This is one of the most innocent inquires that could turn ugly. First, wire
is wire. Sure, constructed to one degree of success or another, but it
passes electricity. Now, after more than 4 decades in the recording and PA
biz, here is my theory. Once you get OFC cable (oxygen free copper) and
slow-draw the strands and put it all in a nice durable jacket, you are at a
price plateau. This pretty much is the Mogami-Canare level. Great cable,
great price. We sell lots of it. Anything more is logarithmic and designed
to only separate you and your bucks--you will have to spend one helluva lot
of money for little (if any) sonic improvement. Now as far as fifteen feet
of one wire having different response than another fifteen feet of the same
cable, I submit it is impossible to inject logic into a totally illogical
statement.
We sell excellent cables as well a duplex snakes custom made with either
brand and we use Neutrik connectors; inquire if interested.

"Cheap" delays are exactly that. Due to circuit topology that is
price-driven, you will find that cheap delays have a real problem passing
things like, say, audio. Rent a real stereo delay from a pro sound shop.
Names like Lexicon and tcelectronics (sic) are popular.

I was pleased to see the intelligent discussion of my reference to how a
digital recording can be screwed up. Much was brought up about compression
and limiting and such. Although a bit technical and referring to radio
processing, here is a nice article on what can go wrong there:

Keep in mind that most expensive xlrs are 'snake oil', and your money is
much better spent on improving other parts of your rig.
That said, canare star-quad is some pretty good cable, if you want to make
it yourself, the cable is dirt cheap (34 cents/foot), and the xlrs are $2-$7
each depending on which you choose (silver plated/gold plated/straight etc).
For most applications, the straight gold plated ends are the best ( If youre
not a whiz with a soldering iron, they even have solderless ones (Part#
NC3FEZY-P), but I havent tried these)
the link for canare cable is here:
www.markertek.com/MTstore/product.CFM?BaseItem=L-4E6S+BK
the regular solder-type xlr cable ends are here:
www.markertek.com/MTstore/product.CFM?BaseItem=NC3FX
(note they have pictures of panel mount jacks, which is incorrect, the 'NC3
series are all cable ends)
The straight ones are not too hard to solder, the right angles can be a
bitch, but are worth it if you need em. It saves me a ton of space in my bag
by having the v3 and ad2k sit down on the right angles, and theres no stress
on the cables that way.
and if you really dont feel like dealing with making your own there are
websites that have pretty reasonable cables, made of the same materials, try
searching google for 'xlr mic cables'

since i upgraded to a pair of DPA 4061s i have no use for my CSB stealth mics
anymore. i bought them in January 2001 directly from Core Sound so i'm the first
owner. i got them new for approx. $380 (taxes and duty in Germany included). I
have taken good care of so they are in very good condition technically. Optically
they are fine and having stealthed about 25 shows with them they show hardly any
wear apart from the paint rubbing off the clips a little.
that's the package:
-miniature CSB mics with removable clips
-switchable battery box with 9V battery
-windscreens
-right angle adapter
-receipt and customs declaration
i'd prefer to sell this set to someone in Europe cause insured airmail shipping
to other countries will be really expensive due to the high shipping costs. let's
say the first European to pay 200 Euro has it shipped insured to the door.
...i'm also still looking for a used Sonosax SX-M2 preamp with manual.
Thanks

Subject: NiMH batteries in M1/D100
Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 12:39:32 -0400
Has anybody ever done any tests of how long different milliamp-age NiMH
batteries will run the M1/D100 with a correlation between the number of bars
left in the LED? It's pretty misleading when a 2000 mA NiMH battery will
power an M1 for 3+ hours but two of those hours are running on just one bar,
etc.
Or going in the other direction, how much time does one bar / two bars / etc
really mean on these Sony decks? There are so many different factors
(were the batteries discharged completely & then fully recharged, recharged
and then sitting around for a while, etc) that I don't know if something
like this could be very accurately done, but I'm hoping somebody has tried.

Subject: ISO New Monsoon tapers
Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 12:27:06 -0500
Greetings,
I've just become the official archivist for the up & coming jamband New
Monsoon (http://www.newmonsoon.com). First order of business is to make
sure that a high quality tape is pulled for each show, so that's where I
need your help. I can offer guest list +1 for the designated taper of each
show. The band is in mid-tour right now, playing in the following cities
over the next week or so: Trenton, NJ (tonight!); Burlington, VT
(tomorrow!); Northampton, MA (Friday); Allston, MA (Sat); Landisburg, PA
(6/4); State College, PA (6/5); Pittsburgh, PA (6/7). The full tour
schedule is at http://www.jambase.com/search.asp?band=new+monsoon.
Because the band is playing mostly bars at the moment, quality of the feed
from the board (not to mention quality of the house engineers) is hit &
miss. Therefore, priority goes to the volunteer who can bring out a decent
audience rig. If you've got two decks, of course we'd love to get both
board & aud sources, but the real key is a good audience tape.
If you're interested in helping, please reply not to the digest but to:
gary.hartman@tapirproductions.com. Thanks for your attention.

my trading list, which tends to look best if you have the text size set
on medium. If you happen to know how to fix the problem that occurs when
any other text size is used, shoot me an email. I'm clueless when it
comes to html.

phew! I've been busier this year than I thought. I still have ~10 shows
to add to my trading list that I received in past week. Other than
those, my trading list is up to date. Please pay attention to the want
list. I try to not to steer clear of it, but I can. I'm not interested
in all of the artists/bands I've taped or have recordings of. A good
clue would be if I only have one or two shows and the band is not on my
want list.
