As well as the 3/5/03 comparisons, anyone interested peeps should check out
the 2/15/03 shows.
I found AKG 393, Soundfield, DPA 4022, and Schoeps mic sources...and also a
24-bit version of the DPA source. The difference between 16 and 24-bit
recordings is really amazing.
Hope some other folks will check this out and give feedback on both show's
sources.
peace,
James

First of all, DO NOT BAKE ACETATE TAPES! You will destroy them! To tell if
your tape is acetate or polyurethane, hold the reel up to a light, if you
can see light through the pack, it's acetate. or, try to break off a little
piece of the tape, if it breaks cleanly, it's acetate, if it stretches
rather than breaking, it's poly.
To bake a tape you need an oven capable of maintaining a constant
temperature between 125-130 degrees. Home ovens won't work. Use either a
decent quality convection oven or a food dehydrator (I use a Nesco
Snackmaster Pro and it works great. check it out at:
http://www.nesco.com/products/product.phtml?category=300&subcat=0&id=39 )
Bake the tape at 130 degrees for 8 hours, let it cool down in the oven, and
then you can play it for approximately a month before it degrades again.
Just make sure the temperature doesn't get over 132, or you will melt the
tape.

Hey People,
This will be my last PUBLIC post on a non topic issue (like posting tour
dates ;^)
"...
this is also not DAT TRADING ONLY HEADS.
this is directly from the FAQ:
"{1} What is dat-heads? How does it work?
dat-heads is a digestified mailing list for discussion of Digital
Audio, especially pertaining to Grateful Dead Audience taping and GD
tape trading."
i win again. ... "
With this rational, I understand why you are making such a point to
argue something that has been repeatedly beaten to death. While you
were on the DAT Heads page, why didn't you do some searches through
posts and see what the administrator of this list has requested. Does
his vote count for something? I don't think anyone minds 10-15 lines of
info, It crosses the line when it turns into 1/2 a digest worth of info
that could have been shortened with no more than a half-assed effort.
As someone else mentioned, the archives have to be stored and
maintained. Are you inconsiderate enough not to care since you don't
have to worry about keeping a site running and having enough HD space
for its ever growing data, or it may be that you just haven't thought
about if even 25% of all digests had lengthy posts of tour dates, the
space adds up.
As for the Dead mention, I believe that had something to do with the
original members being made up of a large proportion of Dead tapers.
As for a band not having a web page, I guess I could be wrong but in
this day and age even most garage bands have a web page if they're
playing out. For those who don't, you could easily post the shows
w/info to something like jambase (I've seen non-jam band bands in there)
and even offer a link from here. I don't think there's a cost to post
shows there (I could be wrong). Everyone's happy that way, and maybe
you get to know the band and get on the guest list when they find out
that you're helping to promote them. Lists are gonna happen either way
because there's always new people joining this list who don't know what
has been requested of the "crowd" prior to his/her joining. It would
just be nice to see them limited.
Maybe Sean (the moderator, not me) could offer his opinion, maybe you
don't care?
As mentioned, I will not waste any more public space on this topic!
Peace,
Sean

Subject: Nomad JB3
Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2003 23:07:44 -0400
I couldn't resist. I went out and bought one. Yeah, Len's thing is coming,
and very cool, but just the PDA costs more than this puppy. And yep, I
know about the Sound Devices thing coming, but it will cost 8 times what the
JB3 does, and I know both will do a lot more, but like I said, I couldn't
resist. Very worst case I got an overpriced portable hard drive. I also
bought one of the half-cigarette-pack-sized silver coax->optical converter
from MCM. I tested the setup at home using 44.1 and 48 from my dvd player
and digital cable. Coax and direct optical. Everything I recorded came out
absolutely glitch free. Even stuck my D7 in the signal path. I even sent
it the spdif coax out of my ART DI/O (put some old cassettes to CD). So
then I got bold, with only the one included battery, I took it to a
festival. I ended up several back in the coax chain each time I patched it
and each time there were ticking noises throughout the recordings. From the
results I saw at home with the same setup, I am convinced that these cheap
coax->optical (including the CO2) converters are not as tolerant of
split/jittery/non-voltage compliant spdif signals as say my D7 is, which, at
the same location in the same chain recorded perfectly fine. This brings me
back to JB3 batteries. I was only able to get one band on the internal
battery (two bands would require just over 3 hours, I got just under 3 hours
the day before), so that's why I was swapping out for the D7. Next time I
go out to record/patch I will bring my Audio Alchemy DTI, which reclocks
(not resamples) the signal. My hope is that it can clean up the signal
enough, as it is designed to do, to let the JB3 record a clean signal. The
DTI was designed as a jitter reducer to be put between older generation CD
players (used at transports) and outboard DAC's. I got it because it strips
SCMS. I have a optical and coax out on it, so I could use both, to see if
the coax->optical converter gives trouble again. The thing that sucks is I
am almost trying to go home with a bad recording ;( Luckily I can run my
DAT off my own mics, and patch this rig outa someone else at the end of a
chain.
So this leads me to ask Jamie, (hey Jamie, we finally met in Rak/my room in
Hampton) did you every try a recording that was direct optical out of the
source and get unreliable results you could only attribute to the JB3? I'll
keep trying, but as long as I give it a good signal, it seems to record
fine. I think this may be a signal quality/compliance issue instead of, or
at least in addition to, the JB3 doing something wrong in streaming the
audio to the hard drive.
Now, what about battery power? Will it tolerate 6v even though the line
lump and dc in jack are labeled 5v? I have several 7805 voltage regulators
laying around, but if the one volt higher is ok and battery is going to
drain down, do I need to bother? Anyone built/used an outboard 6v battery
pack with a JB3? (Yes, I know 4 x NiMH will get me near 5v, but I want to
use a 6v SLA) BTW, what's up with the what appears to be a choke on the
power cord?
TIA for any input,
Alan

If you are like many tapers, you hardly ever have a chance to listen to
your old dat masters because they are not on cdr,....
It always makes me laugh when people ask how I'll listen to the tape when I never transfer to cdr. It's called a play button and it's right next to the record button. Not to be confused with the stop button which has a tiny dot over it.

Hi, all.
Just my abbreviated thoughts on the tour date
debate...
Including tour dates in digests that are archived for
future use can be a great resource to people like
myself that have attempted to compile a chronology of
a band's live shows over the years, since few artists
keep their old tour dates on their websites forever.
Take care,
