the dec 2002 dev tools were specifically for 10.2, so would most certainly give
you problems with 10.1 or 10.0.x...

After doing a clean install of my OS to 10.1 a few months back, I
couldn't get shntool or shorten to compile. The Dec2002 DevTools
package didn't do the trick. So today's project was to do it all over
again. I erased my scratch disk, and clean installed the original OS
X. After the reboot, I let software update upgrade itself, and also the
OS to 10.0.4 I still had the DevTools images from before, and tried to
install those. Dec2001DevToolsCD.dmg gave me an error and hosed
everything up to that point. I tried again, and installed the DevTools
image off the official CD first, then I installed the following in
chronological order:
Nov 30 2001 Dec2001DevToolsCD.dmg
Feb 11 2002 Dec2001ToolsUpdate.dmg
Jun 8 2001 DevSDK.dmg
Jun 8 2001 DevTools.dmg

Is there some reason to compile your own app instead of using the one
from http://www.hornig.net/shorten.html? It's always worked fine for
me, even though it hasn't been developed since 2001.

I'm looking for any/all of the 4 dates EJ played with Trey Gunn & Jerry
Marotta. I've got a copy of the last one, but one of the songs has some
serious dropouts in it. Lots to trade...

I truly shocked myself a few months ago. First, I will describe my
stereo. I have a Sony STR-D715 reciever, a Technics SLD-202 turntable,
and the speakers that stole my heart when I was 17, in 1971, Klipsch
Cornwall's. Mine were built the last year before these behemoths were
discontinued, 1986. 15" woofers and 2 horns in each cabinet. I had
bought the same turntable new in 1982, gave the one I originally bought
to an extended family member in 1992, and bought an identical one a few
years ago, so if the need arises, I could do LP>CD conversions, with a
Grado GF3 cartrige with Eliptical stylus. In honesty, I have speakers
that are in Audiophile hall of fame, all time top 50 speakers ever
built. The rest is middle of the road, at best. After years of hearing
the chatter coming from the audiophile corner that LP's sound better
than CD's, I decided to do a little comparison test. I found a copy of
one of my favorite recordings ever, Professor Longhair's "Rock N' Roll
Gumbo", an original LP, in pristine condition. Who ever bought this
record, obviously did not dig R+R. If you've heard this recording once,
you played it 100 times, if you like R+R. I cleaned it, put it on the
turntable, and let it go. My almost 20 year belief that CD's were the
ultimate, went down the tube in a flash. One other thing to throw in
here. In 1984 I was robbed of my entire record collection. I was
devestated. I bought a couple of records, and then heard CD's, and saw
in the store there were fewer and fewer records, and more and more
CD's. I had about an equivelent Sony reciever of the day. I also
didn't have the Klipsch's then, but I did have Cerwin Vega's 12" 3 way
system, before C-V got to be so big.
Unfortunately, this is the way the Record labels and Audio equipment
manufacturers have pushed us, and also we have come this directin due t
analogs shortcomings. By my ears, which did not believe this was
possible, no digital format I have heard, can match the sound quality of
a pristine record on a decent stereo. Unfrtunately records, Reel to
Reel and cassettes have the same shortcomings as DAT, only worse. A
record cannt be played without damaging the grove. I have worn out
records, in the past, with 1.5 grams of tracking force on a Technics,
Direct Drive, S-arm turntable. You literally had t pay 5 times what one
of these cost in 1981, before some of the members of this group were
born. Reel to Reel, IMO, is the best sounding music format made
available to the public, at something approaching a reasonable cost,
that I have heard in the last 40 years. Cassettes had nice points, but
their 1/8th inch tape wasn't one of them. Every brand of cassette I
ever used had major mechanical problems and massive failure rates, for
me, except Sony. Others had their good luck and loyalty with ther
brands. I have not listened to DVD-A. I am not expecting much over
CD. I may be wrong, and I have a DVD player with 24/192 playback
capability, but I haven't boought a burner, as I haven't seen DVD-A
audio burning software, that can specify that high a word/sample rate.
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong place on all the software packaging.
Also, after considerable CD-R burning experience, I am very, very
committed to Plextor SCSI burners, and woould like to see a Plextor SCSI
DVD-R, A burner, before I bought any.
I do find that IMO, DAT does soound better than CD, to an incomprable
level. I would prefer to burn up a DAT deck, or a reel to reel, to
listen to music than play CD's. I do have 2 Tascam and a Teac reel to
reel in the room I'm in, a DAT deck, CD player. Lately, I have been
buying what are advertised on eBay as pristine records, that are mostly
blues. Last night I recorded to reel a Champion Jack Dupree and an
older Buddy Guy-Junior Wells Delmark recording. Absolutely blew me
away. I plan to wear out my Reel to reel and one of my 2 DAT decks,
listening to music. I will be listening to some of this on CD, and I
also plan to build a computer, that will serve as an audio source for
24/48 and 24/96 music playback. IMO, Sony, Phillips, and the rest are
all ready planning, and tooling the demise of CD and DVD. I also read
about it in the Los Angeles Times.
Also, many CD's are still recorded on 2" tape. It just sounds better.
And it costs a ton more. The price of a 24 or 32 channel, or stacked
24's or 32 channel digital recorder, is peanuts compared to the analog
32 channel Studer. The Big analog deck whipping through tape at 30 IPS,
at $200 a reel, which lasts maybe 20 minutes, is huge compared to the
cost of hard drives. I saw a used 2" Studer on eBay several months
ago. The starting price was $15, 000. I've heard in big studios, a
Mackie 24 channel HD recorder, is considered a disposable piece of
equipment. A friends band was recording tracks for a new release. They
were recording at Stevie Vai's studio. On a Studer, the digital
recorder was for practice takes.
Enough ranting,
Keith

"That has to be about the most thoughtless, selfish comment, I have read on
a list. For an individual to think someone who doesn't want to know about
bands they dont'care about creating and updating a website about the bands
they don't want to know about is ludicrous. You couldn't pay me enoough to
do it, let alone do it for the community"
**Thoughtless? Not at all....I choose my words very carefully when I write.
Selfish? I'm still laughing....it's selfish for me to say this, but not
selfish at all for you to say that I shouldn't post anything that is not of
interest to you....the hypocracy of your statement is apparently evident to
all but yourself. Not being willing to do anything to help your community
is what sounds selfish to me....when was the last time you offered up a BWT,
Keith? Bitching about a non-existant "problem" without offering to help
with a solution that's fair to all is what's ludicrous....put your money
where your mouth is before you decide to complain, otherwise your complaint
is not legitimate. Hats off to our moderator for at least showing a shred
of compassion and common sense.
"I didn't bother to look who wrote this,"
**Then why do you bother to look at and then bitch about other posts that
you don't want to see? I wrote it, and stand behind my words.

**Interesting how the only arguments used by those who share your viewpoint
are 1) Hypocracy 2) Discrimination 3) Schoolyard Namecalling.....how
intelligent and informative. Let's cut the crap and get back to talking

Not wanting to leave any turn unstoned (ah, scratch that - reverse it) I
decided to go the whole hog including postage and did a much needed
reinstall of my primary O/S. For your mileage, you could probably
reinstall 10.0 without erasing the drive in order to preserve your home
directory and still be able to compile the Shorten tools.
Once I had 10.0.4 installed, and the aforementioned DevTools packages, I
compiled the very latest versions, shorten-3.5.1, shntool-1.2.3, and
textutils-2.0 without any problems at all. They still work after upgrading
to 10.1.x, and probably will after the 10.2 upgrade.
A couple of extra notes on 10.1.x upgrades ... DO NOT allow software
update to run after the 10.1 install. You have to run the outdated
SecurityUpdate10-19-01 in order to install the InstallerUpdate1.0 needed
for the 10.1.1 patch. If you follow Apple's advice, and install
SecurityUpdate7-18-02, none of the subsequent packages will install.
Also, for Terminal commands, instead of typing out the whole path, as in
changing directories (cd), just drag and drop the folder into the terminal
window after the wanted command.
To clarify a point, this version of Shorten is not the Carbonized app. It
runs in the terminal window, and specifically, shntool is indispensible for
cutting a .WAV into tracks, or ensuring tracks were cut on sector
boundries.
My offer for sending off a CD of DevTools packages still stands.
