First, no major act on a Stones level would be caught dead mixing FOH on a Mackie, if I take your implied statement accurately. I can come up with lots of accepted reasons, but a few are that they do not sound good, they are fragile, they don't have required features or flexibility and they generally have electronic limits that make them unusable for this level of act. Now, for submixes that don't need handholding, for a keyboardist that has a ton of inputs to deal with, for that performer that likes to mix his or her own IEM mix, great, use a Mackie, they are disposable. Here is a partial interview with their house engineer, Robbie McGrath. http://mixonline.com/ar/audio_hot_licks/index.htm Now as far as a stereo FOH mix, it is done all the time. I toured for fifteen years with everyone from Billy Joel to Cheap Trick to the Osmonds and a stereo mix is a really nice way to fill the house. *But* you can't just start panning things left and right like a recording, you have to know WTF you are doing. Let's just call this my "scalpel theory". Any idiot can buy a sharp knife. Learning to use it takes time. Now your favorite act at the local venue may not use stereo for a number of reasons. Mono is a lot easier to deal with for most and not all grasp the concept of stereo subs if that feature is even available. Thanks! -- Regards, Klay Anderson, D.A.,Q.B.E. From: "david gatewood" <daveg_8@hotmail.com> Subject: digi soundboards Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 21:11:09 +0000 Back in late '98, Showco, one of the largest live sound companies in the world, introduced their Showconsole, a digital soundboard. Instead of inputs/outputs going into the board, it features a separate I/O box with 165 inputs, and not sure how many outputs/aux's. It is ment for festival shows where multiple bands can have all inputs/settings recalled instantly. Just pop in the floppy, and your whole mix is recalled! This board allows 3 or 4 bands to have all inputs set, and allows instantaneous switchover between bands, something that used to be THE MOST frustrating part of live sound. Others have followed suit, as Tom pointed out. Of course, many clubs/bar's will always run that 1978 Yamaha console that sound like ass, but any club worth it's salt is using a much higher grade board. Look around at the next festival you are at. Chances are they are running a Yamaha PM4000, Gamble EX56, or one of nice Midas boards. Also, many racks will include a DIGITAL finalizer, which may be plugged out of. They are especially nice for bluegrass, as it keeps the dynamics in line a little better. I did just that 2 weeks ago, so I know it can be done. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

The question i would purpose would be this. If you were to actually have a true stereo mix and 2 boards running at the same time. Would they cross pan the stereo image. Example. Have one board 1 run vocals and bass out of the right channel and drums and guitar out of the left channel, and then having board 2 run the exact opposite of board 1. Is this even possible?

While it was good to see The Dead, I was most impressed with the wonderful extended set by Steve Winwood. If anyone made a good recording of his performance, I would greatly appreciate a copy of it.
