It is a heads up-like call to tapers that are too engaged in their lives to watch for a certain band to tour. I agree we should tailor it down a bit like add a link or what not. Whatever lessens the bandwidth. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ From: "Chuck Miller" Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #719- long tourdates posts... I did this successfully for years (now my ZA2 sits in the original retail box since my new motherboard doesn't have an ISA slot.. anyone want to buy a ZA2?)... I always used CoolEdit to record and told it to grab the incoming (48K signal) at 44.1K... you'll see the ZA tray icon turn blue when it's hardware resampling. > From: "drcraver" > Subject: Re: Zefiro ZA-2 / Win 98SE / Resampling on the Fly > Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 07:36:07 -0700 > > Did it ever work for you? The Lite-Tite is a jacknife clamp intended to fix umbrella reflectors onto photo- or flash-heads, but is very versatile as its two female ends will clamp securely around any spigot or stud you throw at it. While there were level differences that I had to compensate for by riding the volume between source switches, and there were slight differences in imaging due to mic angles from the onstage mics, the results were very interesting. Listening rig was NAD 7240PE > Paradigm Titans / Fried 4B passive sub. Between Shoeps MK4s and Oktava 012s, the diffferences were very subtle, and both Zach and I clearly favored the Oktavas for the loud passages and the Shoeps held a slight edge in the softer spots. Overall, we were both giddy that the lowly Russian gear held its own against a revered set of mics. More amazing still, the Oktavas ran into a Eridol UA5, a very cheap piece of gear when we considered the Shoeps ran into several thousand dollars worth of preamp and A/D. Finally, I'd like to add that the Oktava recording was made with a NOMAD! In closing, I'll say that the Core LCBs (omnis) that also ran 17 cm apart on the Oktava T-bar (battery box that I made, no roll-off > D8) sounded remarkably great too. The omni pattern made direct comparison to both of the cardioids a bit odd, but the Cores sounded truly amazing, especially against the Shoeps! The bass was a bit grainier, and the highs a shade less round and transparent, but overall, a huge performance from $70 mics, a $10 battery box, and the D8 line-in stage... Go try it for yourself - you'll be amazed too. www.archive.org > search audio archives for 'kimock' > sort by date > show 1000 results > find 3/5/03 - Scott ------------------------------ From: David Nolan Subject: tour dates posts Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2003 10:41:05 -0400 Just another 2 cents from another long-time lurker, some-time poster... I like seeing these tour date posts - I have never regretted having other tapers in other cities alert me to new bands I might want to check out - I HAVE regretted NOT hearing about stuff I ended up missing... Again - learn to delete or scroll past if it's of no interest - I would say that MANY posts here are of no immediate interest to me, but I always like seeing what is on the minds of fellow DAT-heads, whether it's FS postings, tour dates, taping stories, tech issues, or the occasional OT BS... dave n ------------------------------ From: artood2 Subject: tour date debate ! Thanks to all who responded. The most fantastic response I got was from David McGee (keytohwy@staffnet.com) who offered to do it for me and burn to DVD-R, and describe the steps of what he did. Thanks David- what a tremendous and generous offer- it came out great. I thought I would share this information as there were at least a dozen people who have emailed me asking me to share any info I received, and it is DAT related. Notice the times taken for each step and you will get a sense of what is involved time-wise for such a project. What to Do: 1) Import video into Video editing program. David used a Mac and inported into Final Cut Pro realtime. I think Adobe Premiere can be used for PC users (mac too?). Realtime = the length of the video. There is no way to speed up this step. In this case it was just over 90 mins. 2) Import DAT audio into audio program. David used DAT>UA-5 into Peak 3.2.1 Realtime-93 mins 3) Trimmed video start and finish (fade in, fade out, etc.) 20 mins 4) Imported 16/48 audio into Video program (Final Cut Pro) and synched with video. Pretty easy to do, by watching drummer. 20 mins (note- you can move both channels at once) 5) Placed chapter markers in Video program so that DVD program picks them up. 45 mins 6) Exported video, no audio, into MPEG2. David says he knew the uncompressed audio would be about a GB, so he compressed video to be around 3.3GB, knowing he'd have some overhead for credits, etc. 90 mins Note: Once a user installs DVD Studio Pro, there is then an option to export the Final Cut Pro video into MPEG2. 7) Fired up DVD program (DVD Studio Pro) and imported video and uncompressed audio. 10 mins Note: David used DVD Studio Pro for Pro DVD Production. While iDVD comes on a Mac with a DVD burner for free, DVD SP is $500, but it allows you to control the bitrate of the compression of the video, allows for the inclusion of uncompressed audio (important to us!), surround sound production, etc. 8) Created a still Photoshop file for the 'credits.' 30 mins 9) Created (muxxed) DVD disc image 30 mins 10) Burn, baby, burn. 30 mins The synch job came out perfect and quality of video and audio were both excellent! It would take additional time to do a menu, but for a live show like this, the chapter marks were fine- you can simply skip to the next chapter or whatever song you want. Thanks again David! If anyone else has similar info to share, I would be happy to hear from you. If purely video related, please contact me off list.
