I have used techniques like this and find occasionally that I still can't
get dat2wav to work. It will read up to the point of the transition from
my after-the-fact recording to where the original kicks in, and stop at
that point. But on other tapes, Peter's method has worked fine for me.

have them set at 0db or -10db and what about the bass
rolloff?? I will be running them into a AD1000 (for
the pre and the ad). I will taping mostely club shows

Subject: video conversion
Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2003 15:07:02 -0500
I recently bought a digital DV camcoder and shot Chris Duarte at Galveston's
Mardi Gras.
I also got a soundboard tape and would like to "synch" the SBD DAT sound to
the video and perhaps put on DVD-R.
Can anyone give me any pointers or advice as the best and easiest way to do
this?
I purchased an 24/96 audio card from Len at Core Sound to import the sound
without re-sampling (thanks for this tip from fellow Dat-head Darryl
Deyerle!).
I would like to hear from anybody who may have gone down that road as to any
pitfalls to avoid, what they think of software for making DVD-Rs, whether
there is a way to mix the stereo sound from the video with the SBD sound so
it doesnt sound too "dry", and stuff like that.
Is there a newsgroup of forum for this?
I would like to put other analog video on DVD-R in the future so one thing I
might ask is advice on good capture cards. Unlike analog to digital audio
conversion, where bit rate is important, I can't find any specs or info as
to what makes a video conversion card better than another.....
any help or ideas would be welcome!

i just experienced this problem but didn't have the options everyone
else had to resolve it... I ended up using the dat2wav program and
coded in the following commands:
dat2wav /dat2wav /inputid X:X /waveout
(where the X is your id info)
what happened was that MSDOS just keep searching till music played...
as soon as i heard the track begin i gave it the command to stop:
contrl C
then i coded in the normal command:
dat2wav /dat2wav dataud /inpudid X:X /startid /errorcorrect
try that, see if it works? maybe im just lucky cause my A-time was
only lost for the first 20 seconds or so... not a significant amount

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the first thing you need to do is to
get a real DIO card to do the DAT transfers & avoid using the SB card for
that task
AFAIK all of the soundblasters/creative labs/audigy cards are designed more
for gaming, watching movies on your PC, driving speakers, etc and are not a
good choice for digitally transferring your beloved DATs
for one thing, they do unwanted "resampling" of the digital source input &
thus it is not possible to do a direct "bit for bit" copying with them
if you want to keep your digital sources "pure", it is best to buy something
like an M-audio or egosyswaveterminal card (i think they changed their name
to ESI btw)

note that some of the info above may be outdated, but still useful reading
when researching what to do sound-card wise
if your final target for importing your DATs is to be CD-R, and the DATs are
recorded at 44.1kHz sampling rate, then you won't need any "resampling" and
should use a card that keeps things "steady" at that rate (unlike the SB
card)
if your DATs are recorded at 48kHz then they will need to be resampled to
44.1kHz, either by a DIO card that supports resampling in hardware which
will do it for you on the fly during the transfer into your PC, or by
software which can either operate on the fly or after the fact
me personally, i use an el cheapo Ensoniq AudioPCI as the "system" sound
card to drive my speakers etc, and an EGOSYSWAVETERMINAL2496 PCI DIO card to
import my digital input from outside the PC
the WAVETERMINAL2496 card has the ability to resample the input from 48kHz
to 44.1kHz on the fly (or i can resample later in software if i chose to do
it that way; i've tested both methods and i'm satisfied with the hardware
conversion method, which is also easier/less time consuming for me to do)
> I have Sound Forge and the software that came with the SB Live card. I
> haven't explored their capabilities.
soundforge will work for the simple process of importing the digital data &
saving it to your harddrive
i personally prefer to use COOLEDIT2000 for that task & the subsquent
editing that i do
http://www.syntrillium.com/cooledit/index.html
you are about to embark on a fun but involved journey into technical things
that you probably never heard of b4.....take you time, read over the links
above, do some searching on the web, educate yourself, then jump in (but for
best results do so without that SBLIVE card)
hope this helps,

Martin, Most consumer recording gear runs on a -10 db signal. Pro Gear
runs at a +4 Db level. Few live mixing boards may have an RCA (consumer
-10 db) output which is what you need for your device. You can also
purchase or build a db pad (attenuator) which will take the +4 out put
down to a -10 db output. It's been a wlile since I built one but its
just a matter of a a couple of resistors for each line. Please check your
operating manual for that device regarding correct operating levels. You
may even have a switch so that you can take the two different signals.
Most likely you will need either;
1, A 1/4 '' (unbalanced) for the console output to a Db pad input ( 1/4
or xlr male). Db pad out (-10db) to your device. Please check your
operating manual for that device regarding operating levels.
2, A female XLR (balanced) for the console output to a Db pad input ( 1/4
or xlr male). Same as above.
3, RCA out (If your lucky) to what ever your device requires.
I may also ad that If your recording from the board understand that you
not be recording what you hear. The FOH mixer increases the soft stage
volumes and decreases the loud stage volumes. Alot of times you will get
a recording that is very hot on the vocals and very low on guitars and
bass. I am a pro FOH mixer as well as a Pro Live recording engineer just
to let you know where your source of info is comming from. The best
consumer recordings mostly come from the two mic scenario unless your in
good with the monitor engineer and he sets you up with your own mix. But
that would be real dry with no audience or live ambience and most likley
mono. For your second qeustion I donot have that information you'll have
to research it.
Sincerely,
Glen E Peladeau

Sup R?
A couple of things about MD....
Optical out is NOT the norm and is much coveted. Believe me I have spent
too much time looking.
In a portable, you will probably want a line in + mic in recorder, although
if using a pre-amp, the line in is all you need. The mic in is for tiny
portable mics with a battery box, are used for stealth or other types of
restricted recording.
The optical out is NOT available on any portables, and since the market
trend is now turned toward portables, very few home decks are made with it.
I use the discontinued Sony MDS-PCS - about the size of a CD drive, but a
little longer. It has Optical In and Out. The only other decks that have
optical out are the "pro" series $$ or a couple of Japan / Europe models
(100 or 220 VAC).
Don't be fooled by the USB interface or Net MD - yes they transfer to the
MD, but not from - such is the case with all existing CD/MD combo decks as
well. See www.minidisc.org for the most comprehensive info.
Peace,
Dave

I am currently responsible for the recording information and the setlist
information on the spfc (www.spfc.org). For those of you who don't know, the
spfc is the most comprehensive tour and setlist guide (amongst other things)
for The Smashing Pumpkins & Zwan. I'm looking for any missing shows on the
site or any recordings that are not included. The site is not interested in
your recording, just information pertaining to the show you taped. We are
attempting to archive all known information in regards to taped shows so
traders and fans can have a reference as to what show took place on what
date and what potential recordings are in existence. If you have taped Zwan
or the Smashing Pumpkins (any dates!) Please take a quick visit to
http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html and see if your recording information is
sourced. I make mistakes, so if something seems out of place please be sure
to inform me.
If you have taped a show - I'd appreciate the full line of equipment used at
the show, your taping location (was a mic stand used?), the length of the
show, and any known flaws that may exist in the recording. I want
information on everything - even inaudible microcasette recordings or
brickwalled tapes. Send to: tourhistory@spfc.org
If you know of a show that took place and isn't referenced on the site,
please email me the city, venue and setlist if you are aware. Send to:
recordings@spfc.org
Pass this information on to anyone who you think might have taped these
bands :)
Your help is very much appreciated!
