From: Matthew DeNardo <matt_denardo@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: Metric Halo Mobile I/O Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 18:18:08 -0800 (PST) I'm selling my Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882 non-DSP version. It is in perfect condition, and has only been to about 10-15 shows. I am selling it because the unit is overkill for what I do. It is ideal for anyone who does multi-mic mixes, pulls mic + board, or uses multiple inputs and outputs. It offers 8 analog inputs and outputs, all with phantom, AES/SPDIF and ADAT digital in/outs and runs on a 12V battery. That said, I have been using it mostly as a two-channel unit, with a few multi-mic mixes and live sound reinforcement gigs covered. Read more at http://www.mhlabs.com/mobileio/mio_description.html First person to offer $1150 USD gets it, otherwise email me with competitive offers. I will cover shipping and insurance in the continental US. It will ship in the original box with accessories and power supply. Please email me with questions and offers. From: Jeff Lester <lester@trex.sp.trw.com> Subject: Re: Brickwalling - 0dB vs 20dB Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 18:31:01 -0800 (PST) Neal Copperman <neal@swcp.com> asked: >Question: When I bought my DAT, it was suggested that I record at >0dB in most settings and only switch to 20dB if the volume was really >loud. Suggested by the manual, or someone else? It's poor advice. If the volume is really loud you would want to switch to line-in. What mic and DAT deck are you using? If it's a D7 or D8 it is more likely to brickwall than other DAT decks. It is also very dependent on the mic, if the mic is sensitive (puts out a higher voltage for a given loudness) it is more likely to brickwall. >That it was better to be at 0dB with relatively low recording >settings rather then at 20dB with very high settings. I'm starting >to believe this isn't true. Is there any reason I shouldn't just >always record at 20dB? What do other Datheads do? Most DAT-heads don't record anything that quiet. :-) But the only reason you would ever want to record anything on the 0 dB setting is if you have the record knob to 10 and still can't get good levels at the -20 dB setting. The rule of thumb on brickwalling is the record knob setting of 4. If you are setting you record knob lower than 4, you have the potential to brickwall. Assuming good levels, ie. if you set the level knob to 3 and your peaks are only hitting -30 dB, you're probably not brickwalling. But if you have to lower your level below 4 in order to keep from hitting 0 dB on the meter, you are likely brickwalling. -Jeff Lester
From: Romain Kang <romain@kzsu.stanford.edu> Subject: Re: Brickwalling - 0dB vs 20dB Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 18:33:20 -0800 I've most often encountered brickwalling when recording deep bass -- not the thumpity-thump variety, which is often simply a kick in the 100 Hz range, but pipe organ pedals in the 16-30 Hz range. If I remember correctly, brickwalling occurs because as amplitude increases, low frequencies tend to require more current, while high frequencies tend to require more voltage. And in portables, current is harder to source than voltage. I don't know what you're recording or your test environment, but this low bass may not be present when you test with your home stereo. Also, many (most?) commercial recordings roll off the low frequencies because there's often a lot of undesirable grunge in that region of the sonic spectrum. > My usual recording environment is a good 15 feet away recording > unamplified acoustic music and occasionally amplified but not loud > music. To my ears, the sound of those shows is nowhere near as loud > as I had to turn up my stereo to get brickwalling from very nearby > (and no brickwalling from a modest distance). True LF is often more tactile than "loud", so that could be a possible explanation. Or perhaps brickwalling per se isn't the problem you're encountering. Let more experienced tapers listen to one of your recordings and see what they think. > Question: When I bought my DAT, it was suggested that I record at > 0dB in most settings and only switch to 20dB if the volume was really > loud. Is there any reason I shouldn't just > always record at 20dB? What do other Datheads do? It depends on what I'm recording. For most acoustic recording, I use the 0dB setting. If there's deep bass (e.g., a pipe organ) -20dB is safer. Some people suggest always using the Line In, but for softer sounds, that means you could be getting more noise from your preamp. I don't go to loud clubs or the like, so for the stuff I record, I've never needed to use Line In to get a clean recording. From: Rockcat <rockcat@bigplanet.com> Subject: RE: Brickwalling - 0dB vs 20dB Date: Wed, 02 Apr 2003 22:02:48 -0500 Neal -- You didn't say which recorder you are using, but it has been my experience that the mic-preamp in most of the Sony, Denon, & Casio, consumer, semi-pro, and even some of the pro models is pretty shitty. Here is a good rule of thumb: You can keep your pad set to 0db IF your record level knob is turned to "6" or higher, indicating that the spl (sound pressure level) of your source is relatively low. If you need to keep your record level knob at "5" or below, then you should switch the pad to -20db. If you are still "brickwalling" with the pad at -20db, then odds are that your mic cannot handle the spl (although this is not likely to be the case given the types of sources you claim to be recording). Whoever told you that you should record with the pad set to 0db in most settings was obviously unfamiliar with most portable DAT recorders. I've recorded literally hundreds of shows and *maybe* I've set the pad to 0db a grand total of 3 times (and I probably fried 2 of those recordings). With the above suggestions, you should be able to have your levels peak as close to 0db as possible, with no brickwalling and an excellent S/N (signal to noise) ratio. Paul K.

Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 10:14:23 +0200 (CEST) According to http://www.100megsfree4.com/mulberger/Policy.html (linked from furthurnet) no taping is allowed, although the phrasing is rather ambiguous - do they mean "not permitted at all" or "not at all permitted"? Anyway, taped the 2003-03-10 show at the Melkweg in Amsterdam (fifteen feet in front of board > GSB > JVC XM-R70) - good recording but noisy audience (everyone was EXTREMELY into it, it was a fun show). Is anyone planning on taping any of Joe Jackson's shows on his current tour? If so, is there any chance you could also tape Mary Lee's opening set? Unfortunately I can't afford DAT equipment, so can only trade CDRs (or do B&P or whatever), but would love anyone who could get me a copy of any of her sets in ANY format. I'd especially love to get the Chicago show from March 30, since my cassette tape recording of it came out pretty awful, with lots of loud talking. If you're planning to tape or have taped any of her performances and are willing to share with me at any point in the future (I will be very grateful, and do anything in my power in return) drop me a line at mandaryn_lemon@yahoo.com -- Thanks SO much! :) e. ===== Visit www.greenluna.net/cds/ for my trading list. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? What do other Datheads do? at any type of live rock show, i never use the 0dB setting (except by mistake!); if i use "0dB" i get tons of distorted bass, even with the peak levels within normal limits with the "20dB" setting though everything sounds fine as i understand it, this will vary depending on what mics you're using; my mics require the "20dB" setting, and it sounds like yours might as well (?) good luck! - jon -
From: casey coniff <vttaper2001@yahoo.com> Subject: ISO: P&F 2001 video Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 17:07:37 -0800 (PST) I am looking for a video of Phil & Friends 2001 show. My wife was crushed between the stage and the float that brought Billy, Mickey and Bobby up to the stage. She has had several major surgeries and has more to come from this accident. Besides the surguries she has lost 35lbs. due to an injury to her abdomen that cannot be explained. We have a lawsuit going against Clear Channel Entertainment and need to show what happened as in the way they controled the crowd during this float fiasco. All we need is the part with the float coming thru the crowd up to the stage and the float leaving the stage. We may be able to point out my wife, at least we could show how inept at their jobs they are. The boys were to fly in overhead as usual at New Years but chickened out and they put the float thing together on a moments notice, not the way to run a New Years celebration. Any help with this would be great, we have a mediation hearing May 27th and need to prepare for it , thanks formthe Coniff family. ===== Casey __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
