From: Jim Jasmin <jjconslt@hypersurf.com> Subject: Need Someone to Record "Mountain Stage" FM -> DAT For Me Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 22:32:29 -0700 Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon will be appearing on Mountain Stage during the week starting 3/21. KALW here in San Francisco no longer carries MS, and I would like to get a recording of that week's broadcast. If you get good reception, have a decent FM tuner and DAT rig, I would appreciate getting a digital recording of that show. As a favor, I will make you a copy of my Leo Kottke "Mountain Stage Collection" ('92, '94, '95, '00) on 3 CDs. Thanks, Jim

From: jlutch@altairinc.com Subject: Re: coax>optical converter Reply-to: jlutch@altairinc.com Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 22:17:33 -0800 this is the infamous 'greybox' that I've used in a lot of my nomad testing. It is an oem device, can be found at frys for as little as $17, also sold by sound professionals and am-dig. some points: 1)worked more reliably with the nomad than the co2 or co3 2)requires in excess of 6V, if you try to run it on 6v, it will die right around 6V-ish. uses a 7508 (or 7505? cant remember) for power regulation, can be driven with at least up to 13V safely. consumes very little power, 40-80 mA or so 3)v3>greybox>nomad did not work AT ALL, tho it worked with a c02 4) after picking apart the circuit, it is your standard coax>ttl>optical convertor, with the ttl thru a 7404 hex inverter. what is odd is that it goes thru the inverter 3 times (usually it is an even number), causing the signal to invert (I think). might be why the v3>greybox>nomad setup trips out Highly reccommended for home use, prob one of the better field units out there, if modded to a locking connector -Jamie >> Saw this item in the store last week. Have not tested it. >> Sure beats spending $100 for the Fostex converter!
From: "Bill J" <johnwil1@hotmail.com> Subject: Indigo Girls + b&p + B.T.S. help Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 22:39:32 -0800 The Indigo Girls are supposedly going to perform a 45 min acoustic set at my University. To be completely honest...I'm not a fan of theirs. If there is someone out there who is a huge fan and wants me to tape them...let me know. Here's the catch: maybe no one will respond to this BUT> if I do get more than 4 seperate requests I might designate one person to send a DAT clone to and have them distribute it. So I have to own up to the fact that I promised a b&p on 1/14 and never came through. Time to own up: overdue bwt: The White Stripes 6/8/02 @ The Moore Theatre - Core Sound Cardioids>Battery Box/Bass roll off filter(flat response)>20 dB attenuator>mic in Sony M1 @ 48k 1 cdr* OR 1 DAT (this show was transfered to cdr by a friend/fellow taper who works at a studio in Seattle. He used Protools to dink with it. I don't know exactly what but it doesn't sound completely different than my DAT master. it's good) or Sigur Ros 11/26/02 @ The Moore Theatre - Core Sound Cardioids>Battery Box/Bass roll off filter(flat response)>20 dB attenuator>mic in Sony M1 @ 48k 2 cdrs*(same deal as above) or 1 DAT As I have finals next week...please allow me to go a little slower than normal...I will get requests done in a "reasonable timeframe". Spring break is 3/21-3/31. and now for some groveling... I have 2 Built to Spill shows on cdr that I'd love to get DAT clones of. If you know the taper/are the taper...please try to help me out. The info is: 9/25-26/01 The Variety Playhouse Atlanta GA (rough source info: AKG C414 B-TL II microphones, an Oade Brothers M2487 preamp and a Sony M1) _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

From: rappard@dds.nl Subject: calexico, flaming lips Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 10:00:02 +0100 (CET) sorry for the crosspost, but i don't think many people are on both the datheads and calexico lists. i'll be taping calexico in utrecht april 2nd, and might tape the april 7th in amsterdam as well. both GS > JVC XM-R70, which i took for their first test drive (as my OKMII and Sony MZ-R35 are both kaputt) last night at the flaming lips - great show, reasonable recording. GS mics have a reputation of being a bit bassy, which was proven - nothing that a minor bass cut in cool edit won't cure. the automatically adjusting record levels on the JVC are nice and handy, though. martin http://www.rappard.dds.nl http://www.downtothewell.com

From: "Ragan Todd" <rhinelander2130@hotmail.com> Subject: Still ISO Buffalo, NY taper Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 17:09:16 +0000 Had someone back out due to work commitments, so I'm still looking for someone to tape Adelaide at the Showplace Theater this Friday night in Buffalo. The band is a great modern rock band and they put on an amazing live show. They are taper-friendly and would love someone to tape the gig. I'll cover your expenses if you can provide a clone of the show (or even a CDR!), and I can provide you with a contact name of someone in the band. From: "Robert Gervais" <bgervais@texas-city-tx.org> Subject: Recommend audio card for Computer Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 10:19:12 -0600 I am thinking about making the jump from doing my DAT to CDR burns on pro equipment and instead using computer based editing. I was considering the Audigy2 Platinum card. Can anyone give me feed back on this card and its capabilities in transferring DAT signal to computer for easy editing and CD burning? In particular, does it have the re-sampling problem? It is a rather expensive card, but I like the controls and inputs on the front of the computer, rather than having to hook it up in the back of the computer every time I want to use it... Any helpful info would be appreciated. Comments can be posted here for all to enjoy, or feel free to give any personal comments to: bgervais@texas-city-tx.org. thanks for the help Bobby Gervais
From: "Steve Smith" <whoisstevekimock@hotmail.com> Subject: Nomad > USB Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 15:58:03 -0500 The Nomad can only record through optical in or line in. The USB connex (as well as the firewire cx) is only for I/O of existing files. I just used the JB3 on Kimock tour for four flawless, glitch-free shows.... ************************ From: "Ryan Boone" <ryan_boone@hotmail.com> Subject: Nomad JB3 record via USB Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2003 00:25:40 -0600 I haven't seen this discussed yet, but I noticed that some A/D converters (such as MAudio Duo and Apogee mini-me) now have a USB 1.1 outputs on them, anyone tried using this to record to a nomad Jukebox 3??
