I don't find A/B tests to be of much use, except in the rare cases when
a cable is so much better, or synergizes so perfectly with a system,
that the improvement is striking and obvious. I have heard this once,
and it wasn't with a particularly expensive set of cables either.
Usually the difference is more subtle, and sometimes any change can be
perceived as negative until one gets accustomed to the difference. One
shouldn't focus too much on various aspects of the sound. Let the system
play while you're doing other things -- this allows your brain to pick
up on things that you might miss if you are focusing too much on
particular details.
I suggest leaving a new cable in your system for a week or two, and then
switching back to the old one. Klay mentioned Kimber silver cables, and
I recently had a pair of Silver Streaks to try against the PBJs in my
system. At first, switching back and forth, I thought it was a toss-up.
But I left the silvers in for a couple of weeks, and then switched back
and I heard the difference immediately. Instruments suddenly sounded
like toy counterparts of the real things and the added grunge had me
turning the volume down (one reason why level-matched comparisons are
not useful either).

I was hoping someone with more technical background than I would step
up, but no one has. So here goes...
One thing I am convinced of is that the "bits are bits" theory is wrong.
This is clear from my own listening and a large amount of well-founded
literature. And it doesn't take much to convince oneself that this must
be the case. Consider:
Digital is an abstraction: a voltage level between this an this is a 1;
a voltage between this and this is a 0. A cable simply passes an
electrical (or optical) signal, and it's up to the receiver to interpret
it. Digital signals are designed to be more precise on the amplitude
axis, but the way the signal is chopped up makes it less accurate on the
timing axis. (Please correct me if any of this is wrong.)
Further, S/PDIF has no separate clock signal, making it even more
susceptible to imperfections introduced between (and including) the
sender and receiver. It seems well accepted that even minute timing
variations are picked up by our brains, although most of us would not be
able to pick out such variations without a good deal of experience.
As for the relevance to DAT-Heads, well, maybe there isn't much. Good
mics and good positioning, excellent mic pres and A/D converters, are
all still going to be far more important than your digital connection.
Almost any reasonable quality digital cable will do an adequate job for
most field recording, so don't sweat it. But let's not go on making
claims that are being repeatedly refuted by numerous respected audio
engineers and by the evidence there for anyone to test.

the OUT cable appears to be bent/possibly damaged on this. A light signal
does come through though. IN cable is fine.
$40.00 and shipping takes it. Pic can be sent on request.

Lunatec V2 purchased in February of this
year, I'm the 2nd owner. 6v version, serial #V154.
This has a few very minor scuffs etc. from
normal use that in no way effect performance,
works like a dream. I'll also throw in a Eco
Charge 6v 4-pin XLR power cable with it.
Looking for $675 firm, paypal preferred. I'd
also be willing to trade for an MP2 (or stock
SBM1) + cash.

I used to email with Michael Goetz - who wrote the Dead Taper compendium

email his current email address - ironically he lives only a mile or 2 away from
me. Also was the addendum ever finished?

Hi all-
I have a Deadbase X up for auction on e-bay. It is in mint unused
condition since I also have a hardcover version that I use all the time
and this one just sits on the shelf and I can use some extra cash and
space... Volume X has all the known set lists through the last Soldier
Field, 1995 show.
Out of print and hard to find, so get it now.

Got three shows I still need to fill with tapers.
Once again I am able to offer A guest list spot per taper (for a total of two each night)in exchange for a copy of the show.
This offer is only for people who will be running their own rig patchers need not apply.
No sbd patches, power, etc... will be given. Also, No stage taping as the band is using in ear monitors now!
Finally, if I put you on the list I need to have copies of the tapes in my hands no later then 14 days after the show.
I am sorry to have had to add this but from past experiences it seems I must.
If this sounds cool, and you are interested in getting on the list please shoot me a email @ bob@soundtribe.org with the following info:
1> your full name as it appears on your photo i.d.,
2> the best email address for me to send info if needed,
3> your phone number (would only be in case of emergency, and if I had had these in the past I would have been able to
correct some problems before they happened. This is the ONLY reason I am now asking for that info, and it goes
no further then me.),
4> and finally the rig you plan on running.
I will have a copy of this email along with updated info and what shows we still need tapers for
Listed At http://www.soundtribe.org/summer03.html.
Please include in your email to me if you would like your email address NOT listed along with your name and rig info on
sed page. If you do not tell me to withhold that info I will post it so that you can be contacted about acquiring copies
of your source. Again, if you do not want to be listed speak up when you email me!

Subject: Trade Dead Tix to Help Pregnant Wife!!
Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 13:54:31 -0400
Hi all-
Looking to work out a trade for the following tickets:
I HAVE EXTRA:
(1) Saturday, 6/21 Hartford Lawn
(1) Friday, 6/27 Camden Reserved
(1) Saturday, 6/28 Camden Lawn
I NEED:
(1) Tuesday, 6/24 PNC Reserved
(1) Wednesday, 6/25 PNC Reserved
(1) Sunday, 6/29 Vernon Anything
I already have 1 reserved ticket in Section 103 for the two PNC shows;
Row O for Tuesday (6/24) and Row B for Wednesday (6/25). I am trying to
get a reserved ticket as close to these sections/rows as possible and
would be willing to swap these reserved tix and one of the extras for a
pair of reserved tix together...
The thing is, my wife is pregnant and as such, she originally did not
want to go to the shows when I mail ordered but, of course, now she
does. Because of her condition though, she can't be on the lawn dealing
with crowds and needs to be able to sit in an actual seat as the night
wears on... So, being the good husband I am, I am giving up my only tix
to the other shows to get her in to these shows and although she will
most likely be complaining most of the time, I guess I need to sit next
to her... ;>
I can either meet the person at SPAC to do the trade or we can do it via
overnight mail, etc...
I would also buy any of the tix I need at face value.
I am also dropping off my tape decks at the taping section and will hook
up any traders/helpers with copies of the shows...
Any help would be appreciated.
BWT-Another copy of Legion 4/9/75 on CDR to the first person who sends
an e-mail to: datheads@computorney.com referencing this e-mail (I have
another BWT for this same show on another post) so as not to be denied
accidentally... I will only respond to the winner...
Thanks all!!
