last week. Have not tested it.
Sure beats spending $100 for the Fostex converter!
One thing I use a converter for is sending digital signals across the
room from my satellite receivers to my DAT pile. Yes, you can buy
a 20' optical cable but they are expensive, so I convert the
satellite's optical output to coaxial, and use a regular RCA cable for
the rest of the trip.

Subject: something fishy here
Date: Sun, 09 Mar 2003 19:10:23 -0800
So I'm looking around the web tonight to match some dates to some shows and
I stumble upon this website:
http://echosiberia.com/
I didn't get there through the main page...I was looking for the date of the
Doug Martsch show he did at the Tractor Tavern last March. Next thing you
know I find these guys have a whole list of stuff they're selling. A LOT of
Seattle bands but a few major label guys too.
http://echosiberia.com/catalog.html
These guys claim that they are doing this non-profit and that they attempt
to get artist permission "when possible". (I doubt that Bob Dylan would want
these guys selling one of his shows) That sounds fishy to me. If anyone here
sees a band listed, and you know the band or it's management
personally...I'm curious to find out if these guys have asked ANY of the
bands they have for sale. If someone knows otherwise...please enlighten me.
It just sounds like another leech website trying to make $ off of others
work. *maybe YOU taped one of the shows for sale*

Subject: Last Call: Monte Montgomery Tree
Date: Sun, 09 Mar 2003 23:29:49 -0500
Special thanks to those of you who've seen this all three times; I greatly
appreciate your patience. This is the final call for registrations for this
tree - don't miss the boat!
http://www.neil-rocks.de/mm.html
"Best Undiscovered Guitarist in America" -Guitar One Magazine, Feb 2000
This is for a Monte Montgomery compilation I put together entitled “Acoustic
Whirlwind.” It consists of half original material and half covers, with a
slight edge to Monte originals. All sources are clear soundboards recorded
from shows performed in Texas between 1999 and 2002, aside from "Wreck of
the Edmund Fitzgerald" and about a minute of chatter with the audience which
is sourced from an excellent audience recording. It’s spread out over
three 80-minute discs to give you four hours of music.
Monte is the kind of artist you simply must hear (and preferably see live)
to believe – he can play anything from mellow Cat Stevens and James Taylor
to well-arranged pop such as Lindsey Buckingham’s Fleetwood Mac to full-bore
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix classics, and he does it *all* on an
amplified Alvarez Yairi acoustic guitar. Monte's original songwriting is
also extremely well-crafted and arranged; and I'll bet his originals are
what stick in your head longer than many of the covers.
I promise you will have not heard anything like this man before, and it’s a
crime that not more people know about him. He’s rated as the number one
undiscovered guitarist in America by Guitar One Magazine, has appeared on
Austin City Limits and Texas Music Café, opened for Bob Dylan (and got raver
reviews), and played with Sonny Landreth, Malford Milligan, and Charlie
Daniels among many others. Another attractive quality about Monte and his
band is how humble and down-to-earth they are; they’ve all got a great sense
of humor and a real appreciation for their fans.
If you think three discs is too much to invest in someone you’ve never heard
before, check out the mp3 clip I put together on the tree sign-up page for a
three-minute taste of what you can hear on the set.
You can get all the information, the mp3 clip, full setlist, performance
credits, artwork, and the registration page at the following URL:
http://www.neil-rocks.de/mm.html
Both an audio CD version and SHN version are available. The deadline to
sign up is Monday, March 10, at 12:00 pm noon eastern time.
Special thanks to Jack Rogers for his excellent artwork (and Bryan Erickson
for the use of his cover photo), Frank Babing for administering the tree,
David Sell for his encouragement and input, all of the recording sources,
and above all to Monte and the band members for delivering such incredible
music in the past and continuing on their journey to inevitable success
today.
I’ll be bold enough to say that this may be some of the best music you hear
this year. You will not be disappointed! If you have any artist-specific
questions, please feel free to email me. Thanks!

Considering the frequency it blinks at (in the megabits/second), I'd
be very impressed by anybody who could see that.
