I just got a laptop and am looking to go 24 bit. Anyone know the going rate
now? I bought it for $1,500 4 years ago and I'm not sure what a fair price
is.

Just looking to get some opinions on the Soundman OKM II microphones. Has
anyone on this list used them? Any pros/cons? Does anyone in the U.S.
sell them?
Thanks,
Chris

Damn,
There was a show at the Birchmere a few weeks ago, I would love to get a
copy of a show there on 2/28/03 which was Bill Kirchen, with Commander
Cody opening. I have had a fair amont of contact with Commander, A very
psycho dude. Kircen had been the Lead guitarist with the original LPA,
and now he's been playing with his own band, and is a mindboggling good
rockabilly Telecaster player. He's toured and played wit Nick Lowe, and
others. If any eastcoasters were able to get a recoring of this show,
as Commander Cody's band pened, and Commander had said he was going to
do 3 sngs with Kirchen's band.

I understand that Ringo Starr will be doing a special show at the Bottom Line this Saturday night as a promotion for his upcoming compact disc.
I'm not clear if tickets are open to the public, but naturally if would be very cool if someone could find their way into the venue & make a recording of this show.
If you are successful, I would greatly appreciate a copy of this show on dat or cdr. In trade, I have a wonderful copy of the George Harrison Benefit concert @ The Royal Albert Hall from November 29th, 2002....or you can choose from over 3,000 other entries on my list!
Peace,
Mitchell

First of all. I think that it is great that the Birchmere is finally waking up
to taper friendly bands. History and personal experience has shown that in the
past that anti-taper would be a mild statement for this venue. My experience
was that even when the artist was O.K. & the tape was for the artist, the
Birchmere wanted to charge a fee!!!! It appears that they want to change & be
different, however I am a little confused as to how tapers need to be by the
soundboard but not have mic stands. Yes this is a step in the right direction,
however it doesn't seem that they have come around 100% yet. Hopefully this
will be worked out & I too can begin to go BACK to the Birchmere. The original
Birchmere was, in its day, one of my favorite places to go and record!
PEACE
Stuart
"In general, recording is not allowed at The Birchmere (as most of the acts
we play do not allow it). If an act specifically requests that taping be
allowed, than we will allow it (like Keller, Robt Hunter, Derek
Trucks. No mic stands & no obstructing of anyone's view. Tapers need to
stay in the back by the soundboard, or have equipment that is unobtrusive
at your table. Our staff is friendly to tapers, as long as tapers are
friendly to our staff."
Sincerely,
The Birchmere
PEACE & BLESSINGS,
Stuart

Subject: Misloaded and mysteriously blank dat
Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 9:50:28 -0600
Hi All
I have a Sony D8. When prepping for a show recently, I had a set of batteries die while fast forwarding a tape. This caused my deck to eat the tape, which I replaced with a new tape, and went to record the show.
When I got home and tried to eject the tape, it caught on one of the wheels inside my DAT deck. I managed to get it unstuck without breaking it, and I wound the tape back up with the eraser end of a pencil.
I used a Sony head cleaning tape and successfully recorded two shows since my unloading incident. Yesterday I went to play back the tape that had got caught in the deck during unload, and it comes up as blank. My deck says it's blank. I spot checked the rest of the tape and don't get any sound output anywhere in the 2+ hours of tape that had a recording on them once (I gave a brief listen to it after taping the show).
Can anyone tell me what might have happened that my recording somehow got erased? Is it possible that the data is still on the tape and my deck just doesn't see it?
Thanks in advance for any information/help anyone can provide.

let me guess.. is the tape a Sony DG60P? (or DG90P) this seems to be a
frequently occuring thing lately with the Sony DGxxP tapes. they recently
changed the blank stock they used. i think the bad ones say "DDS-1" on
them now. at any rate, you arent alone, and dont waste time trying to
recorver the tape. there is no data on it. i had been using the sony
dg60p tapes for 8+ years without one single problem till recently with the
new stock. needsless to say.. ive switched brands
to prevent this in the future, i recommend recording a 30sec's or so after
you put the tape in. then eject the tape and put it back in. you can hit
play if u want to see if there are levels from what u recorded, or you can
just check to see if it read the timecode. if it read the time code on the
tape, you know its loaded properly.

not sure i understand what u mean? the quote from the birchmere staff
you included stated that tapers need to be behind the board, or tape at
your table as long as the gear is non obtrusive. which means blocking
anyone view or space. obviously if u have a stand, they want u behind the
soundboard. but im pleased they said you can setup at your table with a
low-profile setup :)
