I don't know anything about this bulletin board, but the last time he was
in twon I asked about taping and was told no (to any kind). Someone else
I know was told that a year or two ago as well.

Subject: Re: Video attenuators

Here's my advice, based on years of experience:
1. NEVER go directly from a board to a video camera. Always insert a DAT =
deck in the middle to control the volume or levels into the camera. Same =
thing goes with a direct connect from a set of mics to a camera, =
although I've seen it done in some instances w/o a DAT deck. From a =
board - a DAT deck is required.
2. Attenators DO work. Sony used to make one (can't remember the model =
number, cost was $10.) which I use now.
If you can't find the Sony part, then goto =
http://www.sonicstudios.com/access.htm#adapters and buy their 41 db =
attenuator that has 2 mini-plugs on both ends where one end goes into
your DAT deck and one goes into your camera (with the 41 db attenuator). =
It is rather expensive. Or buy a high DB attentuator from another =
reputable place like American Digital and plug that into your camera & =
DAT deck. Go for their highest DB attenuator, American Digital prices =
are more reasonable.
It will work if you follow these simple rules....you will succeed. Also =
important is to ALWAYS wear headphones and monitor the sound going into =
your camera via the headphone jack while filming. If you lose the signal =
from your DAT deck or if the levels are too high, you will wind up with =
"silent movies" or film with crappy sound. Never assume your video =
camera is still getting audio. Confirm, confirm, confirm.

Hi list & Jeff
well, i have some points for the JB3.
I'm a owner of a JB3, i tape some shows in the past, normally i tape from
the soundboard (1/8" to 2 RCA), i like it very much this method, but in some
shows, i dont have access to the SBD, and i tape with my mics, (SP-CMC18
hypercardiods and SP battery box). I really need a PreAmp, because the
signal of the SBD or my mics, are to low, and the JB3 dont have a PreAmp
like the Minidiscs (my past machine). But anyway, when i transfer the shows
to my PC; i open in the Cool Edit and i use the option "Amplifier" and with
this i have more "listenable" show. I have samples if you like to hear my
setup. For the 3 hoours limit, well, i have the latest firmware version, and
that limit exists yet, the limit is not in the JB3, is in the Hard Disk,
because use FAT32. If want to record a radio show of 6 hours, you can switch
every....i dont know, 1 or 2 hours, in commercial and then record another 1
or 2 hours, and like that. For the drop samples thing, i dont have that
problem at all, i have taped like 15 or 20 shows, and none of this have this
problem, and i think the JB3 is very reliable, well, the i like more the
DAT, but the problem with portable DAT is the price. i dont have any info
about any groups or list about the JB3, if anybody have a list or group
please msg me.

no, that is not correct. that was an early indication. further testing
revealed the jb's inability to accurately record a wave. There were hopes
that creative would fix this with subsequent firmware releases, which never
happened. firmware released have basically ceased for this unit, it appers

if you can tolerate pops, glitches, occasional noise throughout the entire

I think it can do mp3s for longer but wavs stop at 2:59:59 (not at 2GB)

there was a group involved with testing it, but it has since become
inactive, and we've given up on using the nomad as a recorder. great palyer,

Well, the duties of fatherhood forced another missed Springsteen show
(only the second local show missed in over ten years), so I'm
grovellin' for a nice tape. Can anyone out there help a newbie
Dad??? Plenty to trade, happy to do B&P, DAT clone preferred but
cd-r is fine. A DVD-r would be sweet as well ;-)
Thanks,

This unit does not have the coax cable mod, it still has both the 7-pin

I'm going to be going to the Field Day Festival out in Long Island, NY and
was wondering if anyone was going to be taping any of the bands there? I
just recently got a nomad j3 and have some stealth mics so I have the option
of recording myself, however, I'm going to be driving 12 hours from michigan
friday night. That's going to be very strenuous and the taping would be
quite strenuous too. Plus DAT recordings with nice mics will sound a lot
better. I was primarily looking for tapers that plan on taping the
following bands.
Radiohead
Beck
Spiritualized
Interpol
Tortoise
My Morning Jacket
The Beastie Boys
Sigur Ros
Blur
The Music
Elliott Smith
Polyphonic Spree
If anyone plans on taping these, please contact me so we could work
something out. This is going to be an awesome event, and I'd like to have
something to remember it by.

Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 19:44:59 -0500
Howdy, this is (tastefully) off-topic:
As bluegrass festival season commences across the ol' US of A, I am looking
for a CD player, or smaller digital recorder that is either one of two things:
1. A compact CD player that will allow variable speed constant pitch
playback (for slowing down fast fiddle tunes and the like), pitch variable
option with a small speaker and enough volume to use for playing along
with--that's small enough to take along just about anywhere...
~OR~
2. One of those small IC recorders that will accomplish the same thing
without being able to play back a CD--but will make up for it in size and
portability (will fit in my mandolin case maybe even)
3. Inexpensive and durable.
I know there has to be something out there close to satisfying at least one
or two of the three points above. Please email me off-list with your ideas
and experiences of what works to do this, that's on the market or available
on Ebay or wherever...
Thanks, and now back to DAT content:

The backlite is a electroluminicent lamp.
That lamp needs about 160 vol;ts AC pp
The driver for that lamp is an dc-ac converter running on about 8 khz.
That 8 khz is the tone you hear and that is normal
