Dang it indeed. I think it's just not there. Sometimes the D7 will
do that, and occasionally the D8. It's agonizing, but there is a
solution (for next time) when you want to record something important
(what else?) run a few seconds of signal to tape, then rewind and
play it back. once it's playing it back, go to pause, then record
and play together to go into record mode. After it's played the test
signal back, it will be in the right "groove" to record until it goes
into standby.
So it's good news and bad news, as usual, the yin with the yang-
Your tape is blank, but now you know how to prevent that. "Oh joy!"
I hear you say, "A lesson, when all I wanted was a nice tape."

was the best place to turn. I taped Jump, Little Children in Chattanooga
last week. Two shows. Late show came out great, but I checked my tape from
the early show today and it appears to be blank. Tape was running through
the show, I had levels, everything seemed fine and dandy. Rewound it, put
it away, that was that. Tried to listen today and no dice. Tape runs,
doesn't read as blank, but I don't hear any audio. Any ideas? I'd love to
be able to recover this if it is on there at all, as it was really a
wonderful set. Dang it.
FYI, I was taping with mic's into a D7 through the line in jack. I've taped
twice since then with the same setup and those tapes were fine. Help? If
this is covered elsewhere feel free to point me in that direction. Thanks!

I've been using Felt Tip Sound Studio (http://www.felttip.com) for
the last several years. It's pretty inexpensive shareware and takes
about 20 minutes to get the hang of. It also has a pretty generous
trial approach. I've been using paid copies for years, but if memory
serves, it gives you something like 30 editing sessions of arbitrary
length.
It has a variety of filters and other features. I use very little of
them and do precisely what you described. Record (you can set
automatic starting/stopping based on signal, time or data) and edit
(set markers and then split file by markers). The only other
features I use regularly are normalize (easy way to boost entire show
to highest possible level withouth clipping) and Amplify Volume (for
boosting talk and decreasing applause).
I've never used it in OS 10, though it lists support. Probably even
works better there.

FWIW, this was done with a Sony 60m DGP tape. I've been told they've been a
little dangerous to use lately. Eh? Just another contributing factor,
perhaps...

I bought the series of 9 shows initially, and enjoyed the ones I
listened to so much that I purchased the entire series before they sold
out. ( 26 shows) So now I can spare the set of 9 at a reasonable price
(less than what I paid) They are in great condition, with the original
sleeves, packing, etc. Some I haven't even opened yet. I know there
may be some skeptics out there who realize that I could have copied them
for myself and am trying to recoup some of my cost. This is not the
case. I would like to sell the ones I have 2 copies of, since I
obviously don't need doubles, and I understand that these shows are no
longer available so I thought someone might be interested in obtaining
these great shows.

I'm using a D8 to Opcode Datport via a passive 7pin cable.
Everything appears fine, however I'm getting the odd missing samples = jump
in my wave files, as far as I can say so far, maybe one gap per half hour of
transfer. I measured one of the gaps, it is half a second !
Anybody encountered this before, any solutions ?

Apogee ad500 setup. Supply mics, a preamp (or
phantom power supply/line transformers) and a dat deck and you're
ready to roll. $400. Pics available.
Setup includes: Apogee AD500, serial number 00001 (!). This unit
has been upgraded by Apogee to revision e specifications. Also
included are:
a) a 12 volt SLA battery system consisting of:
1) a 7.2ah 12 volt powersonic sealed lead acid battery, terminated
in a 4 pin xlr connector
2) a 5 ah 12 volt sealed lead acid battery (radio shack) terminated
in a 4 pin xlr connector
3) a powersonic charger. This charger is the 2 stage
model that will rapid charge the battery to a full charge and then
trickle charge/moniter the battery once it's charged.
b) a 15 pin > 4 pin xlr connector to provide power to the ad500
c) a 1 meter canare aes cable> canare pulse transformer. This cable
provides a spdif signal from the ad500's aes digital output.
d) a "cage/box" cover for the ad500 custom crafted from durable home
depot metal shelving. Seriously, this cage, while rather crude,
allows the ad500 some well-needed ventilation space, protects the
front panel knobs from being inadvertently jostled, and provides
stress relief to the unit's back panel xlr connectors.
This ad500 instantly and consistently locks to the appropriate
sample
rate and has always run like a champ. Reason for selling -- bought
a modsbm-1 -- and a vintage guitar.....!!!!
thanks

Hello,
I've been doing a bit of house cleaning, and like to offer up a pair
of vintage Gefell MV692 mics for sale. Includes:
- 2 mv692 bodies
- 3 m70 (card) capsules
- 2 m93 (omni) capsules
Over the past year I bought each (capsules / bodies) as a set,
however, each do NOT have sequential serial numbers. The bodies are
the older verison (Gefell still makes this mic in Germany) but are
(each body) from different eras, since one mic has a flat finish
(black) and the other w/a satin-gloss finish. I've used these for
home recording and live taping (i. Garaj, Fareed, etc), and have had
wonderful results. One of the omni's will need adjustment or work
since i've noticed different results in the high/lows. Beyond that,
the other 4 caps work perfect. Please contact me w/any questions.
Reason for selling: looking at a beautiful gibson acoustic guitar.
Price: $500 plus shipping (paid approx $800 one year back for the sets)

sample rates consistantly and instantly.
have 2 battery systems, multiple 15 pin cables, wooden boxes, etc.

Eliot -
Peak is the best 2-track editor/mastering solution for Mac that I have found
for about $300. I think it's about as sonically pure as it gets without
spending insane amounts of $$ on a pro rig - definitely better than Pro
Tools/Masterlist.
I have a spare legit copy of Peak DV that may do just fine for your purposes
(not sure which if any menu items are greyed out in "DV"). You just mark
where your tracks go, export to a "playlist", and hit a burn CD icon which
launches Toast for you. There are also some fairly kick-ass VST mastering
plugins that can help smooth out your sound if necessary...
Or you could let me master some of your stuff on my new Sonic Studio HD (the
DAW formerly known as Sonic Solutions) ;-)

Hey,
I am doing a radio piece on the niche of concert-goers who record shows. I
am looking to conduct interviews (preferably through phone, or by DAT or
Mini disc correspondence) with those who have a good deal of experience
recording shows, those who have spent a good deal of time and money
attempting to get that perfect sound. I do not intend to make it a "look at
how crazy those people are" piece. I record shows myself, and I do
appreciate the sentiment involved in recording music one likes.
Sample questions include:
"What made you decide to record shows?"
"How did you start recording shows?"
"How much money have you spent on equipment?"
"How much time have you invested into getting the perfect recording?"
"What's the craziest/funniest/scariest recording moment you have experienced?"
"Have you received feedback from musicians you've recorded? If so, what kind?"
If anyone is interested please email me at barrylajnwand@earthlink.net. I
will be more than happy to provide a copy of the final mix to all involved.
thank you and take care,
Barry
