Can anyone clarify, either through direct experience or good source info? I wish to roll tape for their Tempe show on the 27th of this month. "Dat" and "reliable" in the same breath! You were doing >good up until this. ;-) DAT makes a perfect recording about 98.5% of the time. For our purposes, that's a lot more useful than a recording that's 98.5% perfect, all of the time. ********** I've followed this debate closely; I was amazed to hear that Jamie Lutch was coming down against this device (Nomad Jukebox 3, and gawd knows, he's done his homework on it), given my (me and Zach's, as well as his) experiences with it. We've taped 30-35 shows with it, split towards the latter, between analog-in patches and optical digi feed out of an Eridol UA-5, running Oktava 012s (card). We've never, repeat never, heard an ***audible***, repeat, ***audible*** glitch of any kind, in 100 hours on this rig. Zach actually just ran this rig this week, using the coax digi UA-5 > 7-pin out into a <50-hour D8, and optical UA5 > TOSLINK into the NJB3, and found the NJB3 recording full of noise, just as Jamie (et al) posted the "NJB3 sux" posts. HOWEVER, the D8 recording reflected the exact, repeat: exact, same flaws, meaning the UA-5 was the source of the issues, NOT NJB3... AFAIK, the NJB3 still makes recordings indistinguishable ***audibly*** from DAT and other 16/44.1 devices, and once those recordings are losslessly transferred (and that's bit-perfect firewire, 5 minutes or less for a gig or two...), compressed and traded, who cares what inversion testing or other comparisons yield? You missing those seven bits, out of a coupla billion, that are impossible to hear? I say, from raw experience, and (almost) plenty of it, the JB3 still performs like a champ. Anybody got UA-5 failure stories? Or *proven* JB3 failure stories? Shall we compare the number to "Uhh...my D8 (substitute D7, D3, D100, M1) looked like it rolled, but it didn't" stories...? Please email for copies of SKB (last 3 tours, Southeast) or misc other (clean, nice) 012 > UA5 > JB3 recordings... Sorry for the baffling sentences - been observing Rule #5! (To no impact on my thought process, I swear) Check archive.org for nice recordings of 012 > UA5 > NJB3 vs. Core LCB > >BB> D8 (not meant to be a recording/mic equal, but interesting) vs. Shoeps MK4 > MiniMe > DAP1 (all onstage) of SKB 3/5/03 Charlotte. Hot show, too. SWG ------------------------------ From: "J. Matt." Subject: DAT vs. JB3 Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 19:58:40 -0400 > >Wow. "Dat" and "reliable" in the same breath! Yeah, I've had a recording or two not come out because of a misload, but I've fixed that problem and have not had any misloads since. I record on a new tape once at home using a CD player (playing music) to a recording home DAT deck. Then, the next day when the show is about to begin I press play on my DAT deck, watch to see if the levels are going up and down, if they are, then the deck has loaded properly and is playing the tape correctly. I simply go from play into record by holding the record button and pressing the play button. The deck is now recording and has loaded properly. This method has worked 100% of the time I've been using it so far. To be safe though, I also always carry a spare tape and charged Metal-Hydride batteries. Just in case. First, is there a big difference in the Sound Devices MP-2 and the Denecke AD-20 as for sound quality? Next question, when using the Denecke AD-20 the sound seems to be lower than when recorded just using the microphones connecting straight into the mic input. I have tried raising the levels by using the gain post's on the side of the Denecke, but the bad thing is that when you turn the gain all the way up you hear a hiss which then comes out on the recording as well. Is there anything that can be done about this, or should I just search for a better preamp? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Here's what it is: Asus CUBX-E Motherboard with 440-LX chipset, 100 mhz system bus. I use this board in my own digtal audio box. I like it for several reasons. First, unlike most p3 boards, which only support 512 megs of RAM, this supports 1024 megs of RAM. I've been running like that, and it is nice. it allows you to run several programs, and still have an entire CD in RAM. It is an OEM processor, a P3 tualitin, I believe with a new Cooler master fan rated for a much larger processor. The proessor is 800 mhz, the fans rated for the biggest p3 CPU. It also supports 8 drives. 4 ultra ATA and 4 ATA 100. Mine I have a 10 gig boot and software drive, on the ultra ATA Channel, and 3 ATA 100 drives. I will install a brand new Seagate 7200 rpm 20 gig drive. I will put it on Ultra ATA channel 0 master. I would reccomend using an older 15 to 20 gig reliable drive for your boot and program drive, and moving the new Seagate over to a ATA 100 drive, which I use for storage only. It will easily support any drives you pop in. In my box I have 2 IBM's, a 20 and 30 gig, and a Maxtor 80 gig, ATA 100, 5400 rpm. I will include a new Plextor Ultraplex $0 max, internal or external. I will also put the burner of your choice in. I have a Plextor SCSI 12x10x32 refurb that has not been opened since I got it. if you'd like I'll use that burner, or the burner of your choice. I will also install a brand new OEM SCSI Adaptec 2930 pci card. As far as a case, i will use a case set up for 4 CD drives, 4 HD's and a floppy and a zip. it should support all tat with the existing ATA channels, and the scsi card. I am open to reasonable offers. Just off the top of my head, using the components is described, I am guessing this computer will be in the $500 ballpark, and will inlude either a ATI Xpert 98 or 200. Prices will vary depending on components of individuals preferece. Keith I also have a brand new Delta Dio 2448. ------------------------------ From: h Grape Minkoff Subject: ISO: Princeton University tapers Reply-To: the_GrapeMan@yahoo.com Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 06:17:02 -0700 (PDT) If there are any list members who attend Princeton, can you please write to me off-list. Are there any reel-to-reel fans (esp. in the UK) that would be willing to discuss tips, suggestions, brand names, etc for my friend? Which ones are better - the older ones from the 60s/70s, or the newer models? Is Revox still the leader? Etc... I realize this is DATheads, but surely some of us (besides Tsalikes) worked with reel to reel in the past, before making the gradual transition to DAT. One DAT friend is STILL using R2R, claiming that in 200 years from now, the reels will survive, while his DATs will have lost all information. Whether or not he's alive at that time is irrelevant to me, as I only plan to live for another 140 years, at the rate I'm going. Thanks in advance. Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 12:12:21 -0700 (PDT) Check the ASPI version. The versions I am referring to below can be found at this link (or goto adaptec.com and search 'aspi' if this link doesn't work). http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/common/searchcont.html?BV_SessionID=@@@@0134473994.1051211349@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgadcidhjefigcgelcfmndflldfll.0&language=English+US&docType=DRIVER When I moved to XP, I had to manually install the ASPI layer, and I went w/ the newest _471a2 and I was getting the same problems you are getting. I changed the ASPI layer back to v470 and the drive worked fine. There seems (in my experience) to be a problem w/ DAT2WAV and the newest ASPI from adaptec. I am guessing since you did installs recently, you might have picked the newest ASPI as well.
