I have CDR's burned of it so it would be easy to copy. It came out pretty nice, although there is some wind noise on it (outside and by the bay) -Gregory From: Pete <p.stern@ix.netcom.com> Subject: ISO: Steve Winwood Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 14:03:50 -0700 (PDT) Looking for discs or DATs of the current Winwood tour. YMMV :) > >Stan Smith > As Stan said, YMMV. First I want to say I have a ton of digital equipment, and there is definite advantages to digital, like lack of generational loss and ease of editing compared to analog. I don't have any wat of listening to 24/96 sampled audio, other than to run it back throuogh my A/D/A converter and playing them in straight analog format. Up util a few months ago, I was absolutely convinced that analog audio could never match digital sound quality. I thought the stories coming from the analog purists may have been true for those who would part with 20 grand for an audio sstem, but not for most of us scattered under the rest of the ell curve. I have changed my mind, as a result of finding some pristine copies of my favorite CD's on LP's. IMO, they completely blow away CD's. Aroud 1970 when I was 15 or 16, I bought the least expensive Sony reel to reel deck. I copied everyones records I could get my hands on to tape. My brother, a year older than me was really pissed because his records sounded better on tape, than the record did. I am doing what I can to transfer a bunch of my music, especially the non-comercial releases to reel. I am recording as much as I can from my HD's to my D>A converter to a Teac X-1000R. Audio tape is expensive, though. A 10.5" reel of Quantegy 456 is about $20. A fair number of studio's are still recording masters on the same tape, except they are using 2" tape, which is closer to $100 a reel. At 30 IPS that lasts about 20 minutes, at 3 3/4 ips it records about 4 hours. IMO, 3 3/4 IPS if fine for recording for home listening. IMO, the soound quality of CD audio, still can't touch good analog records or tapes. Even tapes recorded from CD's, sound better than the CD's. I have 2-3 head cassette decks that, IMO, CD's recorded to on Maxell XL II cassettes, soud better than the CD's. I still have a lot of Digital music, a computer set up to transfer anything to any word/sample rate, and I use it often. The kicker on this is I found this out on a stereo that has a Sony reciever, that is a STR-D715, about 9 years old, a Technics SL-D202 turntable with a Grado GF3 cartrige, but on the end were some big Klipsch's, about 17 years old. I have a couple of grand in the system, nothing outrageous. I do agree with Stan's statement about using biger words and faster samples, to approach the sound of analog. I don't know where the point will be is met that is. I know my DVD is 24/192 capable. I think to really get it right, there will have to be external converters/DTS decoders, etc. Keith ==============070201050204020006060305==

Closer to real time analog data. The faster sampling rate allows this to happen. With a faster sample rate, more bits can be collected that more closely resemble the actual analog waveform. Dave ============================== From: "Stanley W. Smith" <swsmith@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Re: Really dumb question Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 14:37:26 -0500 Hey Now, The initial sampling rate determines how well you are able to replicate the complex analog waveforms as digital data . . . Higher bit depths and faster sampling rates mean that you have a more accurate image of the initial analog waveform. (The more bits involved, the larger the dynamic range is... and the faster the sample rate, the the greater the number of discrete steps that represent the waveform.... "The faster we go the rounder we get..." ;) ) ===============================

From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: Stealth Mics for Loan near Atlanta? Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 20:53:52 -0400 I hate to be a mooch, but does anyone in the Atlanta area (or within 100 miles) have a pair of DPA's or any kind of easy to use stealth mics I could borrow for a show on Monday 6/30? I'd be willing to pay you/hook you up with a copy of the show I'm taping or other shows, etc. I have permission to film a great emo band called the Casket Lottery and I don't want to just use my camera mic. The place they are playing is very small and using my rig would be a huge hassle. Please let me know if you can help. I don't mind driving to pick them up and give them back to you. Thanks, Wes Kindtaper@aol.com
From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: Really dumb question Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 22:34:16 -0400 (EDT) > I copied everyones records I could get my hands on to tape. My > brother, a year older than me was really pissed because his records > sounded better on tape, than the record did. You copied a record to tape and the tape sounded "better" than the source record? That's called "euphonic distortion". > Even tapes recorded from CD's, sound better than the CD's. There was once a test done. They recorded a blank record, and played back (A) a CD, (B) the same CD mixed with the "silence" (actually noise, of course, but at a low level) from the record. People who claimed that records sounded better than CDs tended to prefer (B). There are good reasons for this; low-level white noise (tape hiss is close enough) masks some of the signal-correlated distortion present in (some) CDs. Signal-correlated distortion sounds much nastier than slightly higher amounts of uncorrelated distortion. Seth
From: "Mason Cool" <masoncool@hotmail.com> Subject: Sony PCM-M1 Question Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 23:30:33 -0400 Hello, Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out how many hours of use a Sony PCM-M1 has had? I've heard some Sony decks will tell you how many hours of use they've had if you key in a special code or something? Is this true? And is it true for the M1? If anyone knows how to check the hours of usage please email me. Or email me if you know that this option is only for other decks and not the M1. Since I was not in the lawn based "taper" section, had to record in stealth mode (a friend, recording FOB, was busted and made to leave the show). Some kiddy walking through the aisle, clipped my bag during Tomorrow Never Knows, which flipped my mic/line switch and I lost 3/4 of the song (about 6 min). I'm looking for a HQ - Schoeps or comprable sourced recording of this one song that I can blend into my own, so that I can thereafter release and distrubute this gem of a recording (I won't release an otherwise incomplete recording.)
