If you don't want to even open the Terminal then the carbon app at http://www.hornig.net/shorten.html will work fine, but it hasn't been updated since 2001 and is based on the shorten 2.5 code which doesn't create seekable .shn files like version 3.0 does. This means you can't skip ahead to any point you want within a .shn when playing it. BTW, the easier of the two options for playing back .shn files on macs just got a bit more difficult because the MacAmp Lite website is no longer hosting software. Someone developed a SHN and FLAC plugin for the program but it was discontinued, so you'll have to get it all at http://www.arcticlounge.com/maltx/index.php The other option is to use the XMMS app, but you'll have to install X11 and Fink, which is more complex than I want these instructions to be. Speaking of, it's about darn time I get to them. I'm assuming you have OS X 10.2 or later, don't have X11 or Fink installed, and are using the default tcsh shell. I'm also assuming you know enough about unix to perform basic tasks in the terminal. 1. First you need to download or somehow obtain the December 2002 Developer Tools, which are available at http://connect.apple.com 2. After downloading and installing the dev tools, grab the latest versions of shorten and shntool from http://www.etree.org/shnutils/ 3. Decompress these and place the resulting folders in your home directory 4. Open the terminal and type or paste this command: echo 'setenv PATH /usr/local/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.tcshrc 5. Quit the terminal and relaunch it, then type the ls command to view the contents of your current directory, which should be your home. Navigate to it if not. 6. You should see a couple folders named shorten-3.5.1 and shntool-1.2.3, navigate into either one 7. Type ./configure and wait for the prompt to reappear after all the terminal is done processing 8. Now type "make" and wait for the prompt to return 9. Now type "make check" and wait for the prompt to return 10. Now type "sudo make install" which will ask for your administrator password, then wait for the prompt to return 11. Finally, type "rehash" and the app will now be succesfully installed and ready to use. Repeat these steps to install the other one. To make sure they work, type "shorten -h" or "shntool -h" and you should see info on using the commands. For more detailed instructions type "man shorten" or "man shntool" to view their manuals. The pages at http://mtdshn.home.mchsi.com/macosxshn/ are also helpful, but some things there are out-of-date. If you run into any problems, feel free to email me, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to help since I'm learning as I go. If any of you more advanced geeks have any more info to add or corrections to make, please let me know. Aaron http://home.attbi.com/~catalystx/trading.html ------------------------------ From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: Stealth Mic Recommendations? Date: Thu, 08 May 2003 04:51:31 -0400 I recently sold my Sonic Studios DSM-6/LS mics. I would like to upgrade to something that can handle louder sound pressure and will not distort. If you have owned a pair of these mics and now own the HEB's made by CoreSound or something similar, or, if you just have a pair of stealth mics or a setup that particularly rocks, I'd love to hear from you. I tape all my shows solo, so I can't use one of the high end rigs that take two people to run. I usually tape indie rock bands, right in front of a stack.
