CD Storage Information Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2003 19:50:15 -0700 I buy sleeves in boxes of 100 from Compusa, then I place these in 5 1/4 floppy disc boxes. These were once popular and now can be found lying around abandoned in many offices, at thrift shops, and garage sales. Ask friends they will probably be glad to get rid of the clutter. You can label the boxes and they make it easy to flip through looking for that disc. Chuck Quinn From: Mexminute@aol.com Subject: I.S.O. CD Storage Information Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2003 10:19:37 -0400 As I feared, I have run out of space to house & display my cdr collection. Friends have suggested I switch to the cdr books, some have suggested purchasing filing cabinets with large cdr sleeves, and I too have researched how to best handle this problem. I am looking for an inexpensive way to house the most amount of disc for easy accessibility. Does anyone have any easy affordable solutions? Secondly, I am looking for a good copy or U2 from Point Depot in Dublin (12/27/89). I understand there is a great soundboard of this show floating around. Thanks in advance for your help. I look forward to your responses! ------------------------------ From: "Rich Vining" Subject: MD? Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2003 23:20:06 -0400 I'm interested in getting an MD player/recorder for occasional use... I still plan to tape DAT most of the time but thought MD might be fun to play with now and then. That, and a friend who taped a lot of stuff with MD a few years ago no longer has his deck and would like to transfer the stuff to .shn. So... what models are worth looking for? Figured I'd troll on ebay for something. I'm not willing to pay a whole lot since it's just something that will probably sit dormant most of the time. Just figured I'd field some opinions here on what models are decent. Optical out is the norm with those things, right? Thanks everyone for your help lately with my D7 load problem and XP transfer issues. Much appreciated. - R ====================================================================== Richard Vining rvining@emory.edu ------------------------------ From: pwking Subject: Re: reading tapes with dat2wav that don't have ABS? Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 00:35:32 -0700 (PDT) here's what i do when i get a tape that hasn't been properly formatted -- it's a little dangerous, but it works like a charm. note the exact second the actual recording starts, using relative time since there is no absolute time present. (hopefully there are a few seconds of tuneup, crowd chatter, etc. that can be sacrificed.) rewind the tape to the top, and simply record up until the point the absolute time kicks in. obviously pay close attention to the clock, because you're writing over a potentially precious master at this point. once you've got A-Time on the tape, even one bastardized after the fact like this, dat2wav will read it just fine. Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 10:27:32 -0400 (EDT) There are two simple, safe solutions to tapes without A-Time: 1. Clone the tape. The copy will have A-Time. 2. Some decks (e.g. Panasonic sv-3700) can add A-Time to an already-recorded tape. Recording from the beginning of the tape to the beginning of the music won't add A-Time to the music section. (However, if the problem with dat2wav isn't the lack of A-Time but the lack of formatting, that will be solved.) This unit was purchased late last year as new old stock from Jerry at Posthorn. It costs 950.00 new. I'd like to get 750.00. I'll pay the shipping and include your choice of interconnects. I have an extra set of monster rca>1/8th and one set of Canare xlr>rca. This is one of the few preamps that still uses transformers. This lends a warm character to the sound without sounding floppy or loose. The sound is very tight and well articulated. It has a small footprint that is perfect for stealth and will run for over 6 hours on AA batteries. I can provide URL's if anyone wants a sample. I'm selling a mint-condition Sony PCM-M1 portable DAT recorder that has 4 months left on the RepairMaster warranty (transferrable with/a $10 fee). The deck was recently gone over by Paul at ProDigital and I've used it to play one tape back since I got it back. I have the deck, original box and manual, charger, batteries, AC adapter, and the "leather" case. I've taped maybe 20 masters with it and I have used it to transfer maybe 50 DATs to my hard drive. Paul told me the heads are in great shape and will be good for a long time to come. $560 + shipping, firm. mark mtwnet@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 ------------------------------ From: distance Subject: recent masters ft Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2003 14:39:07 -0500 01/28/03 neil finn - 930 club, dc - ss dsm6>pa6lc>m1 (there are a couple cuts in this.. ask me for details) 03/01/03 bb king - carpenter center, richmond va - schoeps ccm4>sxm2>m1 (i was in a horrible location for this.. ask me for details) 03/04/03 black dice - 930 club, dc - dpa4061>m1 03/04/03 godspeed you! black emperor - 930 club, dc - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/04/03 godspeed you! black emperor - 930 club, dc - dpa4061>m1 (the last minute or so may be cut. i haven't transferred this yet) 03/05/03 godspeed you! black emperor - scottish rite temple of free masonry, baltimore md - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/05/03 godspeed you! black emperor - scottish rite temple of free masonry, baltimore md - dpa4061>m1 03/06/03 godspeed you! black emperor - cat's cradle, carrboro nc - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/06/03 godspeed you! black emperor - cat's cradle, carrboro nc - dpa4061>m1 03/07/03 godspeed you! black emperor - orange peel, asheville nc - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/07/03 godspeed you! black emperor - orange peel, asheville nc - dpa4061>m1 03/09/03 bardo pond - variety playhouse, atlanta ga - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/09/03 bardo pond - variety playhouse, atlanta ga - dpa4061>m1 03/09/03 godspeed you! black emperor - variety playhouse, atlanta ga - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 (there are some problems with this tape -- ask) 03/09/03 godspeed you! black emperor - variety playhouse, atlanta ga - dpa4061>m1 03/10/03 coldplay - palace theatre, louisville ky - dpa4061>m1 (vocals are low because this was taped front row dead center) 03/19/03 the album leaf - 930 club, washington dc - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/19/03 sigur ros - 930 club, washington dc - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/24/03 queens of the stone age - the norva, norfolk va - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/27/03 godspeed you! black emperor - palais royale, toronto ontario - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 03/29/03 godspeed you! black emperor - tivoli theatre, hamilton ontario - ccm4>sxm2>sbm1>m1 at this time i can only offer on cdr.. i don't have a second deck. i'm also still in the process of transferring all of these tapes, but i would like to start setting up some trades. what i'm _really_ looking for: any explosions in the sky shows i don't have. 1995-1998 radiohead shows with known gen/source info (especially november 95) other godspeed you! black emperor shows from high end rigs. mogwai shows from high end rigs. and this is a very long shot, but i'm looking for a GOOD recording of REM 11/21/95. i have one, but it sounds bad. i don't know if anything else is out there. there's some other stuff i'd probably consider, but the above mentioned stuff is by far my primary interest. ------------------------------ From: Neil Sturtevant Subject: battery replacements on the horizon Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 11:39:12 -0700 Just an FYI for all us tapers... Cut from Electronic Design magazine: Micro Fuel Cells Get Ready To Power Up By Ron Schneiderman, Professional /Careers Editor Want the battery in your cell phone or PDA to last forever? Okay, how about 10 times longer than your current battery? Developers of fuel cells for these "micro" devices believe they have the potential to offer about 10 times the energy density of current lithium battery technologies, which means a lot more runtime for mobile computing and communications products. Most of the more than 30 companies active in this area haven't said much about their plans in the past two years, presumably for competitive reasons. But market analysts who follow this technology expect it to begin to show up as an option for some laptop and notebook computers, as well as cell phones and PDAs, by the end of this year, led by Toshiba, Samsung, NEC, and Sanyo. (Intel's venture capital group has invested in two U.S.-based companies, PolyFuel and Neah Power Systems, and Intel demonstrated a fuel-cell-powered laptop at its developers conference in February.) Initially, because of their size, these fuel cells probably won't be fully integrated into the devices they're designed to power. More likely, they will be outboard accessories. But they will be designed for a specific product. For example, the first fuel cells designed for PDAs will probably be about the same size and form factor as the handheld units, but they will clip on to the handheld devices. Yes, they will add weight and cost. But like any other portable consumer electronic product, they're expected to start dropping in weight and price almost as soon as they enter the market. Currently, there are three major fuel-cell types for portable electronic products. One is direct-methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Another is proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMs). Then, there are metal-air fuel cells. It's still not clear which one is going to "win" in terms of market share--that is, which one will be the smallest, lightest, and cheapest, all at once in the early going. Indeed, one of the most important tasks for micro fuel-cell developers is to miniaturize their products as quickly as they can. (Chip-based fuel cells are being predicted by as early as the end of 2005.) Clearly, the market potential is huge. Just add up all of the portable computers, PDAs, cell phones, camcorders, electric handtools, MP3 units, and everything else you can think of over the next few years that could use these fuel cells.
