I stand corrected... :) (haven't been to the computer superstore
recently...)
Guess I'm going to have to start yet _another_ in the endless series of
format transfers... <sigh> (Still haven't finished with all of the analog
cassettes > CD-R transfers... "So many shows, so little time..." ;) )
On the up-side, we should be able to archive entire tour legs on one disc
so there at least be more room in the 'library'... ;)

Stan, i'm not trying to disagree with you just for the
sake of disagreeing. however, dvd burners have broken
the $200 range... in fact, you can get a brand new 4x
dvd burner for right at $150 from online stores (such
as avlogic.com). :)
and no, i don't work for nor am i affiliated with
avlogic.com in any way. i've just shopped there a
couple of times.
so, having said that, maybe it's time to get a dvd
burner and start burning those dvd-audio discs.

Hi,
I'm looking into buying a DSM powering adapter module
(w/bass rolloff) for use with a set of Sonic Studios
DSM-6S/L mics... looking specifically for either the
PA-6LC, PA-6LC2, or PA-6LC3B. Does anyone here have
one (in used but good working condition) they'd like
to sell off? If so, please e-mail me privately.
Thanks,

The batteries that come with the M-1 are nMh - nickel metal hydride
rechargeables. To the best of my knowledge this is the best
rechargeable battery type available for AA'a and for this type of use.
A buddy of mine advised that he has seen the mA (milli amp) rating of
such batteroies go up several notches in the past six months (he
watches such things). Check out any big box electronics store and
compare the mA rating on their batteries to the ones that came with the
M-1. You might pick up an extra 30 mionutes of record time with the
newer ones. I like to carry a set of Photo-Lithium AA's as a backup
in case my rechargeables run out. I've gotten close to five hours from
the Photo Lithiums but they're pricey and non-rechargeable.
Better yet is a battery sled - radio shack battery holder for six D
cells and a plug to fit the M-1. It's still small enough to fit in a
small bag (tough to stealth though) and it will let you run for a whole
day at a festival.

For those of you running White Stripes Tour history sites, the following
sources were taped last night:
1) Dynamic Audio Binaruals > DA-120F @ 60hz Roll Off > Sharp MT877 [taper:
b. branch (myself)]
2) CSB > Sharp MD702 [taper: Neil Lang]
My source is currently not for trade. This is strictly for information

6 Months ago, I was not an analog fan. I had Heard the audiophile
claims of analog records sounding better than digital, and I
dismissed it as some fanatical reactioary idea, that maybe if you got
into5 figures spent on audio equipent, it migh be true, but definitely
not for the masses. I had bought a Turntable in case I stumbled onto
some LP's I wanted to digitize. I was truly shocked when I played the
record and it sounded better than the same cd. This is not a long
standing point of view of mne. It is something that shocked th hell out
of me recently. I had no records for 20 years, and did not expect them
to sound as good as they did.

I can't vouch for Wes, but The Casket Lottery is a great band and well
worth taping. I caught them at a show in their hometown of Lawrence, KS
back in December. I might even have a tape ;-)

I hate to be a mooch, but does anyone in the Atlanta area (or within 100
miles) have a pair of DPA's or any kind of easy to use stealth mics I could
borrow for a show on Monday 6/30?
I'd be willing to pay you/hook you up with a copy of the show I'm taping or
other shows, etc. I have permission to film a great emo band called the
Casket Lottery and I don't want to just use my camera mic. The place they
are playing is very small and using my rig would be a huge hassle. Please
let me know if you can help. I don't mind driving to pick them up and give
them back to you.
Thanks,
Wes

has AA NiMH 2100 mAh batteries for $2 each (plus shipping). I don't
know the capacity of the ones Sony sends, but since those are quite a
few years old, I'm reasonably certain they don't exceed 1700 mAh, and
may be quite a bit less.

You're right, Keith. You can't ever get digital to the point where it is an
_exact_ replica of the original analog, because that would require infinite
resolution.
To add to your other statement about degradation - CD's have a limited life
as well, just like any other material goods.
Especially CDRs, last I checked they had a life of about 10-15 years. Not
including wear and tear - i.e. scratches, etc.
Just one more comment about the records vs. tapes vs. CDs, etc - I view it
like a comparison to transistor amps vs. tube amps. They still keep tubes
around because transistor amps just don't have that same sound. Which is
due to harmonics created naturally by the tubes that transistors don't
create the same type and amount (i.e. odd, even - 3rd, 4th, etc).
Theoretically, you could create those harmonics with extra transistor amp
stages, but it has not been done successfully, or would cost too much to be
practical.
So, Seth is also right about the extra "euphonic distortion" that is
present, but on the other hand, we live in an analog world. Most
instruments are analog, except for drum machines, keyboards and the like.
So, that rain pounding on your window pane may sound good, and I agree. But
it may be the combination af hearing it echo against the glass of the
window, and the way it sounds through the window, etc. If you recorded it
digitally, technically it would not be the same as you hearing it "live"
through your own sound system (ears). While digital can be a good thing, it
is still not perfect, neither are records and tapes (especially 8-tracks :).

You could grab a sample of 'vinyl silence' as a noise print in either S.F.
or in Waves, save as a wave file, then mix it into all your direct to
digital
sound files... =) Might have to set a roll-off on a low-pass filter to
remove
16kHz and above and add some extra rumble and ticks as well... =P

And this of course, is a classic example of dither. maybe someone needs to
come up with an 'LP' dither algorithm for the vinyl enthusiasts. You could
probably save yourself a lot of time, keith, if you find a suitable digital
effect that sounds like tape. then you could ge thte sound you like in real
time, without actually transferring it to analog.
