They seem to favor letting a semi-experienced tech replace the whole mechanism, whether that is needed or not. Not wanting to pay hundreds of dollars to get my D8 to track better, I gave it to Mark at FET Electronics in Van Nuys. He actually fixed the deck quickly, the first time, for a flat rate of about $150. (More extensive repairs may cost more). Of course, FET is associated with the DAT Store so I may have a vested interest in mentioning them, but honestly, I was just happy to get my deck fixed with minimal problems. Mark also specializes in fixing Panasonic studio DAT machines. You have poor grounding in your cables, especially if you are going through a number of adaptors. 2. You have the mic input on high sensitivity.
