I'm looking for live concerts, televison appearances in audio and video, radio broadcasts, and any other personal appearances. Gillian is playing several dates in California in May, and opening for Norah Jones throughout June. I'll trade for these shows. I'll even trade for incomplete shows, fragments, or poor quality sound in order to document the performance. Have the largest Gillian Welch collection and several uncirculated shows to offer in trade on a conditional basis. I can also transfer your vhs, vcd, s-vcd or DVD to DVD-R. There is no quality loss on DVD-R, so it's best to start from your original materials. This is what you reported the LAST time: Subj: wow Date: 5/27/00 12:21:54 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: KindTaper To: GuySonic Mr. Lombardo, As you said, I would not be disappointed, so I am writing to express my satisfaction with the mics so far. The tape I made tonight is very crisp and clear. The bass is clean, with no distortion like on countless oade made tapes. I tried the mics with my d-8 alone and that bit sounded fine, but yielded low levels. This is fine, because I would much rather have good sounding tapes that peak at 12 with the level control on 10 than tapes that will peak at 2 when the volume control is on 3. I have about 10 or so more shows to tape between now and the second week of June. if they all turn out as good as tonight's tape, you are going to get a ton of free advertising. Thanks again for your help, the prompt delivery, and the peace of mind knowing that my tapes will sound a whole lot better from now on. Wes =========================== REPLY AND ADVISORY: As you may NOT have remembered, there are two steps to getting clear recordings or very loud rock type music especially if positioned right up against the stacks. 1) Use the PA-6LC3B in middle 170 or most aggressive 250 cycle setting. 2) Purchase the DSM-6S/EL ($600: extra low sensitivity) mics for most right up against the stack rock recording. You have done NEITHER of these as suggested. Instead you purchase a simple 85 cycle bass filter good for ONLY mild loudness excessive bass control. I advised you that this will work well under less severe excessive bass situations. You have continued to use just the DSM-6S/L (not the /EL model) for taping right up against very loud/bassy speakers. The DSM-6S/L model does work for most POP/ROCK recording, but NOT right up against the stacks at full blown very loud rock venues!!! Now you post that you get distortion with those crappie Sonic Studios mics!!!! Thanks a lot for posting to a generally not well informed recording group and spreading the ignorance further about unsatisfactory taping results (actually with improperly configured for what you are now recording) system components. Thanks for giving me an underserved black eye for nothing. And you call yourself "kindtaper"!!! Sorry for the heat, but I did advise Wes about what he should be considering, but he stated that he "could not afford" getting the most appropriate PA-6LC3B filter solution, but felt he didn't need the most aggressive bass filter (or need to consider a lower sensitivity model mic) and would move back away from the stacks if having problems. But that was back then. Look again at the DSM mic chart: http://www.sonicstudios.com/dsm.htm And bass filter chart: http://www.sonicstudios.com/pa_x.htm Then select the proper system components that honestlly fits your recording requirements. =========================== ALSO, now that Nomad Jukebox 3 bashing has subsided, readers might be better informed of an external DSM microphone preamplifier the size of a pocket pager that fits MD, DAT, and NJ3 recorders LINE level input perfectly. This microsized mic preamplifier has been available now for over 5 months with many very satisfied users.
