Record the SBD and audience sources to two machines, then sync and mix on your PC when you get home. You won't have delay induced artifacts and you will have an opportunity to try diffent blends of the sources. If your field mix is not exactly right, you can't fix it later. ------------------------------ From: "Neil Sturtevant" Subject: change Reply-To: Date: Thu, 29 May 2003 13:06:47 -0700 please remove my work addresses: neil@directed.com neil.sturtevant@directed.com from your addy books. i am no longer associated with Directed Electronics, Inc. Date: Thu, 29 May 2003 16:03:41 -0400 I have been very happy with my Luminous cables both at home and with my rig. I use a special XLR set of the Monarchs http://luminousaudio.com/interconnect/monarchsig.html between my 4011s and V2 I use the XLR version of the Sychstra Signature Interconnects between my V2 and 2K http://luminousaudio.com/interconnect/synchestrasig.html The primariy focus of this company is for home audio but I've been using them with my rig for over two years and could not be happier with the results. If you contact them you can get stuff made just for taping. My only affiliation with this company is that one of the owners is a friend and I have spent a fair amount of money now on cables for my rig and for my home system with them. I had a lose neutrix connector back in January and ran some of the canary cables for Phish in Hampton and while still feeling really subjective about this whole thing I believe I really missed hearing the sound of the Monarchs between the 4011s and V2. I have instigated blind tests that prove this very wrong. So much is based on overall system resolution and the listeners ability to "hear" his investment--by God, if he paid US$1000 for those cables, he is gonna hear a friggin' improvement! They sold a lot of green markers this way. I suggest the old trick of wiring half your system with the old stuff and the other half with the new stuff. Use the balance control to A-B them. Simple. I own mics that are about US$30 grand each. OLD mics; very good mics. I asked my close and personal friend Mr. Ray Kimber (see Kimber Kable) for a set of XLR cables for them; he sent me pure silver. Never sent them back; at US$100 per foot, they do make a difference. > I reccomend checking out Zaolla. You want to talk about beefy cable...wow! > Any way, I think analog cables do make a difference. Especially when you are > talking about longer lengths. Great cables! Correct, but perhaps due to capacitance. However, at low impedances, the difference will be minimal. > Another thing to ponder is that you really need a playback system capable of > resolving these differences in order to really give a rats ass...I suppose. Yepper. One also needs a system of good resolution to make a call on final processing, EQ and balance. Using headphones or toy computer speakers won't cut it. > now, cables in the digital domain....I dont buy the theory that one is better > than another. bits are bits, they are either "there" or "not there". After all, binary is binary be it a PCM stream or TCP/IP (for > example). There may be basic quality concerns about how the cable is made, how > rugged, etc, but the signal is the same no matter what. We are back to capacitance and distance affecting timing errors at the receiver, but in this day and age, it is dealt with very convincingly. Now it is important to note that different cables are designed for different interconnects. Please don't use CAT-5 for that 500-foot run to your mastering D-to-A. I've used an Alesis MidiVerb 4 for many years as a delay unit. I'm not a "golden ears" person, but to my ears the sound is A-OK. The main drawback to this unit: the software is way too complicated, ie, it can do about 2**18 more things than just a delay, so it takes a little work to find and/or program a simple delay with nothing else going on. Then, once you get there, it has a horrible feature that you separately set the delay time for each digit, ie, ms, 10ms, 100ms are dialed in separately, so "dialing in" a delay time by ear is not as easy as if it was a continuous counter. (This explaination isn't as clear as it could be, but if you buy one you'll see what I mean!) The MidiVerb 4 was about $300 when Alesis was still in business. I imagine you could get a used one for well under $200. Alesis also made a QuadraVerb which does "even more", and a MicroVerb which does much less. Note there were also models of the MidiVerb earlier than "4" and some of these did *not* have full 22Khz frequency response, so watch out... --G ------------------------------ From: "Robert Hundertmark" Subject: dalai lama - taper friendly? I've got tickets for the Fleet Center, I know he's doing four nights at the Beacon, two at MIT. should be some precious stuff, especially in=20 this day and age. I read a book by Thich Naht Hahn - really a transcript of a talk he gave = at some prison. One of his entourage had a tape recorder which was taken = from him on the way in, and somehow he got it back, recorded the talk, and = without that, there would be no recording. unfortunately, they didn't give him back his sonosax, so the low end lacks definition........ but anyway, this would be real cool stuff to=20 record and circulate. maybe make the world a=20 better place...... ------------------------------ From: "Hevron, John-Ryan" Subject: FS: Bonnarroo Ticket $130 Date: Thu, 29 May 2003 18:23:56 -0400 My friend is getting married that weekend, so I can't go. I have been using a Denon DRM 700 3 head cassette deck for doing transfers to CD. I bought it a while ago, and have had it stored most of the time. Now with what I had to do with the deck done, I am selling the deck. I had 2, and sold the other one a few months ago, on this list. Now I'll part with this one. I doubt it has more than 100 hours on it. It looks brand new, and it sounds incredible. It doesn't have a scratch on it I have recorded a few CD's to this deck, and some sound better than the CD. I don't have the original box any more, but do have the original owners manual. The deck has only been used in a smoke free environment. I'm asking $80 for the deck, I should be able to ship it for $15. I don't have any need for a 3 head deck any more, and have a more basic 2 head deck that should meet the occasional need to play a cassette. I can guarantee the deck will arrive in excellent condition and play perfectly. it will also be insured. Keith ------------------------------ From: "cps ." I hate to imagine how many generations it is, but until I find the person who taped it and get a digital clone, I'll settle for this. This is the complete 35 minute gig including crowd riot (later used on Fierce Recordings' JAMC "Riot" 7"/CDsingle). I can fill the CDR with a short (11:18) interview from '85, with a tiny spec of a later interview. These could be interesting for JAMC fans... or maybe it'll lead to someone who has a digital copy off cassette master posting the recording information and offering a better B&P for this list :-) Anyway, CDR only - copied via itunes (1-track for the gig; 1-track for the interview). Special guest is CC Catch. This is the first time these people are performing in the US. It's about as rare as an American concert by fellow Germans Alphaville. Anyone who is planning to tape... well, I can't offer anything like this in trade, but maybe can offer something else for trade/etc. This is about as embarrassing as asking someone to tape Michael Bolton or Celine Dion (2 more favorites), but I'm desperate. Also, Australian indiepop darlings Even As We Speak perform in the US in July, at least in San Francisco - anyone taping them this tour, please please let me know - I've loads of 1987-1993 performances of Even As We Speak, almost all are first generation cassettes off D6/D3/DAT masters. This is the first band who did an acoustic cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" but have never received proper kudos for it. They also recorded with Sarah Records.
