It'd be really great if we could get the entire festival recorded, and so far I think theres only two of that will actually be taping. If anyone is going and is willing to help, could you please email me at SpeshulEd69@hotmail.com so we could get things coordinated. Thanks Ed

Caveat > emptor. > > -Dan > > > ------------------------------ Dan, I tend to agree a great deal with what you have said. The timing and amplitude are of course very important when it comes to digital signals, but not as critical as analog. The thing is that there is always a "range" of acceptable signal (and therefore error) that can be accepted, and still get the same bit-for-bit transmission at the receiving end as was at the sending end. These ranges are given in both ampl. and time. The digital signal is "sampled" - meaning it stays hi (1) or low (0) for a certain amount of time and the receiver looks at it for a portion of that time and says - "yep its hi" or "this one is low". The timing is part of this process - for example the hi or low pulse width may be 1 ms wide, but the receiver only needs to see it for 1us to determine its state. That's the advantage over analog. And yes, the hi or low ampl. also has a range that the signal can be within, and still be acceptable as such. So, the conclusion is that the digital signal would have to be very corrupted to be misread. Ideally it should be a perfect squarewave, but this is really never the case - not at high frequencies. Signals that pass a clock with them are called "syncronous" transmissions, while signals w/o a clock are asyncronous. The syncronous signals can be transmitted more reliably at very high speeds. Not that asynchronous is less reliable per se, but that syncronous adds some reliability, b/c they are synchronized with the clock for better error checking. As you alluded to, the connectors / connections are more important than the cabling itself. Most bad connections are caused by poor connectors - not bad wire. As long as the cable is sufficiently sheilded (protected or "screened" from outside noise) the music superstore special is most times as good as the custom order, oxygen-free, laser-polished, precision overpriced stuff. I think if the more expensive cables add any value, its that they normally carry a lifetime warranty and may have more durable connectors that stand up better to long-term abuse. As for as the wire itself being superior, that's usually not true. Dave

From: "Alan Goldenberg" <agoldenberg@charter.net> Subject: Off topic networking question and pregnant wife response Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 20:12:48 -0500 If you have access to run wire in your walls, I would strongly recommend running a structured cable product and terminating the runs centrally in the basement. This makes all of your terminations centralized. I ran the Genesis 5061 structured cable throughout my home. Outstanding product. One cable to each location that carries: 2 - category 5e UTP cables 2 - satellite grade coax cables 2 - FDDI fiber cables In the basement I installed a separate network panel for all of the terminations. The panel has a phone distribution block, a built-in modulated 10db coax amplifier for video distribution, and optional fiber distribution panels. Contact me privately off list and I can discuss it with you. Regarding the pregnancy "condition" - your wife should be pleased to hear that prgnancy is actually characterized by the health care environment and the insurance companies as a disease...(and no, I'm not making that up). Best, Alan
From: "vikas bhatia" <vikas10@hotmail.com> Subject: Sony D100 Loading Problems Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 22:51:05 -0500 I've tried a couple of different tapes in my D100, and I'm having the same problem. The display reads "Load" and after making some normal noises, the display reads "Unload". When I hit the "open" switch, the lid opens and about 2-3" of tape is hanging outside the shell. Anyone have similar experiences or know what the cause of the problem might be? Thanks in advance.
