Greetings,
I'm a little hard up for money and I'm looking to sell some little-used
gear of mine to pay some bills (mostly for a subwoofer for my home
theater setup, heh...) On the table is a Sony TCD-D7, AC Adaptor, case,
and Core Sound 7 pin digital out cable. The deck was used by me to
tape and play back for transfer something around 5 shows since I bought
it. I've only used 60m (120 minute) tapes, and it's been reliable--I'm
selling it hoping that someone that can get more use out of it than I
have. I bought it about 3 years ago from a gentleman who used it to
tape pipe organ recitals and an occasional drum corps show. I don't
have a figure on hours, but I have a feeling they're rather low given
the age of the deck. I believe it was built in '97. I don't really
have a figure in mind, so I'll consider any reasonable offer.
Secondly, I've got a used-once 20 bit flying cow AD/DA converter. It's
a great unit, with spdif and AES/EBU connections, and can be powered by
9Vdc. It's a very nice unit, I just don't have much of a use for it. I
sent it off to midiman/m-audio for servicing and they cleaned it up and
tested it all out and certified it like new. It's arguably a new unit,
as far as I'm concerned. Again, I don't have a price in mind, but I'd
consider any offer again.
I can provide pictures of any of the above on request via email. I've
got them all taken and waiting for you to ask :)
With kind regards,
Eric Bogart

This would in no way effect the sound that is played through the PA we hear
as an audience in a venue. This is just adding a digital watermark to the
wireless moniter feeds that the musicians hear in their in ear moniters.
Most tapes made by capturing moniter feeds are not that great anyway,
because each member of the band has a different mix sent to their in ear.
I heard a recent tape made this way by an undisclosed taper of an
undisclosed musician. And the moniter feed actually had a voice
teleprompter in the background to remind the vocals to the singer. ;)
Good Audience tapes will almost always be better than moniter tapes. Now
off console SBD mixes are another story. But your not going to be capturing
that out of thin air.
Peace,
JB

Is anyone in NY (upstate and L.I.) state planning on taping the three
VANILLA FUDGE shows on April 3rd-4th-5th? If so, I'd sure like to hear from
you.... The opening act is a new band fronted by the former vocalist for
Sir Lord Baltimore, so make sure you also tape the opener if you go. Here's
the band's link for the venue info and details:

Please contact me at mallness@surfbest.net if you tape any of these
shows....

Subject: Brickwalling - 0dB vs 20dB
Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 00:28:23 -0700
Several months ago I wrote to this list to describe a sporadic
recording problem I had. Several people told me it was brickwalling
and was due to the sound source being too loud, overloading the DAT.
I was baffled because I don't typically record loud music. However,
the problem continued and I wanted to get to the source.
I've just finished a series of tests recording my stereo. I set the
mic up in front of my stereo and turned the volume up and down and
also turned the recording levels on the DAT up and down. I did this
at 2 feet and 5 feet from the sound source, for both 0dB and 20dB
settings on the DAT.
Brickwalling only occured in one test - when the volume got loud and
the mic was 2 feet from the sound source.
Oddly, if I set the volume pretty high and the record level low and
increased the record level to clipping, I still did not get
brickwalling. I would think that would be roughly equivalent.
I was not able to get brickwalling in my tests from 5 feet away.
My usual recording environment is a good 15 feet away recording
unamplified acoustic music and occasionally amplified but not loud
music. To my ears, the sound of those shows is nowhere near as loud
as I had to turn up my stereo to get brickwalling from very nearby
(and no brickwalling from a modest distance). This makes no sense to
me.
Question: When I bought my DAT, it was suggested that I record at
0dB in most settings and only switch to 20dB if the volume was really
loud. That it was better to be at 0dB with relatively low recording
settings rather then at 20dB with very high settings. I'm starting
to believe this isn't true. Is there any reason I shouldn't just
always record at 20dB? What do other Datheads do?
Thanks,
neal

No manufacturer that I know of would cover damage due to mishandling or

However, some will, depending on circumstances (including how nicely
you ask, how expensive the damage is, if they want a reputation for
"we make our customers happy. period.", etc.) For instance, I broke
a B&K shockmount by dropping the bar it was attached to onto the
floor. They replaced the broken part at no charge.

They're certainly the best to fix it in any case.

This may have been addressed before, but I've not been able to locate the
discussion in the archive. I'm pretty sure it's been covered though. If
so, I'd appreciate being pointed that way.
I'm having problems with .wav captures from my DATs and analogs through both
the line-in jack and the S/PDIF in on my soundcard. The audio sounds great
as it comes through my speakers during the transfer, but the .wav captures
I've done in the past few weeks (it was never a problem before) have been
riddled with constant clicks and pop-type noises and I can't figure out why.
I'm using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 with XP, I have the most recent update of
DirectX and related drivers, I've changed the hardware acceleration to every
possible setting, I've made sure it's not my RAM, and I've removed my TV
card for fear it might be causing interference. I don't believe it's a hard
drive issue, because it's happened with both of my hard drives when I've
tested that possibility. Uh.. suggestions? Sorry to bring this up if it's
been covered repeatedly. It's just frustrating and I can't figure out where
in the process things are going wrong. Thanks. I may just need to buy a
damn stand-alone burner to do conversions. Yeesh.

in shn format visit:
http:\\www.comebackdownload.com
I have three shows from their most recent tour posted there.
3/9/03 The NorVa, Norfolk, VA
3/1/03 Avalon Ballroom, Boston, MA
2/28/03 Irving Plaza, New York, NY
IMHO, the 3/9 show has the best audio quality, it is really nice.
The others are really good too, but by the 3/9 I had perfected the
3 mic mix I was running.
Depending on your connection the download times for complete shows
are running around 15 minutes. People have seen upwards of 4
Mb/sec connection speed. All shn shows are located on
the "Downloads" page. More shows to be posted soon, so check back
often!!
Enjoy!!!

Hey Delano,
I use XP with a newer Sony Rewriter - 24x /10x / 40x and it works
flawlessly.
Don't use XP's CD burner - it is awkward, and does not support Disk at Once.
I use Adaptec (probably not the best, but it works fine).
I use Cakewalk Pyro for recording, splitting, etc. It also burns CDs but I
never used
that feature. You can evaluate it for 30 days after downloading from their
website.

Subject: WIN XP cdrw advice

I recently built a new system using Win XP but the Sony CDRW that I put in
seems not to be compatible with Win XP (despite the win xp drivers
provided). I checked WinXP's HCL (hardware compat. list) and not many
Plextor drivers are listed. Well, I need to replace a cdrw in a friend's
system (he bought a system made of generic parts) and wanted to try to
avoid any incompatibility headaches. Their spending limit is rather low,
so can anyone recommend a brand/model of CDR/CDRW that is fully compatible
with WinXP (that I might be able to find relatively cheaply)?
I know that WInXP has some feature called "drag and burn" - is
burning software required/advisable using WinXP? Are the usual software
tools such as MKWACT, CDWave compatible with XP?
Are there any obstacles that I need to be aware of and need to
avoid? Any/ all help appreciated!
Thanks!!
