"I don't think so!" ((Fred Willard)) Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 13:30:53 -0700 (PDT) To the person who 'usually' got stereo soundboards--you're lucky. I have not been in many clubs that use a stereo configuration with their systems. Generally the PA is monaural, but the board may use the two main channels out in some sort of two-channel configuration (not to be confused with stereo, which is a R>L spread of channels deliberately panned to certain spots). However, you may get a sort of stereo mix if the club is set up with a couple audience mics that are panned out L/R to provide a stereo audience ambience to mix with the board mono send. Often, when the input to the PA is dual mono, those two channels can be panned out into a stereo "taper mix" without disturbing what makes it to the PA. I guess I was just reacting to the supposition that people are getting 'stereo mixes' when they are just getting two channels of whatever--certainly better than two monaural channels, but not stereo. My sound experience is pretty limited; do you know of a lot of clubs that pan out the PA in stereo? I have heard shows at First Ave. here in Minneapolis that seem to be using a stero spread, but I wonder if that's just me hearing the locations of instruments and amps on the stage itself, which is pretty wide. Any experiences? Jonathan __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 17:36:57 -0400 (EDT) I was hoping someone out there with tech background can help me on this. I = have SP TFB-2 binaural mics (and an SPSB-1S battery box with bass roll-off)= running into a D100, which I just got. Basically I want to know whether it= 's best to use the MIC or LINE inputs on the DAT when taping loud rock show= s 30' away or less from the stacks.=20 Now, the mic sensitivity of the TFB-2 is rated at -35 dB (5.6 mV) re 1V at = 1 Pa. So what would this be in plain old mV/Pa? Somewhere around 30, maybe?= So given this information, would it be safe at all to use MIC (combined wit= h -20dB) for input selection on my D100, or would it be safe to go with LIN= E every time? Thanks in advance.. ANDY ------------------------------ From: "Winnie" Subject: oh sh#t..phantom power fed to battery box Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 17:43:40 -0400 When I use my "stealth" rig it has a battery box feeding the mics. When using these with my mini-me, I run without Phantom power. Well.... hadnt used this setup in several months and I went into "automatic mode" as though I had my usual setup running Oktava mics. I had a number of pops and clicks in the first tune of the show. I figured that was because I was late and was getting my rig set up just as the band came on stage. It was dark and I placed my pack with the mini-me on the floor. The music sounded great in the recording until I placed the pack on the floor. With the pops I figured that I had some cable issue when I moved it to the floor. But then it occured to me that oooppps, I forgot about not using the phantom power with a battery box and it was on the whole set. So.. was it really a loose cable from moving stuff or did I cook something by running phantom power to the battery box and mics. The question is... what should I check. What is most likely to get damaged by running the phantom power. And if you have some ideas.. could you please explain what the issue is with running the phantom power. Too much voltage??? By the way... after the clicks and dropouts, the music went fairly flat. Like it lost a bunch of fidelity, "crispness", maybe high end. It sounds like it also went mono, which is partly why I think a cable got partially pulled out. I'm having a hard time quantifying what is exactly different about the sound. Anyway... my Dead shows start Friday at SPAC and I want to figure out if I've done any damage to the minime, or the battery box, or mics. THANKS!!!! When I see that in lineage's, I always queston it in my mind. When I see that in lineage's, I believe what it really is should be SBD>DAT, or Laptop, or what ever digital device is connected to the SBD. AFAIK, all digital boards are designed for, and used, in recording, not live performances. It makes no sense to me to have all the music sources with the exceptions of synthesizer's and some drum pads, be analog, then convert anywhere from 2 to 64 channels or so to digital for the board, then back to analog for the amplifiers.
