Sounds like a sync problem if you're using a digital
source. Some
studio gear will auto-lock onto an incoming digital
signal to prevent
this, or an external word clock device can be used to
sync all
digital gear in a chain.
I've experienced glitches in the firewire transfer of
recordings from
the JB3 to the PC. These were my own recordings from
the analog
line-in of the JB3. They're clean recordings on the
JB3, but don't
survive the transfer to PC without glitching. Whether
the problem is
in the resampling that windows does, or in the
Creative version of
the firewire protocol, or somewhere in the firmware of
all the
devices involved, I dunno.

Subject: Problem with Sony TCD-D100
Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 10:50:47 -0700
Hello All,
Before I send my DAT in for repair I wanted to check
with he list to
see if
anyone has had any experiences similar to mine.
Last week I used a Sony 15CL cleaning cassette for the
first time on my
TCD-D100. I then went to record a show in town and
everything appeared
to
work as normal. When I got home I listen to the tape
and the recording
was
just static throughout with no music recorded at all.
Since then when I
try
to play a DAT it will play the tape for about 4
seconds and the tape
will
automatically stop and go into the "Unload" on the
screen. I have also
put
in a DAT and fast forward, a tape and I will get about
18-20 seconds
and
again it will automatically stop and go to "Unload" on
the screen. When
I
put in a new blank tape it does not even recognize the
blank tape.
I have also found that the tape is not forwarding at
all when I do
play or
fast-forward the tape. I did trouble shooting and have
excluded the
power/battery source, DAT tapes etc.
Any help would be appreciated since the summer concert
season is
starting.

Hey there,
A friend of mine wants to convert some old cassette

find a

she can try to do a general cleanup and have a new

Any info is appreciated, many thanks!

Subject: JB 3 Firmware Problems
Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2003 15:00:12 -0500
I live in the community where Creative has its
customer support and
have
been working on this issue for some weeks now with
these people....in
defense of the J3 I can say that it is a fine recorder
if you realize
what
they have done to screw the circuit paths up.
I will say is that the J3 checks out as a VERY
accurate recorder
given
you do not mistakenly do all the firmware upgrades. It
seems that the
last
firmware upgrade they did was a hack job, they tried
to place 48 db
into
this tiny 1/8 input....MISTAKE....the clips and
glitches you will hear
is
the result. The gradients move by 4 db for each of the
12 levels
equaling 48
db. It was never designed to function in this way, but
some marketing
genius
said hey lets make this look like this thing will work
at 48
db...WRONG.
First the bad news, the firmware upgrades cannot
be reversed :( The
good
news is that if you power the line input correctly
with a proper preamp
you
can leave the line level adjustments alone getting a
VERY good clean
and DAT
comparable recording :) Another option is to use a
preamp with optical
output and voila! If you must adjust the line levels
only do so
minimally as
the gradient as we said is 4 db for each step, in
other words the +4 on
the
line level inputs would actually be 16 db. There are
no audible
glitches at
this level unless you are a bat!
Well I hope this dispels some hesitation on this
product as it is a
shame that we have to beg, scream and claw for
affordable recording
gear and
this is one of the first products that promises that.
Only advice I can
give
is read closely your firmware upgrade specs and
beware! Mark Ragsdale -rags-@sbcglobal.net

Subject: RE: "Cleaning up analog hiss" -or- backyard remastering ATTN
Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2003 17:27:13 -0500
Dear poster who mentioned cleaning up analog hiss, and all traders on
digital media:
In a recent trade with a very kind and accomplished gent in Europe, I was
impressed with his packaging of some commonly traded and some very rare
archival gems. He'd put together excellent cover art with setlists,
etc--all chronologically accurate for the artist we were trading. One think
caught my eye toward the end of our transaction; he mentioned that two
tracks at the beginning of a certain Ebbett's Field tape featured a guitar
effect that this artist no longer uses, and that he had removed those
tracks before "remastering" the tape.
I just want to make this point to all traders out there, and I added it as
part of the preamble to my trade list, if you'll pardon the hysterical
language...
"Remastering":
From time to time I receive trade items that are packaged into very nice
"albums" with fancy cover art, setlists, show notes, etc. Of course I
welcome that kind of embellishment of the material we trade. What I insist
upon, however, is that you not "massage" the audio that is part of the
trade pool. For example, you receive a very nice Leo Kottke show from
Ebbett's Field in Denver, and it's hissy, with some problems (wow, analog
dropouts, flutter, etc.) during one song or the other. I beg of you: do not
'fix' the copy you send to me. I prefer to leave the Liberty Bell cracked,
so to speak. I am referring particularly to noise reduction, hum removal,
compression, fade-ins, vinyl crackle removal--all of that type of signal
processing that some archivists call "remastering" cannot be undone by me
or any other traders down the line. If I receive an oddly muffled old
analog master, with no hiss, and that telltale gated sound during spoken
passages, I usually know it's been "fixed" by some geek archivist (like
myself) with the nifty new noise reduction plug-in for Sound Forge. Let me,
and any others down the trade stream from me, make those changes to our own
personal copies, but pass the trade material on UNALTERED in any way.
(Note: this doesn't necessarily include level maximization of entire
programs but do not "normalize" individual tracks of CDs while burning.
We all have a chance to share older and older material as technology gets
cheaper and easier to use. I hope that we also develop an understanding of
when NOT to use certain aspects of it. Old tapes of multiple generations
sound like old tapes of multiple generations. Using noise reduction on them
is worse than adding more hiss--it can't be undone and pollutes the trade
pool with a whole new chemical.
