From: "Alan Kayser" <alankayser@hotmail.com> Subject: Parker/Schlippenbach/Lytton Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 12:23:02 -0400 Alert to all lucky enough to catch the most amazing free jazz unit on this planet, or any other. I would kill (not really) to be able to catch any of their shows, but alas they are smart enough to avoid Florida (wish I had thought of that). Anyway, I have lots of great jazz to trade with anyone who is able to record any of the shows. You didn't say what OS you're planning to run - that's just as important in the Mac world as it is in Wintel. I'm going to assume OSX... for OS9, about the best you can do for ripping/burning is to buy a copy of Jam - but any of the editing packages I mention below are also available for OS9. EAC -> use http://fink.sf.net to install cdrecord/cdrtools, and that gives you cdda2wav. Be sure to test your cdda2wav output a few times (md5sum is built-in) to ensure that you're getting exact copies. It'd be nice to have cdparanoia, but I don't think anyone's built it for the Mac. CDRWin -> I'm guessing that's a front-end? Again, I'd just use http://fink.sf.net to install cdrecord/cdrtools/cdrdao. You could probably use any open-source front-end to those that you like, especially if you're willing to run X11. Peak (below) also has a CD-burning front-end, but I prefer to run cdrecord directly. SoundForge -> I use Peak LE <http://www.bias-inc.com/>, since it came with my UA-30. I've also looked at Sound Studio <http://www.felttip.com/products/soundstudio/> - it's probably a better value than Peak LE, and there's a 14-day trial. That's just the stuff I have direct experience with. You might also look at ProTools Free, Spark LE, etc. You could also poke around sf.net for open-source audio packages, since any of them ought to be buildable on OSX. -- Mike

I have not kept up on OS X software of late. The best software I've seen for burning audio CDs is Emagic's Waveburner (Pro), but you can probably get by with Roxio's Jam or even Toast. WB's interface allows much greater control and plug-in processing, but if you just want an easy way to slap WAV or SHN files onto CDs, even Toast can produce audio CDs without gaps. Actually, Apple now has a free program for making CDs -- I have no idea if it does Disk-at-once, though (necessary for gap-free live CDs). There are a number of good audio editors for Mac OS, but the best deal, IMO, is Digidesign's ProTools Free. It is overkill for simple two-track editing, but I found its interface efficient and easy to figure out, and it has been quite stable for me. You certainly can't beat the price! -- Michael

From: "J. Matt." <jmatt23@hotmail.com> Subject: where do I buy one? Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 22:19:31 -0400 Hi! I'm looking to buy a new, factory fresh, Sony PCMM1 DAT deck. My older TCD-D100 is starting give out so I'd like to upgrade to the M1 since I see many of you tapers on the list use one. If anyone has like bought a new one in the past 2 years, and are really happy with it and the company they got it from, please email me so I can start shopping around and taping all the summer concerts I want to go to this year! I'm looking for a reliable company that will help should anything happen during the warrentee, but also a company that gives fair prices. Not sure what these run at for price these days but I got my D100 in like '98 and it cost me $900. Thanks all! _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
