Hey Now,
The initial sampling rate determines how well you are able to replicate the
complex analog waveforms as digital data . . . Higher bit depths and faster
sampling rates mean that you have a more accurate image of the initial
analog waveform. (The more bits involved, the larger the dynamic range
is...
and the faster the sample rate, the the greater the number of discrete steps
that represent the waveform.... "The faster we go the rounder we get..."
;) )
Also, any manipulation of the data at those greater bit depths and sampling
rates (edits, crossfades, EQ processing, basically _any_ plugins applied to
the
data...) will be a more listenable product due to a lack of truncation
errors in
the results.
When done properly, resampling and truncation of higher bit depth/faster
sampling rate recordings take into account the greater initial
depth/sampling
rate and average that into the 16 bit/44.1 kHz data resulting in a product
that
has greater transparency, better dynamic range, and enhanced imaging and
resolution than one done with lower sampling rates.
At the moment you still need some sort of D>A converter to take advantage of
this, but you can store 24/96 audio as data files... _and_ DVD burners are
starting to break the $500 range... ;)
To my ears the difference between 16/44.1 and 16/48 is minimal (though there
is a slight benefit in dynamic range & frequency response to 16/48 that is
audible
on careful A/B listening) but the difference between 16 bit and 24/96
recordings
is nearly as obvious as the difference between analog and DAT. YMMV :)

I have a stupid question for all of you tapers out
there. During a conversation of audio recording with
a friend of mine who is not really up to speed on the
latest technology, he asked me a question that started
making me think. What is the point of having devices
that can record at 24/96 when the spec's for cd are
16/44.1. I mean if all you were going to do is burn
your captured 24/96 audio to cd, you would then have
to resample it to 44.1 and change the bit structure to
a 16 bit file. My answer to him was that with a DVD-R
that you could actually burn the audio file as a24/96
file since dvd allows for 24/96 audio. But most
people I know of still don't have DVD burners, most
people that I know are using CD Rewritable drives. I
am interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Thank
you in advance.

I recently came across an old cassette I had long forgotten about. It's
Michael Hedges in 1984 right before Aerial Boundaries came out. It's a
stellar recording in a very small club. I would like to hook up with
someone with some good quality audio editing software who can transfer it to
CD. Email privately for details. Of course, it will be offered up here
once the transfer is complete.
peace,
Donald

I know it's out there because I've seen it on two lists but no one wants to
give it up. If someone could help me find a copy I'd really appreciate it.
Close to 1,000 shows to offer, see below. Many thanks, Chris

I have a DA-P1 that is not seeing very much use
anymore, so I think it is time to let her go. It has
about 150-250 hours on it. I am the second owner, the
first being Taylor Caine, a member of digi-phish. I
think it had about 100-150 hours when he sent it to
me, and I have put about 100 more on the heads. I
paid 1000 in december 01, and I'm looking to get 800
for it now. It does NOT have the internal battery,
but it DOES have an ecocharge and charger and the AC
power adapter. Let me know if you're interested!
Thanks
Thomas
