Even now, there are at least a few better systems available. The DVD spec
allows you to burn up to 24 bit/96khz of just audio (no video) on a DVD, and
at 2 channels, you can get at least a few hours on one disc. If you have a
DVD-R burner for your computer (or a standalone), you can burn a disc that
is playable in everybody's home DVD player (note that there are even a few
commercially-available recordings in this format [John Coltrane's 'Blue
Train' is one that comes to mind]).
Additionally, the DVD-Audio spec allows up to 24 bit/192khz stereo and 24/96
in 5.1 channels, and uses a lossless compression algorithm so you could
potentially put many hours of stereo music on one disc. You could also burn
these discs with a DVD-R burner in your computer (with the right software),
but you would need a DVD-Audio-equipped player to listen to these discs.
There are hundreds of recordings currently commercially available in this
format.
Lastly, you could use your computer as a big random-access jukebox of high
resolution music if you have enough harddrive space to store the high
resolution files, a sound card with a digital output, and an outboard hiqual
D>A converter.

Subject: Cool Edit 2000 Resampling - why so time consuming!!
Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 20:57:41 -0400
I have recently switched over to Cool Edit 2000 from Soundforge. Due to the
fact that I often transfer Dats recorded at 48K to 44.1, I am constantly
resampling via software (my card doesnt do "on the fly"). In Soundforge,
even on the absolute highest accuracy setting, a two hour concert would take
no longer than 20-30 minutes to resample. In Cool Edit, on the middle of
the road setting (2), a 50 minute recording took an hour and a half!!!!
I would like to hear from other Cool Edit users, to find out if perhaps I am
doing something wrong, or if the results in Cool Edit are flawless enough to
warrant the ridiculously long time needed to process the file.

Subject: D8 for sale + Oade cable (passive)
Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 21:49:38 -0400
Howdy folks. I am selling my D8 and Oade cable and figured I would offer it
up to the list before posting on ebay.
The D8 is 4 years old, however has opnly about 40 hours of actual use on the
machine. I bought it from someone else on the list in person (Matt Currie)
about 2 years ago. It was his second deck and only used on sporadic
occasions when 2 different sets of mics were being run, etc. he used if for
about 40 hours in the 2 years he owned it. I have not used it a single time
since I have owned it due to not seeing much live music while saving to buy
a house and then repairing said house... I have the original bill of sale
signed over to me and all of the original packaging that comes with the D8.
I paid $400 for the deck and am looking to get the same back.
Also I have the world famous Oade cable (passive version) with the 7-pin
plug needed to patch out of this deck. I paid $125 for the cable 2 years
ago and have not used it a single time. I am looking to get $100 for the
cable.
I would like to sell both of these items together for $500.
I live in the Burlington, Vt. area and would ideally like to sell the deck
and cable in person. Also will be in the Boston, Mass. area for the fourth
of July weekend and we could arrange to meet somewhere then.
Please email me if you have any questions about the deck or would like my
phone # to call up and ask about it. This is a great deal for someone
looking to get into taping/patching at shows to get a basically brand new
deck and patch cable for a great price!
Thanks for looking,
Eric

Subject: seeking mic/preamp advice for use with D8
Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 06:47:31 -0700 (PDT)
Greetings,
I am researching putting together my first taping
rig. I have zero taping experience. I am seeking
some advice or reccomendations on a good overall mic
and preamp for use with the Sony D8. If anyone has a
suggestion I would love it if you could shoot me an
e-mail offline.
I'll be taping live music in the So Cal area, and
am interested in mics that perform well both indoors
and out. I'm on a budget, so am looking for a set of
mics in the $300-700 range and a pre-amp in the
$100-300.
Any help appreciated! Tom

Mondo Generator - A Gig That DOES Exist and Which is Happening Tonight
======================================================================
Mondo Generator are playing a secret gig tonight at The Monarch in Camden.
Mondo Generator, the side project of Nick Oliveri, bass player in Queens of
the Stone Age, former member of Kyuss and the Dwarves and wild man about
town, will play a secret show tonight at The Monarch, Chalk Farm. The show
will probably consist of Nick on his own with an acoustic guitar, but with
Mr Oliveri you never know quite what to expect. At the end of last year he
played a couple of solo Mondo shows at The Enterprise Bar and at the
Monarch. These shows featured guest appearances from Mark Lanegan and Joey
Castillo.
Mondo Generator started before Nick joined QOTSA. After hooking up with
former Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme to form QOTSA, he put Mondo on ice until
2000, when Southern Lord released their debut album, "Cocaine Rodeo". With
it's sludgy Black Flag-esque riffs it was superb slice of underground rock
and roll. Mondo Generator went back into hibernation until 2002 when Nick
resurrected the band, this time enlisting former Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer
Brandt Bjork, earthlings? and QOTSA guitarist Dave Catching and Molly
Maguire of earthlings? and yellow #5. They recorded the album "A Drug
Problem that Never Existed"* with some guest appearances from the likes of
Josh Homme, Blag Dhalia (The Dwarves), Mark Lanagen, Rex Everything, Troy
Van Leeuwen (QOTSA, A Perfect Circle) and many more. The album is to be
released on the 14th of July on Mike Patton's Ipecac label.
* A title stolen from a song by legendary offensive bastards The Frogs.
Yours sincerely,
Team Southern
